Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 4 - Mid Season Slump
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I mean...I know most of you go with the "business is business"....but Brodie was a workhorse for this team....has a NTC....dad recently died this past September....wife has M.S.
I just don't see the team approaching him to waive his NTC and dump his salary while making him move away from his family for a few months. There's a human element we on the outside quickly ignore...meanwhile teams want to build a build a family-like culture....and Brad is supposedly known for paying special attention to the well-being and health of his players and their family....
so while I think it would make sense to try and snag a 2nd rounder for him and move the salary out....I will simply be very surprised if they look to move him</div></div>
I guarantee they won't trade him, or anyone substantial for that matter. I think the Leafs <em>should</em> retool at the TDL, but it's not happening. We are going to stand pat and retool in the offseason

Shanahan wont let em. U have 2 of your big 4 having career years with Matthews pushing 70 goals for the first time since Selanne and Mogilny in 92-93
With the big 4 u got to go for it. Not as hard as last year but cant do the standpat thats been done already. Cant do it twice in the Matthews era as whats a prospect who may not even be here when Matthews just entering his prime gonna do. By the time the kids start pushing his 4 year deal gonna be up and he gonna go see yah lul.
Brad's calling about every Dman under the sun rn got a feeling hes waiting to see by the TDL whose available before making his move. But yea need to address things and give em a chance.</div></div>
Remind me, did Dubas go all in when Matthews hit 60? Or literally any year other than last year? It's very rare that the Leafs truly go all in.

Doesnt That Look Nice

I don't either, but enough Leafs fans on here seem to think otherwise that I figured it's at least worth poking a little fun. Boone and Jiricek aren't going anywhere, so the actual value is irrelevant. But...at a bare minimum he's definitely worth at least the Foligno return (1st and 4th), considering he's a center with similar leadership and grittiness qualities, at half the cap hit, 3x the term, and better production at the time of the trade despite playing 75% of the games.

Dubas was a bad gm
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DJP1117</b></div><div>Holl was extremely under appreciated on this team. For 2M what Justin Holl brought to this team could not be replaced by anyone making less then that by a signing or in the system. The leafs are actually dealing with his loss this season. They havent been the same on the PK. Same with Kerfoot. He brought an element to this team that nobody has stepped up to fill yet consistently.
I dont think Keeping Holl and Kerfoot was that bad of an idea. The leafs couldnt afford to resign McCann to the 5mil plus he wanted. Thats probably why they chose tolet him go over kerfoot.</div></div>
Leafs fans liked using Holl as a scapegoat.
It's easier to blame 1 player rather than the entire team for playoff failures.
See Gardiner, Kadri, Andersen...

I mean, you can not like the moves, but it's pretty obvious logic why the moves were made
Hyman was a 28 injury prone guy with a 40 point career high and he was demanding a massive long term contract that is almost all well past the aging curve point of no return, what he's done in edmonton is basically unprecedented.
McCann was exposed because the Leafs needed RD more than anything and the prices for guys significantly worse than Holl were insane and the Leafs had one of the best offences in the league.
You can pick two worse moves that made less sense from any gm in the league easily.

As to what the two teams I listed made a move I think is what TOR should eye
Cause if u can have a young RFA top 4 Dman or a guy with some term who u could use for 2.5years or more why not do it</div></div>
If I ignore the fact that Shanny had control over Dubas - the Dubas expiring contract forced Dubas to make wholesale changes a the TDL. He had to win a round at all costs. I think they flipped too much of the roster and lack of familiarity became a problem.

McMann is headed to IR which allows the Leafs to add Bertuzzi back to the main roster.
Seems like Jarnkrok could also be headed there after taking a shot to the hand in practice

Centers are the ones mainly taking the faceoffs and are the guys u can put almost anywhere. Wings its a bit more selective depending on their speciality
Boston as soon as they got him made him the netfront guy and it worked perfectly for them. When he went behind Bergeron or Zacha would temporarily go there to cover his spot. With JT struggling and the PP sliding swapping him and Bert makes sense rn. As Matthews can win faceoffs</div></div>
Yeah, but it allows you to run your PP through Matthews with Bert and JT picking up trash...
would rather have 2 centres on PP1; in case someone gets thrown out, especially bc JT there means auto win

Its honestly baffling to me that there are people who want the Leafs to buy at this years deadline. The Leafs tried to patch the holes in this roster over the offseason (and I commend the effort), but Treliving clearly wants something entirely different from Dubas. Sell the pending UFAs at this years deadline, go out and address the blueline in the offseason with a "TJ Brodie like" signing (Matt Roy in particular stands out as a fantastic target), and clean up at the draft.
We have enough money and a clearer picture of the future to help us retool this roster to Treliving's liking. This year was the awkward transition phase between 2 GMs. Go out and get a young guy like Frost at the TDL and call it a day

I think we're finding out why Jones was a 900,000 UFA signing. He's just not that good, and with the workload, it seems to coming apart
I haven't seen in the past five games except for the highlights (I'm in Mexico) but poor goaltending hasn't helped. Admitting the defence hasn't either.
Please no trades giving away futures this TDL. Go with what you have, and retool with the the kinda lots of cap next summer.
If anything (and it's not happening), the Leafs should be sellers this TDL.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I'm in this boat....don't love the Willy contract but don't hate it...but yes...he's a common whipping boy if he goes a few games without lighting up the stat sheet.
Re-signing Bert...it would be interesting to know what he'd be looking at on a 3-4yr deal. If he goes off in the playoffs again demand will be up for him but maybe he's open to a reasonable number right now. Risk on both sides for sure
Rielly has been great this year...but we've seen how much better he can be when paired with a defensive d-man
McCable has been good....he's prone to turnovers when making cheeky outlets and sometimes pinches at inopportune times....but overall good
Lilly needs to keep on this projection....most nights he's just a solid presence
TJ has gone from one of our most reliable guys to someone you can't trust right now
Gio...I just think his body can't match up with his desire and IQ...still ok but another guy who has understandably taken a step back
Benoit...I love more and more...don't need him to have more minutes or responsibility but happy to send him out there every night</div></div>
Yeah, he and Marner will be in the same boat from now on IMO, they both will have similar contracts so the standard for them is to play to that contract
Honestly, if the number is 4.5 for 3 years, I'd pull the trigger... Bert does so much that you don't see on paper, but you'll notice come playoffs
Rielly has legitimately been a top 7 defensemen in the NHL this year... And he's not 7
McCabe's human though, he will make mistakes, but I know I can send him out there and he'll make something happen
Agreed on Lilly, but look at final part of McCabe description
Agreed and TJ and Brodie
Benoit's solid, which is good; means we don't have to replace him... But he's not a top 4 defensemen come playoffs IMO

Willy dealt two incredible primary no-look assists and had a couple blocked shots. Over the losing streak he had a ton of shots and a handful of posts hit. Yet so many trying to make the narrative that he’s disappeared since re-signing work that they’re overlooking what’s actually happening.
Bertuzzi I also noticed a fair bit tonight on the forecheck and back check. He didn’t contribute a whole lot offensively but he was disrupting a lot of plays
Defence as a whole wasn’t great. Didn’t look at the stats but felt like a lot of high danger chances given up again. Definitely agree that JT, Brodie and Gio are all showing their age all year and I’m
not sure how far this team goes with those 3 continuing to play key roles.</div></div>
Problem is we need a D to bump them all down - but there really aren't any top pair D available. Hanifin and Chychrun are the closest in that they might be able to play as a #2 most of the time

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>In general if the leafs trade for any of these guys then extend them is it really an issue
Like Gio u paid for him then he extended with us and we got two more years out of him
Brad knows this to which is why he wont trade for anyone who does not have term or who he thinks he cannot extend
Tanev for instance I see extending, Same with Seeler and or Walker
Its not like Dubas who went in and got ROR and Acciari without a plan for extension. Now Brad did try and came close with ROR but he didnt want to be the 3c which is understandable
But yea I see Brad targeting either guys with term or guys he knows he can extend
He made an attempt with Zadorov + Tanev just was a matter of retention that killed it. Cause while getting those two would not have been cheap got a feeling both would have been extended by now
If Brad goes and spends for Seeler + Walker gets them extended then thats fine
As those two would help fix some issues with this Dcore
Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Walker
Seeler-Liligren</div></div>
I kinda disagree. To give up assets, in a "hope" of extending to me seems unwise. Those guys aren't getting eight years, so the all teams are really. on equal footing. So the Leafs would still have to give top dollar and term to extend them or sign them as UFA. I just prefer to go the UFA route.

Now before that I would make a trade to shore up this blue line and see how Keefe does
If its 4 wins or 3-2-1 in next 6 can argue not bad.
But if in these next 6 games they really **** the bag and Brad made a move got to consider moving on cause MLSE may force the issue and go get rid of him.
As in the end Keefe's not the main issue but hes up there in the top 3 rn
But still we missed our first chance to fire and upgrade dont do it again</div></div>
Shanny might not have a job in 2 years so I don't think Tre cares what Shanny has to say
