is this a fit
I think the Krug-Graves swap is an issue for the Pens. Krug's stats on Evolving Hockey strike me as him being better than Graves offensively but worse defensively, which is not the niche the Pens are looking to fill. Add in that Krug is ~4 years older and $2M more expensive, and I don't think he's the missing piece to Dubas's puzzle.
I would at least consider a trade centered around Smith and Hayes, however.

Offseason
Hawks fans are complaining about the Rakell deal, but at least they're getting a good player. Athanasiou hasn't been a regular for them, and Raddysh's offense has sucked even by Chicago's standards.
I also doubt Yager is NHL ready. He's taken a step forwards basically everywhere this year, but I want to see if his production holds up without Jagger Firkus. I think he sees his 9 and gets sent back to the W.
On the bright side, I like the UFAs. Chatfield has been a popular RD3 pick, and a no-brainer if we can get him. DeBrusk adds a nice blend of scoring, defense, and physicality. Olofsson makes sense on a prove-it deal: he's been stuck in a 4th line role this season and has a shooting element we need more of. I don't think I'd give him 2 years, though. Dermott is good organizational depth. Pretty sure I read recently that Fleury doesn't want to move his family out of Minnesota.
Combine those guys with some of our youth and I think the Pens would have a much better supporting cast than the previous couple seasons.

Pens' fan opinion: Graves has been a poor fit in Pittsburgh. His performance is down accross the board. You want him? He's yours.

wild yes or no
This confuses me for a lot of reasons.
The odds of Geno and EK65 being traded are lower than the odds that the Pens make the playoffs this year. Stop it.
The only person you can convince to retain that much salary for so long is Mike Grier.
I'm not sure the Wild can make this work from a cap perspective until the Parise and Suter buyouts stop costing $7M+ each a season.
Why would the Wild consider moving Wallstedt? Also, Blomqvist has looked good this season and the Pens could skater prospects more.

Thinking outside the box
Not a fan from Pittsburgh's perspective.
Savard is pretty expensive for a 3rd pairing defenseman. I think we can get a better RD3 in free agency for a lower cap hit. I doubt either Chatfield or Desharnais will command $3.5M.
As for Kidney, his transition to the AHL was rough. I still think he's got a good chance to be a good NHLer, but there's less certainty around him now. I like Lucius, and don't see a reason to swap prospects.

Just some predictions
Norris has missed half of the Sens' games in the last 3 seasons, and produced at a ~49 point pace this season. There are serious concerns about his health and his ability to play up to his cap hit. No one's spending a first on a guy with those concerns with term on his contract.

Pens Rejigged
I'm not a fan.
We have two options: retool in the offseason or get as much of our youth into the lineup as possible.
If Dubas follows option A, Pettersson isn't moved, and we can afford to get better supplemental pieces than Veleno and Beauvillier - and that's a rich contract for Chatfield, IMO.
If Dubas follows option B, Veleno and the UFAs take spots away from guys who are close to the NHL like Poulin, Blomqvist, and St Ivany. I doubt that Yager is NHL ready, though.

Pettersson could just leave after 1 season and/or may want a bigger Cap Hit, so yeah, I'm pro Ryan Graves if given the choice between the two. Not sure I'd pay TWO 2nds though, I'd try to see if PIT wants the Cap Space back and see if we could pick him up for much less</div></div>
I wouldn't expect anyone to pay 2 2nds for Ryan Graves. I don't even particularly care about the price. You can have him.

Even with Smith and the 2nd going the other way, I dislike Anderson's contract so much that I'm not considering it from the Pens' perspective.
We could probably move Smith's 1 year for some low picks/prospects and use that cap space on someone like Teravainen or Mantha.

Defence wins championships
Given the Penguins lacking forward depth this season, I'm hesitant to move on from DOC unless you're overpaying.
He's a versatile guy that has shown flashes of greater offensive skill than a ~30 point pace implies, and is one of the few Penguins this season who has frequently looked like he gives a ****. And for under $1M next year.
I get the reasoning behind the deal, but I see DOC as a part of Sullivan and Dubas's game plan for the next couple seasons.

Strangely optimistic for the future of the Pens
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pens3lieve</b></div><div>all the players i targeted are bounce back candidates or for guys like josh anderson and torey krug it was more just swapping bad or overpaid contracts... i took on more $ for fewer years you'll notice, just in theory i thought that made sense for what PIT is doing...so that way we have alot of cap cleared up sooner.... then some players on 1 year deals to build their value that we can flip at the TDL...
yeah this is different bc this is me recognizing that we're not winning anything and i'm just trying to figure out what is plausible... bad or large contracts we have won't be moved for a 7th, we'll have to take $ back... then i want to leave spots open for younger players to play so thats why some questionable players are in the lineup... this team isnt' really trying to win, bc i don't think it's likely at this point... this is just us not tanking bc a full tank/rebuild is not possible...
pettersson is next year's guentzel... we don't want to move him, but keeping him doesnt' help us at all... we're not winning so i'd rather have younger players play and get experience... and unless we get a high end offer and assuming it's more a guentzel haul with mid prospects and 2nd round picks......
hopefully that all makes sense lol</div></div>
I see the method to the madness, but I disagree with the general premise. Skirting both buying and selling again doesn't do us any good. I'd like to pick a lane, be it going all in for one last push or blowing it up. To me, this team is mediocre, which is the worst thing a sports team can be.
And I don't think a full tank is impossible. A couple players will be hard to move (Graves, maybe Raks), and the big 3 should retire here. Almost everyone else is on the table.
With the Pettersson argument, part of the reason Guentzel got a lesser return is that he was pretty much guaranteed to be a rental. Pettersson is a couple years younger and could pretty easily sign an extention with a team at ~6-7M. Defensemen of that level have gotten a 1st+ at the last 3 deadlines: Hampus Lindholm, Dmitri Orlov, and Noah Hanifin. Why not the Dragon?
It makes sense, but I don't think another year like this one does us any good. The Pens need to pick a direction before time does it for them, if it hasn't already.

Strangely optimistic for the future of the Pens
I'm not particularly optimistic about this lineup.
Brown, Anderson, and Krug aren't exactly guys I think are better than what we have now.
Ludvig, St. Ivany, and Puljujarvi all strike me as guys you'd rather have as a 13th F or 7th D
Then with trade values:
I'm skeptical that Winnipeg is willing to part with Schmidt and Stanley for so little unless they're in a massive cap crunch this offseason.
Same thing as the Jets trade but the other way around for Marcus Pettersson. He's been a legit top pairing defenseman the past two seasons, and makes both Karlsson and Letang better. Quantity over quality is not the direction to go in for a player like him.
It's certainly different from the usual Pens ACGMs and there are some good ideas here. But will any of these deals fix the team's problems these past two years? Will they set us up for an easier rebuild? I'm not sure they'll do either.

Reunion Tour
I'm not a big fan of the NJD trade. Marino's had some bad defensive results this season - 3.51 GA/60 and a 39.81 GF% per evolving hockey. Part of that can be blamed on bad goaltending, but that's also the worst marks by a NJ defenseman. Marino for Jarry 1 for 1 is much better for the Devils than the Penguins.
Because of this, our goaltending is pretty sketchy. Fleury has been below average this season and turns 40 before the halfway point of next year. And Blomqvist has 1 season of goaltending in NA under his belt. It was a good one in the AHL, but that doesn't mean he'll be good in the NHL already. I wouldn't mind that tandem if we were blowing it up, but this ACGM isn't blowing it up.

The Pens are probably better off sticking Rakell on Crosby's wing more permanently, betting on a rebound season, and going from there.
The guy's been super snakebitten this season and doesn't have a whole lot of synergy with Malkin. He scored 60 points last year. 2 2nds is a lot for a guy that had such a good season so recently.

Trying to Compete
I'm going to be honest, I don't think this team fixes the problems we had last season.
Our poor depth and power play killed us. DeBrusk's power play scoring has been decent (although his 5v5 play has slipped and I think that's an expensive cap hit for him), but the Senators' PP is only 2 spots better than ours. Replacing EK with Chabot on one of our units isn't going to make it better.
Kupari is the only bottom 6 addition and he doesn't have a consistent roster spot this season. I'd rather give his spot to any of the forwards on the taxi squad other than Hamaliuk.
Neither POJ or Ludvig have looked good enough to me this season, and having one RHD in the NHL isn't an ideal situation.

He also has less TOI because he has been sent to the AHL many times. They don't send guys who have shown something back to the AHL.
I used Nail, not to show Robertson was a bust or going to be a bust (as I stated above), but to state that guys who scored big in the OHL don't always translate to the NHL and become elite.
You mentioned Reily Smith. Let's look at his first full season at 22: 20 goals, 31 assists in 82 games. So to me, it looks like Robertson could be the next Reilly Smith. A good player but by no means elite.</div></div>
Again, you remove context and misunderstand what I say. I'm not comparing him to Smith's first season. I am comparing *right now*.
Smith is scoring like that in his prime and in 2nd line minutes. Robertson is scoring like that in his 1st full season and in 4th line minutes.
Robertson isn't "the next Reilly Smith". That's where he is *now*, not where I expect him to be.
"They don't send guys who have shown something back to the AHL." Someone break the bad news to Logan Stankoven. Don't act like GMs and coaches are infallible.
"A good player but by no means elite." I love the guy and think he's super underrated. But I don't think GMs would bite on a blue-chip prospect and a 1st for Pettersson.

Okay, so it's a 1st and a B prospect for a player of Lindholm's caliber. A player of Guentzel's caliber, however, will cost more than that. Edmonton's first is probably going to be a pretty late one and Xavier Bourgault is having a down year. This is basically a 1st and a B prospect for a much better player <em>and</em> an upgrade to your goaltending. You're going to have to do a lot better.

#2 is Robertson, #1 is Nail Yakupov
Robertson's best year in the NHL is this year: 8 goals and 19 points in 41 games at age 22.
Nail Yakupov had 17 goals and 14 assists in 58 games when he was 21.
I'm not saying Robertson is a bust or going to be a bust but he hasn't shown anything yet.</div></div>
Please explain to me how having a similar scoring pace as Reilly Smith with less TOI and being much younger = hasn't shown anything yet.
And a comparison to Nail Yakupov, especially his OHL numbers, doesn't make a convincing argument. Yakupov scored really well in the OHL, that's why he went 1OA. He wasn't able to turn that into NHL success. That means nothing when talking about any other player.
But if we want to play that game:
Nick Robertson: 55 goals, 86 points in 46 games
Jason Robertson: 41 goals, 87 points in 68 games
And look how well Jason's turned out at the NHL level.
