I'm not sure why they put him on waivers. He was a good and cheap depth D Man

It's bad for the Penguins. I wasn't a fan of it at all when it was first signed. IMO they tried to hard to make up for losing Tanev to Seattle by overpaying McGinn

Carter is pretty much unmovable. Can't be bought out, can't be sent down, nobody would want him, Carter will not accept a trade to any team that happens to have cap space. This is pound for pound the worst contract in the NHL now.

Penguins need to eliminate these contracts immediately
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>For the record, we'd accept the 2023 first and Hallander for Henrique with 50% retention ($2,912,500). You get to keep Joseph, and you could probably talk us into taking Rutta for cap purposes instead of Hallander if that helps (I don't know how well he's been contributing for you).
Vancouver hasn't reactivated Demko for tonight's game, so with only 4 more games left before the trade deadline, risking significant assets on him before you learn how he's recovered from his injury n November would be terribly risky, in my opinion. I know that you're not the OP, but I just thought I'd say this.</div></div>
I don't mean any disrespect in this but I wouldn't give up a 1st rounder for Henrique, especially when I'm not convinced that the Penguins are true contenders at this point. The only way I would give up a first is they could get Timo Meier somehow. I'm not sure that Demko is an upgrade over Jarry either. And when you factor in all the health concerns like you stated, I'd probably pass on Demko. Rutta has been okay but it would be nice to have the money spent on him to spend on the bottom six.

2016 Replay
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Haymaker26</b></div><div>I like the thought process, but I don't think it's much of a solution.
Gurianov and Kapanen have essentially been in the same situation for a couple seasons now. I'd rather pay out on a guy who's more proven than hoping a change of scenery works.
Our defense is absolutely an issue, every other team that gives up as many shots as we do is in the Bedard race. A 37 year old Alex Goligoski who's been Minnesota's 7th defenseman isn't going to solve that.
As far as defensive play goes, Max Domi isn't ideal either, but he is at least an upgrade offensively.
Stalock's been surprisingly good this season, but I'm also not sure if he's really going to make much of a difference.
On paper, at least, I don't think this team is much better than what we're doing right now.</div></div>
Yeah it's far from guaranteeing a better team but I do think there is some potential that it might. There just isn't a whole lot of options for this team unfortunately and I just don't think this team as constructed now is even close to being a contender. The only way is if Crosby, Malkin, and Jarry play out of their minds.

Washington Capitals signed Dylan Strome (5 Years / $5,000,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ColonelX</b></div><div>There's a case to be made that he was inconsistent with team's that were far from being easy to play in, Arizona's whatever and he then went to the Blackhawks on their way down from being playoff relevant paired with the off-ice raping story dark cloud / media attention on the players night in/night out. Finally playing out for a good team and looked like a decent playmaker.</div></div>
I guess I compare this to the deal the Pens gave Rakell earlier this season. It’s a similar deal and I was a little critical at first but Rakell has worked out good so far. Who knows this might turn out to be a real good deal, but there is some risk here I think.
