(DET/MTL) - Lindström, 2025 4th (DET) for Petry
Awful! Lindstrom + 4th pick should had been the price for Petry with no 50% salary retention.

(DET/MTL) - Lindström, 2025 4th (DET) for Petry
I’m surprised that two years’ retention didn’t get a bit more than that in trade, but conversely it really didn’t make any sense for us to have him taking up a roster spot while waiting for the ideal trade. The younger players need minutes.
I’m sure playing for his hometown team is a great development for Jeff and his family, so best of luck.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AStovetop</b></div><div>Hoffman could get back a 2nd with a decent season. And if Pitt falls in the top 10 I don't mind a 2025 First with Pitts aging core. They'll likely only get worst, and potentially not enough cap to re-sign Guentzal, making that unprotected first even lower.
And most importantly only 1.5 retention??? That's absolutely wild. We knew the haul woul dbe a lot less with very little retention and that's what we got here. Fair deal all around IMO</div></div>
Hoffman isn't getting back a 2nd. He hasn't been good in 4 years. He'll likely get a mid round pick retained, and San Jose only has 1 retained spot left, so are they going to use it on him? I doubt it.
Yeah, the retention is low, I'm assuming that's why the package wasn't as good as it could've been.

Montreal = Get rid of Hoffman, Get rid of Pitlick, get a 2nd in 2025 + get a decent top 4 option retained, also pick up a decent young AHL player. Honestly they make out the best short term and long term in this trade.
Pittsburgh = Give up a 1st round pick for Karlsson, and a 2nd + Desmith + Petry + Legare. Paid a price to dump salary, but get the best Offensive Defensemen in the NHL for dirt cheap. Short Term W, Long term Yikes
San Jose = Eat salary and give up the best offensive player in the NHL for a top 10 protected pick? Yikes

Why not just wait until next summer when he's UFA? Do they really think he's gonna explode for 30G+ after coming off an injury-plagued season? We've seen these types of contracts backfire so many times. I just don't see the upside.

I don't think it's right to say that the package included a 14th overall pick. The fact that Foote was the 14th overall pick in 2017 doesn't mean he's equivalent to that now. Nashville let him go without a qualifying offer, so apparently he was the least valuable part of the package, not the most valuable as your list would have us believe.
However, even if you strike him from the list, I still see your point.

You get Cat at under 8M for what will likely be his most productive years. Let someone else pay him for 8 years when this contract is done.

Really great deal for the Wings and DeBrincat. Still one big pay day left for DeBrincat at the end of this thing

Detroit got Kubalik from Chicago. For free.
Detroit got DeBrincat from Ottawa. For Kubalik, nobody prospect, and a potentially low conditional first.

They paid inflation on market price, probably to keep the team's fragile confidence.
And a short term because they will get rid of him ASAP if his star starts to dwindle, like Fleury and Lehner (soon)..

So, basically, Vegas thinks Reilly Smith is worth less than Teddy Blueger.
Given that the same draft pick from the Blueger trade is used in this trade.
