10 reasons why Jarmo Kekalainen should be hired as GM of the Ottawa Senators
Jarmo might be the best scouting director around. He's uber-elite in that job.
As a GM? Ehhhhhhh...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JacketsComrade</b></div><div>the jarmo kekalainen - ville siren combo is hard to beat. if there were banners to raise for mid-late round value they'd be raising them. edit to add: if you have a russian you need to get over to north america, jarmo has a very good track record at getting prospects out of russia.</div></div>
He drafted a huge chunk of the heart of the Blues Cup team, despite having left the organization nearly a decade earlier. Perron, Petro, Tarasenko and Schwartz were all his picks. And he kinda set the standard and the structure and the methods of the Blues scouting department that has continued to largely kill it at the draft since he left. And before Jarmo, the Blues were one of the worst drafting teams in the league. A tire fire in a dumpster floating down a flooded street.

Seeing Vladar wearing the all black Kings uniform would be cool.
They could play Star Wars music with James Earl Jones' voice as Darth Vader.😁
Vladar could use a Red lightsaber as a goal stick. 😉

I won't say that Reichel is off the table completely, but they are not looking to move him. I doubt a late 1st is even considered. I'm almost positive they believe in him and have all the time in the world to give him. If someone offered a 1st in the teens, they might think about it, but I think they'd still ultimately opt to keep him around and see his development through. He is having a bad season but there is no reason to panic yet. This is his first real season in the NHL, he is 21, and, between last year, a few games this year, and his time in the AHL, he has shown real tangible flashes of absolute brilliance that cannot be ignored.

He's a rookie that played a few games last year and looked good. He also looked great in the AHL. This is a big adjustment year for him, he needs time. Hawks aren't going to trade him, at least not for just a late 1st round pick.

Thread:

I'm not going to puff smoke and lie here. It's not been a good season for him or the Hawks. From what I can see thus far he's really making a lot of poor IQ decisions. Isn't protecting the puck well enough. Making weak drop back passes that he simply assumes the Hawks player behind him will get...which maybe that worked in the AHL, but in the NHL players battle for everything. He's not driving to the net. He's really just staying of the perfifferie vs forcing between the dots...sure Bedard might get his jaw broken, but that's where you HAVE to play if you want to be an NHLer. He's not out there trying to make aggressive plays. He's out there waiting for others around him to make plays. It's been rough.
ALL THAT SAID. Hawks need to ride their draft picks. Ride them EITHER to success or failure. If you start trading away prospects that are intended for your future...like Reichel is...then you're giving away any potential upside. And you're taking back someone else's change of scenery player. The Hawks are in the position that they need these guys to get ice time. Give him a few more years before giving up in him. Certainly don't give up on him as a rookie on a team with a constant rotation of AHLers pretending to be NHLers.

Plus/minus is no more a definitive statistic than points, and by definition, a second-line player isn't an average player . . . or do you think that the second-line guys on YOUR favorite team are "average players"?

Buddy has already concluded that Trevor Zegras is a "career second liner at best."

Reinforcing your (and my) point: Discounting his ELC-busting first exposure, let's look at Cole Caufield's last 2-and-a-half seasons: 162 games, 115 points, -40.
I don't think he deserves any more, or less, scorn than Trevor Zegras, and neither one is an "average player."
Nick Suzuki's third and fourth seasons coincided with Trevor's (2021-2022 and 2022-2023); 164 games, 61 and 66 points, -42, long-term contract at $7,875,000. Just an "average player"?

But yeah, VAN would need to pay, or it'll be a very late pick coming back to them. I like Kuzmenko and think he needs a change of scenery, but 5.5 is tough to swallow for another year for any team. I can absolutely see CHI winning this scenario anyway you look at it. Kuzmenko returns to form next year? Recoup the assets you lost at the TDL... Kuzmenko doesn't pan out? Oh well, you got some assets to take on his contract.</div></div>
I'm only going off his 15 games in the NHL but he looked ok. He might become a bottom pair dman in the NHL which would be a huge win for a 7th round pick. Hawks just don't have any RD prospects so I can't see them trading one away without getting one in return. I wouldn't give up the 3rd alone for kuzmenko. You don't bail teams out of bad contracts just because you have cap space. Keep those prices high.

If the Hawks are even willing to pay what's likely an early 3rd for Kuzmenko, there's no way they include Crevier too. Crevier is looking like a steal as a 7th rounder, and Hawks aren't trading away one of the two RD prospects they have.
