<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Victor24</b></div><div>Right. So if that is your argument (it is fair) but don't bring up stats of guys like Nylander and Kucherov, saying they produce on the PP at a high rate so they are the same.
Now, if you want to talk about linemates, we can but you have to acknowledge that to a buying team, that is a gamble. Maybe he would do better with better linemates. Maybe not. The Pens took that gamble with Granlund, it did not work out.
But, in that argument, you point has merit. Just avoid the "player X has A% on the PP too, are they also a PP specialist" argument. It isn't a good one.</div></div>
Reread my comment, I said they were obviously more skilled than Monahan, the point remains that there are only a very few players who produce at a significantly higher % of their points at 5 on 5 vs the PP. So to say that one who produces the same % of his points on the PP (Monahan) is just a PP specialist and others aren't is a ridiculous argument. If player A scores 42% of his points on the PP and is considered a PP specialist cause he only has 30 points but Player B who produces 45% oh his points on the PP but has 60 points is a complete player, without taking into account quality of linemates at 5 on5 is a ridiculous argument. They literally produce at almost the same rate, the skill levels might be different but the rates are the same. I have said this a hundred times over the last few days, if you give Monahan 2 top 6 players like Malkin and Rust and his overall and 5 on 5 production will skyrocket.

Move to the wing
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsFan33</b></div><div>I'm not very good at math but looking at the official stats on NHL.com, Monahan has 4 goals/16 assists and Savard has 4 goals/11 assists for a combined 8 goals and 27 pts 5v5. That's a little more than 19 pts combined.
I get that you don't like Montreal and/or Monahan or Savard but when using stats has the only deciding factor about the value of a player, you could at the very least use the correct stats.</div></div>
The game against the Bruins wasn't pretty, but Monahan's 3 points was one of the only positives.
I am not making the argument that Monahan is "as good" as Lindholm, but I find it funny how people on this site say Monahan is crap (while trying to trade for him) and Lindholm is easily worth the usual Center packages we see at the TDL.
Monahan has more goals and points per game than Lindholm at this point... He can be had for a fraction of the cost. I just don't get the hate.

Because Caufield should be on a second line with big bodies in a contending team.
Sheltering a 5'8" scorer with a weak defensive game makes a lot of sense.

if you think Weber is an example of Petry's future than the rest of your statement in moot. They play a very different style of game Weber always relied on his physicality in the defensive zone and his offensive production came mainly from his point shot. Petry is a much better skater, has the ability to skate the puck up the ice both things that werent strengths of Weber. Mobile defensemen age better than physical dman. If you've watched petry play this season its very clear that the decrease in production and effective play seem to be a case of motivation and not a decline in his skating. He has no drive and he routinely makes mistakes due to a lack of attention to detail, i do think you will see a much different petry once he is traded whether that is too dallas or a different US market.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>well, cap hit is a massive massive thing with the cap. And when the goalie is old and hasnt been very good most of the past 3 years, and hasnt played all season and his cap hit is crazy huge and goes on for 4.75 more seasons .
And no, we certainly do not agree that price is the best goalie in the world. Just because he had a really good playoffs doesnt excuse that he has been pedestrian at best in the past 3 regular seasons. the best goalie in the league won the cup last year, and the year before, and the 2nd best is in winnipeg and price isnt even 3rd after them.
Price at 50% gets you nothing from a team like Colorado, and it especially does not get you girard. If Montreal wants Girard they are gonna have to start with Suzuki or Caufield+++.
Price is a cap dump unless you can find a really dumb GM like Ken Holland to pilfer.</div></div>
Girard is a second-pairing defender: to insinuate that he's worth Caufield, Suzuki, or a combination of those two and any other surplus is simply ridiculous and I don't even have a horse in that race. You aren't operating in reality if you only want to approach this conversation exclusively from the point of your anti-Price bias.
In a Space Jam-esque scenario where ailens want to play hockey for the fate of the Earth, Price would be the man they put in net. Vasilevskiy would be the backup. Hellebuyck might get an invite to be the third string, and that would be depend entirely on how hot names like Gibson and Lehner were at the time. This is merely objective fact. A sweeping majority of NHL players, executives, and even fans, recognize that Price is the standard.
Getting that calibre of goaltender at essentially market UFA rate for starting goaltenders that aren't anywhere near as good as the names thrown around in this discussion holds extravagant value. I really don't know what to tell you here. Francouz and Girard for a half-retained Price is a pretty fair deal all things considered and it immediately vaults the Avalanche into their own contending status ahead of all other clubs.

After season before expansion draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsFan33</b></div><div>I don't normally reply to comments on my posts for a variety of reasons. First, most of the time users of this website do not read thoroughly any description provided in the Team explanation dialogue box or the descriptions within the trade boxes. Secondly, it is of my opinion that about only 10% of users here are knowledgeable about hockey and have the basic understanding of the workings of the NHL as it relates to trades and/or signings.
Now, to respond to both of yours comments. First, I clearly stated that Arizona doesn't have to trade Chychrun. The point of this post is to gauge the value needed from Montreal to get such a player from Arizona. I feel like I overpaid in terms of prospects/picks in this scenario. To get a player like Chychrun, MTL would have to overpay.
Although the sample size is small, Romanov is clearly not ready for top 4 duties yet. There was a point in the first period on Saturday night where Romanov had no idea where to position himself in his own d-zone. He's got tremendous upside but should not be rushed at all. Getting a player like Chychrun would allow us to keep Romanov on third pair. We would just need to find a veteran RD to play with him so that he can progress on his natural side. Another unfortunate habit he's developing in the last 10-12 games is skating around the ice looking for the big hit!!! He's even crossed over to his partner's side in the neutral zone attempting one of these hits. I think patience is needed with Romanov before he becomes the next Mete. I bring up Victor Mete because that's exactly what MTL did to him. Because of the poor job by MB in the summer of 2017, MTL had no LHD capable of top 4 minutes. Then comes this young, small D that can skate and everybody wet their pants because "finally" MTL has a partner for Weber. Mete couldn't handle the load and because Habs were desperate, failed to notice the flaws in his game. He has no shot, cannot defend his zone physically and provides no offence. The only thing he's really good at is skating, which should allow him to be a 6-7th defenseman in the NHL for the next 4-5 yrs at the most. Watch any game he's played in this year and you'll see a kid trying to do too much just to show that he thinks he belongs. If he kept it simple and was more efficient with the puck, it might be easier for Ducharme and staff to keep him in the lineup. But right now, every game he plays makes hard to justify keeping him in there. With the Chiarot injury, I'd rather have Ouellet play or even give another shot to Fleury on the right side!
Now, as for Caufield, I don't understand why so many on here think he's going to be great at the NHL level? While looking at a player's performance in the World Juniors is not an indication of future success, it should still be used to provide insight on one's potential for success at the next level. And, while I feel that US college hockey is certainly more competitive than 10 yrs ago, I wouldn't call it an elite league. Especially, if you compare it to Major Junior. Success in college rarely (I know there are exceptions) translates to the NHL. In two WJC, Caufield only managed 7 pts in 12 games and was a -3 while playing in the top 6. The other 5 players in the top 6 played in both tournament and produced double digit points. And, as for his performances in Wisconsin, I would venture a guess and say that the level of competition is nowhere near what it is at the WJC. At 5'7 and 160 lbs, he is not the type of player needed in MTL. We've had small forwards for the longest time. Don't see why Habs bend over backwards to make room for him. Next year, we already have Anderson, Gallagher and Toffoli at RW. And potentially, Armia and Perry could be resigned. Most likely they won't but if one of them is, there's no room for Caufield in the lineup. Habs will need to focus on LH left wingers with speed, size and scoring ability. I realize there have been (and currently are) small forwards that have had plenty of success in the NHL but those players had more tools in the toolbox than Caufield. Again, with a small sample size from the WJC (as I don't see any Wisconsin games), Caufield's only weapon is a great shot. He's not a very good skater (nor is he fast), not sure he'll be reliable defensively and I fear the first big hit he takes in the show will permanently scar him! Now, the reason I include him in the trade is because everybody else thinks he's a great, can't miss prospect. I don't believe it. But if it gets us a 22 year old d-man like Chychrun, sign me up!!!!</div></div>
Definitely understand both sections. Romanov could be a top 4 d next year, plus you could always make a play of Ekholm. Montreal has so many d prospects like Romanov and guhle ,Harris and norlinder that I wouldn’t want to clog up that side for several years especially moving caufield.
As for caufield, every sign points to him being good. Even if he’s a mike Hoffman type of player(30 goals with pp goals as well) he’ll be very valuable and important. I don’t like using the wjc as he wasn’t used properly. He needs a creative centre and even a creative winger. Also he needs pp time not only for numbers but for confidence. Toffoli plays lw this year so there is plenty of space for caufield. Could you acquire Chychrun and sign Hoffman, of course. Until this team gets one more dynamic forward who can score, I wouldnt move caufield. Also caufield skating is solid and he’s got good hands and can setup plays

It was time to do this 3-4 years ago when our "assets" were still in their primes (ie: Price/Weber/Galchenyuk/Gallagher)
It's too late now to blow it up because nobody will give us anything of real value for these deteriorating players

He raises a valid point..... to an extent.
The Habs have been off to these torrid starts for 5 seasons, only to stumble and waffle theor way thru the rest of the season to miss the playoffs. Here we go again. Hence the question to blow it up.
Where I disgaree is in blowing it up. From what I see, this team, far and away, is the best Canadiens team on the ice in over a decade. Bergevin, at last, has given his coaching staff real depth to work with. 3 lines that can score. A blueline that is good at keeping the puck out of the net.
At this point, I don't think the issue is the players. I think it's the coach. Julien isn't the guy to get them over the hump.
Now, if the slide continues, moving Tatar is a must happen. Moving Danault is a must happen. These are substantial assets that will garner a good price on the market.
But right here, right now? This is on Julien's head imo

It all depends on the price
Simmonds will get an other 1 year deal, but closer to league minimum because it was not effective last season. 1y 1m for no risk no reward
Anderson has a part of risk due to injury, but he was great to see when healthy, he's so powerful. CBJ probably wants NHL assets and not futures. I don't think they can find a match with MTL. For picks I do it
Virtanen has a **** attitude, MTL cleared players with **** attitudes, hard to see Bergevin bring you unless he think its players can act like leaders and turn things around for Virtanen
I'm not ready to overpay for Boeser. VAN isnt shopping either. They would want a great offer and i would not give them that.
edit: I could add that I saw a wanna-be insider report that CHI had talks with MTL about Saad + retained salary. Because it's a 1y deal, I'd like that cause that. Could be 2nd + 4th, similar to Anderson. Also, got an offersheet idea from Godin (Athletic). I'd offer 4.35m for 4 years (cost 2nd 2021). Target DAL that has tight cap situation with bonus. It shouldn't worry you, it's called development until they're ready. I know it's unfamiliar in Montreal but it's a very good thing believe me!
The bottom six wouldn't be as bad if we resign Kovalchuck or simply get a middle 6 winger in free agency or trade mid picks for one (Kevin Labanc for example). With this backend you could even send Petry anywhere for a top 6 winger and more if needed.
