Pens constant retool with Sid extention

Created by: Pens3lieve
Team: 2025-26 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 21, 2024
Published: Mar. 23, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
playing off my last ACGM... pens move any and all expiring deals they can for mainly prospects, change of scenery trades and moving bigger deals out...

don't take most of this too seriously, i'm not a prospect expert, and everyone and their mother including overvalues prospects at times (see Sprong, Daniel) but most of these moves are more theories about the general direction of PIT

NOTE-some of these trades happen this upcoming offseason and next years TDL in advance of the SID extention, another FA, etc...

@mokumboi your thoughts on the STL idea for Pettersson at 50% retained?

We have near 20m in cap space for next season. Why exactly should we pay a first and a very good RD prospect to dump Anderson?

Not only is Holmberg better than Acciari, but he is also cheaper and younger. Literally zero reason for Toronto to do that

Pettersson retained for one year doesn't even get you Lindstein, sir. If Krug goes they might do the conditional 2nd and a different LD prospect like Buchinger or Gaudet or Loof. Maybe even Perunovich. Lindstein isn't available.

like i said i'm not a prospect expert, i was not aware Lindstein was the reincarnated Al McInnis/Chris Pronger mutant beast defenseman lol excuse my hyperbole tears of joy

if PIT was taking Krug's contract then we'd want to be sending a longer deal the other way, like rakell, rust type stuff

lol tears of joy all good... just getting your take

Habs pass, remove Anderson, Barron, Smith and the 1st and it's a deal. We don't need to dump Anderson (who I still believe GM's value) and Smith holds no value to us with Armia already here on a cheaper contract

I did miss Reilly Smith. The second is pretty much whatever. Smith could bring up a first maybe at the deadline. So we are still paying Barron to unnecessarily get out of Anderson’s contract

Even with Smith and the 2nd going the other way, I dislike Anderson's contract so much that I'm not considering it from the Pens' perspective.
We could probably move Smith's 1 year for some low picks/prospects and use that cap space on someone like Teravainen or Mantha.

He asking you why would MTL give the Pens 2x1st and that's your answer? Keep your scraps.

Nobody ever said Lindstein was any of that stuff, but he definitely is currently the only legit top 4 D prospect in the organization. So yeah, he's a protected species. And yes, he's worth more than one season of Pettersson.

And I did not mean to move Krug to Pittsburgh, just in general.

Honestly the blues trade makes little sense for us. Petterson only has 1 more year before he needs a new contract. We are retooling/rebuilding around younger players and giving out another big extension to a LHD heading into his age 30 season is a bad move for us. We already have Krug eating up a lot of cap so adding more is just a misuse of cap space.
