<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Of course the Leafs can keep Marner for a year, not resign him, and use that cap roster. Look at the Leaf roster this season, Bertuzzi, Domi, Tavares, Reaves, Jarnkrok, Samsonov, Brodie, Benoit, all UFAs which the Leafs signed without compensation to the other teams that "lost" them.
Why are Leaf fans so selfish?
He's a near impossible trade anyway. He likely only wants to play for a good team so he can keep his numbers up his contract year. Good team don't have the cap. And why would a poor team give up much for him....11m can be spend on just a good UFA or UFA(s).</div></div>

Not a leafs fan. Just saying that it isn't a wise move to let one of your top 3 most valuable assets leave for nothing. Look at Calgary for example. They let Johnny Hockey walk after he put up 115 points and they never recovered. Pietrangelo leaving the Blues, Panarin and Bobrovsky leaving CBJ. If you aren't sure you'll be able to resign a high end player, a team needs to be able to recoup something for him. A player with trade value like Marner can help kickstart a retool by trading for younger players or established player that otherwise won't hit free agency. Kinda like what the Jets did with PLD. That was a player that wasn't going to resign, so they traded him for a very good top 6 forward in Vilardi, very good middle-6 guy in Iafallo, plus a couple other assets. Marner has plenty more value, even with his high cap hit (which a 3rd team helping retain is becoming very common) and a NMC.

I can't understate how brutal of a take this entire post is.

Let's start with the most wild. Trading Rantanen for a bunch of okay. Rantanen is coming off back to back 100 point seasons, a perennial 40-50 goal, and player, and he's got 12 points in 9 games these playoffs. Even against Dallas, who is difficult to score on at their worst, he has 3 points in 4 games. That is fine. His defensive lapses can be outweighed by the offense. Marino and Mercer are fine, but no where close to Rantanen's value in a trade. You're looking at Eichel territory (a 1st, quality roster player, high end prospect, plus a pick), if not a bit more. Let's also just ignore that Marino is unnecessary in this trade if the Avs just hold onto Girard.

Next up, the Merzlikins trade and buyout. Just, why? Nichuskinen will either have his contract terminated, or a team will be willing to take a chance on him while giving up nothing in return. And if neither happens, he will still be a quality player for the Avs. There is no point in trading him for a couple picks and buying out a goalie that will cost the team millions over their entire window. The Avs will most likely not have to pay anything to move Val, definitely not that much.

Signing Samsonov and Ned, two of the most inconsistent goalies, to fix the inconsistent goalie problem is strange.

Finally, Landeskog is skating. He might even return during these playoffs. I don't see why he would be forced into retirement. Anything can happen of course, but it seems unlikely at this point.
