The Canes Dont Actually Need to Move Any Defensemen
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>spockrock</b></div><div>They don’t need to move any, but they’re still gonna move Pesce before the season starts.</div></div>
If they get the right compensation. If they don't, own-rentaling will still be super-valuable. I'm saying that the Canes are the team with all of the leverage in any trade talks because they are 2 million underneath the cap WITH all of those defensemen.

I would imagine DeAngelo gets 3rd pairing role</div></div>
Then the Canes can run Orlov-DeAngelo. That's still hilarious.

The Canes are 2 million under the cap WITH the comically-loaded blueline. They can just conserve cap space and still fit Lindholm or, more likely, a forward with some term in via a deadline trade. The Canes don't have to do a damned thing until March if they really want to.

A Much Simpler Jets-Canes Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>I love Nino... Teravainen is hands down the better player. Both are rentals, and I get Teuvo's cap hit is 1.4 million higher, but he's also a 60+ point player, where Nino has career highs in the 50s... Nino and Teuvo are also comparable defensively and Teuvo is several years younger. Winnipeg should be adding, not Carolina</div></div>
Here's the problem I'm thinking about, though: is Brind'Amour willing to play Turbo with Staal and Fast rather than Martinook in order to boost the 3rd line's offense? We all know how great Nino-Staal-Fast is as a unit, and he'd likely play the lines that way if given a choice.

They need better top-4 D. Skjei is a significant upgrade over what they have. The point of my trade for Winnipeg is about Jarvis, though. That's the real golden ticket for a team that needs young stars.

Canes would succeed Orlov and Burns with Nikishin and Morrow. Slavin is an easy re-signing, similar to Aho. Canes can likely fill the last slot via trade or UFA.

I bet the tone would change drastically if a first was offered to take on Petry. The Sabres would be fools not to take that.

It's different when it comes to UFAs versus being paid to take on a contract. The two seconds have significant value.

I think that it's far more about the sweeteners than contract value. Petry isn't awful by any means and he's a great veteran influence, but his contract currently is an overpay. Buffalo is getting close but, similar to a team like Detroit, isn't quite a playoff team yet, so the draft picks should be a nice way to boost their capital.

Canes Take a Dramatic Pivot
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JoeROFLCOPTER</b></div><div>Walman and Seider were a phenomenal pairing until the whole team started tanking. Walman, barring a significant drop off, is great.
Furthermore, an issue is that although it may be better <em>currently</em>, Detroit has a phenomenal LD prospect pool. Skjei would be an expensive bandaid over an already scabbed wound.</div></div>
To me, what Detroit should do depends on how high you are on Wallinder becoming a top-4 defenseman. I'm pretty sure that Edvinsson has what it takes to become one, but whether to acquire and sign a top-4 veteran like Skjei long-term IMO depends on what you think of Wallinder.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JoeROFLCOPTER</b></div><div>Why are we paying even close to the same</div></div>
Skjei had a better season than Pesce last year statistically. He likely gets nearly as much in a trade. Also, Detroit's left side is not great. Skjei would strongly elevate that defense and actually give a legitimate top-4 caliber partner for Seider.
Skjei-Seider
Walman-Holl
Ghost-Jokiharju
Is leagues beyond what the defense currently constitutes.

The two trades were more of a base. I know how hard it is for teams to move salary, however, I also know that the Canes' assets are sought after, unlike Pittsburgh's.

Two-fold. Both contracts are being sent to San Jose for Karlsson, which then frees up space for Tarasenko. It keeps our team as good and simultaneously improves the cap issues in 2024 (mainly because it reduces our pending UFA and RFA count to just Aho/Necas/Jarvis).

The fact that my trade proposal was mostly salary neutral made it so the return was greater for the Canes. I would assume that the normal return would be Rosen or a 2025 1st, not both.

Potentially the Best Defensive Pairing in the West
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Severson proved how ridiculous the Columbus signing was. He didn't even want to go venture into free agency because he knew no team what offer nearly as much term as Columbus did. It has to be about the money to be willing to play in Columbus, it's not like it's childhood dream, or the want to be on a competitive team.</div></div>
I personally think that the Canes and Pesce will actually agree on an extension and that the EK talks are contractual leverage on Carolina's end. I think that they will eventually agree to something like 6 years. Sure, maybe 5 is ideal, but considering that countless clubs are known to hand out 8 years to scarce commodities like premium RHD, I think that they find a way to settle at 6.

It's not really about "wanting" so much as it is what the premium RHD clearly are able to get in UFA (see the Severson sign-and-trade). Some organizations are more willing to stomach this reality than others.

The Canes were injured to s***, unlike Dallas. They simply got goalied in the ECF due to that reason. And although Pesce's great, Karlsson may actually be an overall upgrade and (depending on the retention numbers) a better fit for the Canes' cap structure. It would again be a very close race in the playoffs for everyone.
