Maybe the Canes can swap out Forbort for Grzelcyk? That's more of a traditional cap dump, in my eyes.

Skjei has played well for the Canes for 3 straight seasons, so they likely can trade him for at least a 2nd, I think, if not a late 1st. I'd imagine that any first rounder that the Canes would get for Skjei would have to be top-13 or top-15 protected.

This is total crap for the Sharks sorry to say, nothing of actual value.</div></div>
I'm not sure, however, NMCs have historically severely limited trade returns over the years. The Taylor Hall and Patrick Kane sagas remind me of that. We'll see what happens, but do not be surprised if the Karlsson return is disappointing.

They don't have the cap space move to free up yet (aka. the Tyler Myers dump), but the OEL buyout money was fully spent, it seems, on Soucy and Cole. Those are not nothing moves, especially if you think that Soucy has untapped ability to actually play a top-4 role. Putting pieces together, it feels like they're negotiating another salary dump in order to make another transaction.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Knuckl3s</b></div><div>Based on the free agency he just had, I don't see Allvin giving into what Pesce's contract demands could be. Signing a 30 year old to his last big payday doesn't make much sense when you've got a bluechip prospect in your organization how profiles to fill a somewhat similar role. That said, I do think Pesce is more durable than most other players of the same mold, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't still be without significant risk</div></div>
I know what the sentiments among the fanbase are, but I just wonder about Vancouver's ownership and the urgency that they may feel with Pettersson entering his prime years and the pending extension talks. It feels like they finally want playoffs after years of stagnation even if it isn't the smartest play for their organization.

Right, and those other teams were not offering what his agents wanted in either term or AAV. The Canes would, out of all of the rumored teams, have by far the best shot at winning the whole thing. I think the next best team rumored to be on his list was Dallas. Unlike other teams, as well, the Canes can offer the win-now pieces that Ottawa is requesting.

Look carefully at the roster. Wheeler's replacing Fast here, so he's definitely an upgrade there from an offensive POV. Taylor Hall is replacing Teuvo, so a significant offensive upgrade is here, as well, on top of an extra year of control.

Pesce to Seattle and Laf to Carolina
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ennis</b></div><div>Why is everyone obsessed with Laf, dude is not that good.</div></div>
Laf has some interesting appeal for Carolina in the same way that Kotkaniemi did two seasons ago. They're both players in their early 20s with somewhat tumultuous starts to their careers, but simultaneously, if both of them hit, they, along with Jarvis/Necas/Svechnikov, would extend the contention window by at least another decade even as very good players like Pesce/Skjei/Teravainen potentially leave and get larger contracts elsewhere.

I imagine that St. Louis would be offering their three 2023 1sts to get Keller. In a situation like that, I would think that Carolina would need to offer Jarvis to outbid such a package.

Keller is a major upgrade from the current rendition of Jarvis, especially from a goal-scoring perspective (by far the biggest need on the team), and has five seasons remaining. Canes likely are willing to pay the moon to get that final piece.

Any Pesce trade likely has a related extension, so I didn't feel the need to state it. I'd imagine that the Oilers are offering Broberg + 1st, so Rosen + 1st makes sense as an asking price. Canes could change that to a 2025 1st considering that the Sabres are on the verge of actually breaking through as a playoff team and the 2025 pick is therefore likely to be later.

What makes a Carter buyout palatable to Carolina is that there is no cap penalty whatsoever for 2024, when they actually need the cap space.

Winnipeg-Carolina Blockbuster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DumplingAndChase</b></div><div>You might be wrong.
Yes, Seth Jarvis is an amazing young player. He might have a 20 goal season one day. He isn't signed, and Connor has had a 44 goal season on a sweet deal. He's worth 3 firsts by himself.
And signing Pesce for 8 years is a mistake</div></div>
I think that Jarvis is well capable of one day being a 30 goal scorer, though I see him as more like a rich man's Ehlers than a Connor-type. Because of the difficulties that I know Winnipeg has with UFAs, I sort of wrote that proposal as an on-purpose overpay to finally secure that top-pairing right-handed defenseman that I'm sure the Winnipeg brass has long coveted. On that contract, Pesce will at least give 4 seasons of great defensive play for any team that he plays for.

Plus the fact that New York State native Pesce probably has no desire to play in Winnipeg.</div></div>
There's a huge difference between the Faulk trade and this proposal: Seth Jarvis and Philly's (very high) 2nd. In fact, the whole reason why I wrote this trade is because I thought that the Jets would covet Jarvis enough to give up their actually-premium trade pieces for. Canes don't have a real need for Dubois with Kotkaniemi developing well, but we do have a need for the skillsets that Connor and Ehlers provide, especially Connor.

I have a feeling that Winnipeg is going to do a full-blown overhaul very soon, though I might be wrong. Also, Seth Jarvis is a far more valuable asset than the kinds of 28-32nd overall firsts that we own. Jarvis alone would return a high 1st+ from a team.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Really? a I really can't think of a time it's happened, when a player who is under contract for a full year, is given permission to negotiate with another team for his next contract. The silliness is that the Cup contending Canes tell a key player to "Hurry up and sign an extension so we can trade you. Of course if you can't come to an agreement, you are welcome back as Cane." No, it's crazy. Even crazier is for the Jets to sign a Dman who will be almost 30 years of age when the eight year contract starts.</div></div>
It is almost exactly what happened, note for note, with Justin Faulk three seasons ago. The Canes gave permission for Faulk and his team to negotiate an extension with interested teams. The Ducks, the Blues, and an undisclosed third team agreed to terms on an identical contract, but the Ducks backed away at the last minute because of disagreements regarding the conditional picks related to Kase's concussions, leading the Blues to acquire Faulk in a trade-and-sign. The Pesce negotiations are likely to reach the same conclusion if the Canes don't extend themselves.

It's not crazy to think that this is what will happen with Pesce. If the Canes don't feel like the extension number is good for their team, Pesce's group is likely to find another franchise willing to pay it. I would think that a team like Winnipeg would especially be willing to pay top dollar, since big name players rarely choose to play in Winnipeg for various reasons.

The Ducks team defense last season was one of the worst that I've personally ever seen in the cap era. Gibson was close to .900 despite facing over 37 shots per game with large amounts of high-danger chances. The 4.00 GAA is a testament to how bad Anaheim was, not Gibson. Mark my words, if Gibson is placed behind the Carolina defense, he will be Juuse Saros 2.0.

The big piece that you're forgetting to mention is the already-good NHL player, 21-year old Seth Jarvis. That's the piece that I thought would make the trade interesting for Seattle to consider, especially since Beniers and Wright are in the same age range as him.
