Sorry everyone, I was wrong! Edm will have enough cap space to resign RNH and keep Leon. As a Habs fan, I didn't look closely enough at the guys Oilers needed/should resign next year. My bad! And if they can convince Seattle to take Neal, they'll have even more room.

whos Seattle taking
A lot of valid points by everyone here about who MTL should protect. However, one thing has not been stated at all yet and it's the following: if MTL makes an arrangement with Seattle, say draft Kulak for example, we send you a couple of picks/prospects, it won't matter who's not protected. I know some teams got burnt last time with Vegas doing side deals but don't think for a minute that good teams won't try to do the same thing this year. The only reason those side deals made some teams regret it is simple, all those players ending up having career years all at the same time. The chances that something like that happens again (and Seattle making the finals in year 1) are slim-to-none.

If Danault goes who are some 3Cs youd want fellow MTL Fans
Alexander Wennberg on a 3 year deal at $3M per season. That would restore depth at NHL level for centers without having to put too much pressure on Evans and/or Poehling. Wennberg is responsible defensively and can provide a little offence as well. Although Evans as been very good so far this year, not sure he will be able to produce 35 + pts a year at the NHL level - which is what MTL would want from it's 3C. And I'm still not sure about Poehling and where he fits in. I don't see him being more than a good 4C at the NHL level, with 3C being a little out of reach imo. But time will tell I guess.

Who will Seattle take
If I'm Seattle, I take McDonough if left unprotected by Tampa.
Even with Kucherov out all regular season, still think Johnson will get traded by the time season starts. And next summer, it will be Killorn's time to get traded. If Tampa can have all three of those things happen in the next 6-8 months, they will be set for extending Point, Sergachev, Cirelli to market value long term deals with enough room to complement those players.

2021-22 Habs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shanesaw9</b></div><div>You called Chiarot a 3rd pairing defenseman, and Edmunson is basically Chiarot but with more term.
Then you traded Chiarot anyways after giving away Hillis a 2nd, a 4th and 5th round pick so Seattle will take Byron instead of Chiarot or Edmundson or Allen.
Meanwhile Byron is good for 20 goals when healthy, is strong defensively and on the PK, and although he had a bad round vs philly he was MTL's leading scorer after the Pittsburgh series. He also wears the A.
Did you pay any attention to what happened when Vegas made side deals with teams last expansion draft? They owned everyone in the league. Just lose whoever they are going to take, it not like MTL is risking giving up anyone special. Don't overthink this.
And maybe Bergevin proactively signed Edmundson knowing that he could lose one of his defenseman in the expansion draft?
EDIT:
Let's put it this way, would you trade Byron, Hillis, a 2nd, a 4th and a 5th straight up for Edmundson or Chiarot or Allen? I wouldn't.</div></div>
Some valid points by you for sure. However, here is my rebuttal.
First, I said Chariot was on third pair, never actually called him a third pair defenseman. Edmundson is by far a more mobile and better skating dman than Chariot, reason Edmundson is paired with Weber. Reason I put Chariot on third pair in my lineup is because didn't want Romanov and Juulsen/Fleury has a third pair. That would expose MTL having a rookie and a unexperienced pro as a unit.
My thinking in trading Chariot is I could get a decent return for him as opposed to losing him in the expansion draft. In a perfect world, I wouldn't trade Chariot at all to be honest. But unfortunately, Habs will need to replace the production of Tatar next year and I think Saad could be a nice addition to the club. Also has some familiarity with Bergevin from his Chicago days. That's where trading Chariot makes sense.
You are right about Byron (and I really do like him) but there is caveat to your statement. Yes, when healthy he can produce around 20 goals or so but in reality, those 20 goals can only come if he's playing with legit playmakers. Byron is not talented enough to create the offence for his line, he can only finish what others create. And for the last few years, it seems that every training camp that he doesn't have a spot locked up in the top 9. Playing him on the fourth line will not get you 20 goals out of him. Saad would be a tremendous upgrade on the third line over Byron. And as for the PK, we have Danault, Lehky, Armia, Evans that can do that. Also think Anderson will be able to help as well. The "A" goes to one of Danault or Petry, easy fix!!!
As for giving up Hillis and picks, that to me is simple. With the current depth at center (Danault, Suzuki, KK, Poehling, Evans), I don't see how Hillis stands a chance in hell to make the roster in the next 5 yrs. Don't see that as a big loss tbh. MTL has 3 fourth and fifth round picks in 2021, we don't need that many. The real asset in this scenario is the 2nd round pick. Seattle could get a good prospect out of that. And let's be honest here, after the third round, most teams rarely find a NHL calibre player. Of course, there are always exceptions but for the most part, picks after the third round are bonus for teams if those guys make it into the NHL. 2021 would marks the 3 or 4 year in a row that MTL would have at least 10 picks. At some point, it's ok to give some of those up.
As for the signing of Edmundson, you may be right. But, I think he was signed because he didn't like that the thirds pair in the playoffs was Ouellet and Mete. Edmundson brings size and mobility and Stanley Cup ring. He can also play heavy minutes as well. Again, as I stated in my description, Romanov is the key in all this. If he shows that his ready for the NHL, then MB has a decision to make on how he sees his defence shaping up beyond 2021. Romanov is a physical dman for a small guy. If he can manage is own end and provide a great first pass out of his zone, will be more than fine with him moving forward. That's where Chariot could be moved.
I agree that during the Vegas expansion draft, several teams made foolish trades to save some players and/or lose certain players. The fact that all those drafted players for Vegas had career years all at the same time was nothing short of a miracle. Highly unlikely that that scenario repeats itself for Seattle. With that said, I think for MTL that losing one of Edmundson, Chariot or Allen would be a far greater loss than making a deal to lose Byron. The fact is MB has worked really hard in the last few years (and this off season especially) to get bigger at all positions and improving the back up goalie. Anything that can be done to not lose that progress should be done imo!
With the current roster like Weber/Petry/Price/Gally, Habs window for a Cup is the next 3 years (20-21, 21-22 & 22-23). After that, MTL will still be competitive but will not be a Stanley Cup contender at all. Weber, Petry and Price will all be on the decline by then and I'm not sure that the kids we have now will be at the level needed to compete for a Cup. We'll be good, don't get me wrong but not a top 8 team in the league.
And to answer your question, yes I would trade Byron, Hillis and those picks for any of the Edmundson, Chariot or Allen straight up at this point in time. Because those three players bring something to the Habs that they need. Size and mobility on D and a legitimate back up is something MTL hasn't had in years, so absolutely I give that up!

Sorry, I should of specified that Chariot would be moved prior to the expansion draft. But even if he isn't, I indicated that MB would try to make a deal with Seattle to have them take Byron. If the deal is in place prior to draft, it wouldn't matter that Chariot was left unprotected.

MTL gets:
Huberdeau
FLA gets:
Domi
Jordan Harris
Kulak
Tatar
2020 1st rd pick
2020 2nd rd pick (from STL)
I was crucified on this site because that wasn't nearly enough in the mind of some people on this site. One guy even suggested that it would take Suzuki, Caufield, Romanov and the first round pick for FLA to even consider it. That's what I find so funny on this site, how so many people have no idea about value of players. We're all fans of course, and we'll often make trades that would benefit our favorite team more than the other but some people are absolutely nuts about asking prices for players. Mark Stone, who's as good as Huberdeau, was traded for a high end prospect, a 2nd round pick and a minor league player who no longer plays in North America. OTT would've love to get this kind of return when they traded Stone.

Just as an FYI in case not everyone is aware but Carey makes his offseason home in Pasco, WA which is about 150 miles from Seattle. It's where he played is junior hockey for the Tri-City Americans. I also believe his wife is from there (but not sure). Anyway, I'm Carey Price fan for sure but I do see him finishing his career in Seattle. MTL's window to win a cup with Price and Weber is in the next three hockey seasons, so by 2022-23. Nobody knows for sure how Carey will age but what he proved during the playoffs this summer is that if he is rested, he can still provide quality goaltending. He would certainly bring leadership to that locker room. And as for the money, I don't think Jerry Bruckheimer and company will be that concerned! The cap is likely to be near $88M by 2023-24.

Moving forward after Allen extension
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheGHANDI90</b></div><div>Yeahhh, this is actually one of the more frightening posts i've seen... So a 25yr old Drouin has no trade value atm so instead of putting him in a position to succeed and maximize his abilities and possible return in an eventual trade, let's pair him with another young and promising player and lose them both for the fear of having one of either Chiarot or Edmundson taken by Seattle ? Ooof i just don't know. He also plays LW which is a position of need for us rn and imo Tatar is much more expendable. He's nearly 5 years older and coming off of back to back career years so will fetch an ok return in a trade. Anywho this is all speculation from both our ends but I just hope over the next few years Bergevin looks at this team more from a business perspective, as it might be time to move on from Gally if he wants more than 6mil per for any longer than 5 years.</div></div>
I would disagree that with your comment about putting Drouin in a position to succeed and maximizes his abilities. In his first year in MTL, did he not play in the top 6? Did he not have time on the first PP unit? He also finished that season with the second worst +/- on the team (only behind Galchenyuk). Two players that have no idea what their own end looks like and what they need to do when they're there. In his second year, he played most of the season with Domi (who had a career year with 72 pts), Drouin only managed 53 pts. He also had time on the PP as well, and at the point no less! Oh, but I know why he didn't get close to Domi's point total, ah I remember, yeah.. something about a 22ish games goalless drought where he only had 7 pts (four of which came in a blowout win against Detroit). He's a streaky player and will continue to be that way because there is no effort in his game. I would rather have Tatar who actually works on the ice then a forward that has talent who refuses to put the effort in, just because he's 5 yrs younger.
As for Mete, explain to me why Bergevin would only offer him a one year contract at a minuscule $735K cap hit? Would it be that he thinks Romanov will surpass him by the end of this upcoming season? One thing MTL has not had in a very long time on the left side D is size. Both Chiarot and Edmundson provide that along with good skating ability and excellent zone exits. Not staying that they're speedsters like Mete but they can certainly get around the ice. And frankly, I'd rather have Kulak has my third pairing D then Mete tbh! Romanov will be a top 4 defenseman, Mete will not. Not saying that Mete won't have a long career but if I'm going to have a small d-man in my lineup, it's Romanov for me, not Mete.

I get that Laffy will be good but do you really think NYR will keep him on the 3rd line for the next 3-4 years? I wouldn't think so. They won't trade Panarin and Kreider's new deal has a NMC for the next four years. I'm sure Gorton will look at every option to make sure his team is set for the next 5-6 years and that could mean trading the 1st overall pick to get the 2C they need.

It's not that I don't like him but I don't love him. And sometimes, you have to give up a good player to improve your team. I'd rather have Sergachev. As for Spurgeon, no I don't like him. Not sure I agree with your statement either. Spurgeon, after 3 seasons, had 162 games played, 40 pts and -4 rating. Mete is 171 games, 31 pts and +27. I'd hardly say he's way ahead of Spurgeon at that age. And Mete's plus/minus is a little skewed since the majority of his playing time was with Weber, which helps a lot. I'm just not a fan of his small size which will eventually be a problem in his own end. He's a third pairing the defenseman at best in the NHL. The only reason he made the Habs three years ago was because MB couldn't do his job and get a proper LHD. And I personally think that Romanov will be better than him.

Only added Kovy because of the fact that he said he really loved it on MTL. He's also said that money is important. I would personally not resign him if I'm MB, just cause I don't think he could sustain the enthusiasm he showed this year for all 82 games next year. As for DeMelo, he would certainly add great depth to our right side, he's by no means a top 4 d-man on most teams. Sure, someone else might overpay to get him but coming off a $900K/year contract, there no way he gets more than $3M per year. The reason for Domi at one year is quite simple. He's an RFA, so MTL has control. His attitude was **** this year when Julien tried him on the wing to give time at C to Suzuki. If Domi stays in MTL long term, it will be at LW and not C. If I'm the Habs, I'm not giving Domi a long term deal until he can show that he's a true team player and provides an honest effort for 82 games. At the most, I could've given him two years but not more than that. If things pan out like MTL wants them to, our centers will be as follows in 2-3 years time; 1C - Suzuki, 2C - Kotkaniemi, 3C - Danault.
