Hawks needs a LD
Hawks DON'T need a left defenseman. It is probably their deepest position in their pipeline. And Nick Robertson has nearly zero value in a trade due to him being undersized and hurt EVERY year. The Hawks, also, aren't trading high picks for Nylander, who would be in his 30s by the time the Hawks are contending.

Try it out
Hawks don't take on Matt Murray without a first attached to him. Maybe Murray and Knies for future considerations would get it done from Chicago's perspective. Doubt Toronto does that deal. They likely missed the boat on using Chicago to take on Murray's contract. Hawks have reached the cap floor, and their asking price to take on bad deals has skyrocketed since then. Toronto's likely only option is to buy him out when their next buyout window opens after Samsonov's arbitration hearing.

Reichel is nearly the most untouchable player in the Hawks system at this point. It would take someone on par with Jake Sanderson to get that deal done. Not happening.

Hawks not giving up any asset of true value to help the Canucks with their salary cap. If they want to move Garland, I could see the Canucks adding a second or third round pick for something low in value, like Colin Blackwell.

Would still love to acquire Dickinson
There isn't a deal with the Hawks where they take on a left defenseman, let alone one they were very happy to get rid of just last year. They might be willing to take Olofsson, with a sweetener, or Peterka, with a sweetener going back to Buffalo.

The best option is to buyout OEL, but I will be SHOCKED if their owner did that. I don't even see any team trading for Myers unless the Canucks eat up to half of that salary, then what's the point? That leaves Boeser or Garland, and Boeser frees up the most without taking money back and brings back the most in return. Would you rather flip picks and just give up Garland? That's fine with me, but again, doesn't give the Canucks as much in return. Again, there are a very limited number of teams willing or able to take on a contract that helps the Canucks get cap space.

We'll see for sure, but the list of UFAs this summer is VERY weak. I could easily see teams overpay, and I outlined why the Hawks would do it.

That's fine, if that's your opinion, but how do the Canucks get under the Cap, do you think? They are currently already over the cap and all the other teams see that, and there is a very short list of teams that can take on any player off the Canucks roster with any sort of salary. Could they send Garland instead? Sure, but IMO, the Canucks likely don't get back as much in return and isn't freeing up as much cap space. Plus, Tocchet wouldn't be happy losing Garland.

As for your theory on overpaying, that's not entirely accurate. Ryan Strome was projected to get 7M last year and ended up getting 5x5 with Anaheim.</div></div>
I think if Strome signed for 3 years instead of 5, his cap number would have been closer to that 7M that was speculated. If the Hawks attack the UFA market, they are going to overpay to keep the term lower AND help hit the cap floor. Maybe they don't bring any quality UFAs in this year, and save the money for an outstanding crop of UFAs in 2024.

Canucks desperately need to get cap space and I think Tocchet won't want to lose Garland, and Myers is a tougher sell until the deadline IMO. OEL is a non-starter for any team in the league; they're stuck with him unless they do a buyout, which their owner will not do. In this proposed deal, Canucks only drop 8 spots, yet pick up a 2nd round pick, which they currently don't have in a great draft, and pick up $6.65M in space. They also get a RD prospect, which they need, who doesn't fit any longer in Chicago. Hawks can stay put at 19 and get their guy anyway, but would take on Boeser's overpay to help make the cap floor and make sure they get who they like at 11.

They're likely going to overpay, whether it's a Compher or a Domi in order to keep the term lower, and to also make sure they hit the cap floor. It also entices these players to leave teams that are Cup contenders.
