Something is better than nothing
This return probably would've been solid for Nylander last year, but he's worth more now. He's got the highest value he's ever had, on pace for almost 50 goals and 110 points. That's gonna net a larger return than that. Calgary is probably throwing in a 1st or so as well.
Decent comparable would be Tkachuk for Huberdeau+Weegar+1st+mid prospect trade. Tkachuk had just put up just over 100 points, similar to what Nylander is on pace for. Huberdeau put up 115 points, though he wasn't as physical and was older. Weegar was one of the best defensemen in the league, fantastic shut down guy and pretty good offensively too.
Based off of that, Nylander isn't quite as valuable as Tkachuk was then due to RFA Status, age, and physicality. However, Lindholm/Tanev are quite a bit less valuable than Huberdeau and Weegar were back then. So Calgary should at least be sending back next years 1st, plus a prospect.

Luke Schenn is 34 years old and already not very good. 3 years of "at least he can hit" is the exact same situation the Leafs have with Ryan Reaves right now. A 1st for "at least he can hit" is an unbelievably terrible trade.

Xhekaj cost a high second or a first for any other team, but for Toronto or Boston, the cost is a superstar like Nylander, Reilly or McAvoy</div></div>
I think Seeler is higher. Very underrated defensively. I think he could be a 2nd + mid level prospect if there's competition, which there should be if he's available.

This D core is worse than before. Gio should be 7th D. That's the only thing I agree with.
Schenn isn't what he used to be, he's also hurt. Hasn't played since October 10th. So trading a 1st pick is horrible. Even if he wasn't hurt, he's a bottom pairing D. He was bad at defense last year, and fed most of his offense off of Quinn Hughes. He came to Toronto and his offense fell off, even though he was playing with Rielly most of the time.
Brodie may not be flashy or that tough, but he's one of the most consistent defensive defensemen year in and year out. His positioning is great, which limits opportunities. If he has to go to bring in Tanev and Zadorov, so be it. But it's not a great move as it only boosts defense a little bit.
Timmins has just gotten back from injury, but was decent before. Give him a sec to get readjusted. Lagesson is an AHLer. Hes not a full-time roster player at all; he's only there because Klingberg and Liljegren are out.
Middleton is...meh. So it Lyubushkin. Both are physical, but that doesn't make them great players.
Essentially, McCabe and Gio were the only full time roster players who were bottom pairing guys. You now have Bush, Middleton, Schenn, and arguably Zadorov. This is worse. Maybe even significantly. Zadorov and Tanev are the only two additions that are useful. But giving up Brodie for them isn't that great.

McDavid Trades that would be fun
The thing that I find most difficult about a McDavid trade is that the asking price for him would essentially reverse Edmonton's and whatever the other team's place is. Kraken get star power, but become thinner offensively. Edmonton gets deeper offensively, but they lose star power. Same goes for Carolina.
If anybody accepts a McDavid trade, they're gonna have to be deep everywhere and probably have a well-stacked prospect pool as well. Only teams I think could even <em>kind of</em> fit that description is Buffalo, Columbus, and Ducks. Even then, those teams may be tank the future and me in an immediate win now mode without necessarily being good enough to do it... exactly where Edmonton is.

Not for that return. If they're selling off players, they're not gonna be looking for vets in return. Or at the very least more needed players, such as a defenseman or top 6 forward.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Draisaitl wouldn't get 100 points away from McDavid and gets the vast majority of his points with McDavid on the ice. 40% of his 5v5 time last season was with McDavid. Over the past few seasons its always around a 3rd of his 5v5 time and all the PP and that's where he gets 75% of his points. He's also average at best defensively, this season below average. Right now, Nylander is playing better. Draisaitl is definitely overrated. Put Nylander with McDavid and he scores 50 goals and 130 points</div></div>
So he plays less than half of his time with McDavid? 40% is less than half. As for his even strength vs powerplay points, he also gets less than half of his points last season on the powerplay. Of his 128 points last season, 66 were even strength. 62 were powerplay. For McDavids 152 points last year, 82 were even strength. 71 were powerplay. So really, they both benefitted like crazy from the best powerplay in history, and it was that because draisaitl was so effective at taking one-timers from basically the goal line that it went in almost every time.
I'm not arguing that Draisaitl is as good McDavid. Don't get me wrong there; McDavid is the best player in the world by a mile, maybe the most overall skilled player in hockey history. McDavid and Draisaitl is this generations Crosby/Malkin, where both are good enough to drive their own line, but are better together.
So, to put it blunty, Nylander's resume just doesn't add up to Draisaitl's (let's not forget that Drai won the Hart when McDavid was injured half the season). Nylander is a really good player, but he's nowhere near Draisaitl. Nylander has only put up 40 goals one time, and it was exactly 40. Draisaitl put up 50 goals 3 times. Draisaitl has put up 6 seasons with over 40 assists, Nylander only has 3 and never crossed 50. Draisaitl has put up over 50 assists each of the last 5 seasons.
As for the trade itself, why would Edmonton trade a much-needed center with 2 years left at a very team friendly deal for another winger with one year left before becoming very un-team friendly?

Nylander hasn't hit 90 points once yet. Draisaitl has hit 100 points 4 times. Draisaitl has his own line separate from McDavid most of the time, that's a stupid argument. The only reason they played so much together last year was because of the Powerplay

IMO Leafs have maybe a 3-4 year window to win with this team, so Larsson will still be in his prime. Lily will still be a small, soft 6th RD that gets less than 10 points every year. Timmins will be better than him when healthy.
Yes Brodie is a better D but I’m addressing the Leafs needs and big Z will get good offers. It depends on what Cgy wants to do. If they want to try and stay competitive, they will want a good D in return or if they are rebuilding, they may prefer prospects and draft picks.
But we are just arguing opinions. I see your point of view but mine is just different.
👍</div></div>
Liljegren has more than 10 points <em>last year</em>. He had almost 20 points. He might be on the small side and not very physical, but he's an effective 2-way defenseman. Also the dude is 24. Let him develop before firing him into the sun. He's also not a 3rd pair D. He's been on the 2nd pair all but a couple games, and been good there. Adam Larsson is 31 right now. He's out of his prime, and based on trends, he's gonna start his decline relatively soon. By that 4th year of the window, he's probably gonna be washed. Why would you give up a rising player for a falling player during the window? On a much larger scale, you can ask Stan Bowman how that worked out with Panarin.
If you agree that Brodie is better than Zadorov, why would the Leafs give up the better player plus some for a worse player? Just because he hits? That would be foolish. The Leafs have McCabe for that. Hold onto the one legitimate defensive defenseman that they have unless something better comes along. There's no need to make this trade, especially when Giordano has to play 20 minutes a night any time a defenseman goes down. An extra D is more needed than exchanging a good defenseman for a less good defenseman.
As for Sammy, you can't trade him without another option. He has shown he can be good, and he's been good recently. Trading him now only to have a bad Martin Jones back up an unproven Woll is a terrible idea.

I do like the Bison King addition. While he won't ever live up to the 4th overall hype, he has been decent defensively over the last couple years. IF that's all he stays, then that's fine. If he develops better, great. Low risk addition, and he is basically guaranteed to be better than reaves.
As for the big trade, I'd be hesitant to move Bertuzzi. He got off to a slow start, but I feel like he is finally beginning to work. Downgrading from Bert to Dube is very risky. I'd also be hesitant to break up that 3rd line with how good they have been. I do like the Zadorov-Klingberg exchange for each team. Zadorov brings the additional defense the Leafs need, while Klingberg can bring the offense the Flames need while being more capable of being sheltered in that system.
I'm sure that Boston is just a placeholder team when it comes to retaining, but if not, then Boston can't retain and won't retain.

I think that when it comes to Huberdeau and the Flames, the fans might already be rioting. Bottom of the league after at least fighting for playoffs last year. Huberdeau is once again terrible with his massive contract lasting seemingly an eternity. 1 year of Kuzy and Mantha may not be great right now, but if they don't work, they're UFAs at the end of the year, and it will give Calgary a ton of money to play with this offseason

Not sure Nashville would do that trade. If they trade Saros, it's because they are rebuilding. Acquiring a 27-year-old winger who will be paid 10 mil+ is the opposite of rebuilding. A realistic Saros trade would be more likely Liljegren, Cowan, Minten, and a 1st. Liljegren as the roster player, Cowan/Minten as higher end b-level prospects, and a 1st cause a 1st.

I couldn't see a drai to buffalo trade centered around Dylan Cozens. Solid 2nd line center, don't get me wrong. Still got some upside potential I think, but not the guy I'd want back for a Drai trade. I would want both of Benson and Savoie. Add to that Owen Power. Is that unreasonable for Buffalo, absolutely. But Draisaitl is such a good player that some GM somewhere would give that. 1 elite, young player. 1 elite prospect. 1 high end prospect. Both prospects in the NHL or 1 year away.

Drafted better 23
They had quite possibly one of the worst drafts this last year that I have ever seen. They are not good enough to draft for position, so they should've taken best player available. Right as I thought they were gonna take Michkov, Leonard, Benson, or one of those guys, they taken Dmitri Simashev. I had to google that guy to figure out who he even was. He was ranked in the high 2nd round on Craig Button's rankings. The came their 12th overall pick, which I thought was gonna be Nate Danielson, Zach Benson again (somehow), Yager, Pelikka, etc. But no, it was But. Good player, but ranked 30th on Button's rankings.
If the Coyotes were smart and those were the two players they wanted in the first round for whatever reason, they should taken the Preds up on their offer. 6th overall for Askarov and a 1st (15th overall). They still could've taken Simashev there, or someone better. They could've even flipped that pick for a later first plus something and still could've probably gotten Simashev. Come on Coyotes. This is why they're playing in a college arena and are somehow not even the most competitive team calling that rink home.

Why would Kings trade Copley? Of their 3 goalies (Copley, Rittich, Talbot), he's the only one who proved he could play NHL games last year. Rittich and Talbot were trash, Copley was at least usable. If they're comfortable being left with those two, then they might as well have resigned Quick.

If the Leafs want Askarov, they're probably looking at sending back one of Knies+FIrst Rounder, Nylander, or something of that variety.

Dumba isn't really all that useful. His offensive stats are VERY quickly declining. His standard points are meh, especially last season (14 points in 71 games), but his advanced stats are worse. 0 EVO GAR is replacement level (7th D). His offensive number here last season is -6.2. I don't understand why some people are so eager to trade Liljegren, especially trades like this when it's clearly not worth it. The Leafs don't need a first. However, on a team with maybe one too many offensively-minded defensemen who can't play D, they need D who can also play defense, too. Liljegren does both a bit above average and has shown he can do it at a high level.
Brodie, Gio, McCabe are all excellent defensively minded D, but don't contribute a ton offensively. Rielly and Klingberg are solid offensively minded D, but don't contribute anything defensively. Liljegren can do both. And in the future, he'll probably do both very well

You just named the 3 players most trusted to be out there against the other teams top pairings. That is 3/4 of Toronto's defensive defensemen during the playoffs, so of course they're going to be out there for most goals against. They're the ones most likely to be out against the other teams' best scorers. Throwing Risto in that position would most certainly be worse. Just because he is physical doesn't make him good. In fact, with the exception of this year, he has NEVER been good at defense. Almost every other year, he has been terrible at defense. Throwing Risto into Brodie's position would guarantee a failure. I don't disagree that Toronto needs a more physical defenseman, but they also need that guy to be good at defense or it's not worth getting rid of Toronto's best defensive player by far.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsmustwin</b></div><div>Can you please explain why Brodie was not Riellys partner if he is so good? Why was Schenn a 3rd pair 800k defense playing 1st pair minutes whwn we have an elite top 5 shutdown defense lmao , why is every one so brain washed thinking Brodie is worth a crap?</div></div>
Because Brodie was Reilly's partner for a lot of last year. And then Reilly was injured a lot this year. And when he was healthy, the lines were scrambling. Reilly had 333 minutes played with Brodie, the 3rd highest TOI by pair. Reilly and Schenn were just over 100. Also, defensive pairings get mixed up purposefully. Coaches don't just automatically put their top 2 defensemen together. Vegas doesn't put Theodore and Pietrangelo together. Edmonton doesn't have Nurse and Bouchard together. Boston doesn't put Lindholm and McAvoy together.
As for the actual stats that matter, Brodie has a 9.1 EVD (Even Strength Defense above replacement in GAR measurements) this year, good for first in the entire league. Risto, much better than I thought though it is a MAJOR anomaly in his career (only other time being positive was 19-20 when he had a .5), had a 7.1 EVD. Brodie consistently averages about a 5 EVD. As for offense, they are much more mixed than I thought. With both Buffalo and Philly, Ristolainen has been around average and a couple years around 3-4 EVO. Brodie is very similar. Though Brodie has one year with 6.2 EVO.
When it comes down to who you want as a defensive defenseman, Brodie is much more consistent and much better overall defensively. If you want an offensive defenseman, results are mixed. Risto may drive his own offense better, but Brodie supports it well.
So, with all that in mind, do I want Brodie at 5, or Risto at 5.1? Most certainly Brodie.

This does nothing to help Toronto. In reality, it hurts them. I wouldn't give up Nylander alone for that deal, much less adding Holmberg. Their offensive takes a hit big take while their defense mildly improves.
Brodie for Risto is terrible for Toronto. Brodie is one of the best defensive defensemen in the entire league. Like top 5 at his best. Doesn't have a whole lot of offensive upside, but doesn't need it. On the other hand, Risto with Buffalo was solid offensively but horrendous defensively. With the Flyers, he was barely average. Definitely not worth the cap hit. Toronto doesn't need that. Especially when half their roster is already inconsistent.

Ristolainen is not as good as Brodie defensively at his best. At his best offensively, he's a severe liability defensively. There is not upside for Toronto to swap the two, especially when Toronto already has Klingberg. Adding the 1st makes it even worse.
