There's about 9 leafs defenceman worth more than Burns. His contract makes him be worth nothing (8 million till he's 41? No thanks). Be happy he has 0 value as opposed to Karlsson and Vlasic, which have negative value.

Defending Tavares signing read discussion
There’s no point in defending the Tavares signing. It was the RIGHT move. Anytime you can grab an elite C for no assets you do it

Deal With Undervalued Players who says no
Interesting proposal and not bad but I would rather see what Heinola turns into. This deal could go either way, Laine could absolutely take off this year (he has been training HARD this off season), Heinola is playing very well on Luuko and may very well turn out better than Hannifin and we just resigned DeMelo. It’s hard enough getting FA to sign here let alone trading them right after we have signed them. That would be shooting ourselves in the foot.
Gaudreau would instantly become that playdriving winger we need and would make Pegs T9 one of the best in the league, but is only signed for 2 more yrs and is a UFA. Hannifin is good and would solidify our T4 d core for years, but again, I think Heinola has more upside and can play both sides (not sure if Hannifin can?) and Heinola can QB our PP which we desperately need.
Drafting Perfetti (getting Stasny in the meanwhile) makes our T9 pretty solid, and Heinola and Samberg graduating to pros this year negate the need for moves like this unless it was that big, puck moving RHD we need long term. Great trade idea, but Peg passes.

Dougie
the thing with trades like this, is that the leafs don't need a 'name', they have Rielly (a top 10 offensive dman in the NHL, when he's healthy). With a solid guy like Brodie to back him up, I expect a career year out of him
Behind him we have Muzzin, a seriously dependable guy, very underrated and arguably better than Rielly.
After that, we've got Dermott, a solid player who's young enough to continue to grow. Sandin who's an outstanding prospect, Holl who's semi decent
If the leafs are upgrading their blueline further, it's to get some more solid, dependable guys, not Hamilton or Doughty calibre players. We already have our #1 superstar name, it's Rielly, we don't need another. Not to mention he's up for extension in a couple seasons
Never mind the stuff we'd have to give UP to get those guys (i.e. Marner/Nylander, tons of picks etc.), it's just not worth it.

Yeah... I feel the same about the Ducks deal. Give to get I suppose.
I've stopped listening to most Canes fans takes regarding Pesce. He is a solid top four RHD, of that I have no doubt. God Level.... nope. But, you are correct in your assessment there for sure.

Yeah I agree 100%. This deal isn’t my idea, I saw several other threads with it or something very similar. Marner is a great player but I agree that it doesn’t make sense either way

think they could do better trading Murray and McCann separately but value wise it's fine

I think you are on the right path, canes probably have to add some later picks tho. I think for what the value is tho and what that would be it helps the leafs alot so I can see a trade like this going down, maybe even add in a decent RHD who needs a NHL chance like Roland McKeown

Trades actually seem pretty fair and realistic for what these teams may be looking for this offseason. You may be onto something hockeybum6..
