Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 3 - Winter Blues
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>There's a common adage in hockey....show me a good goalie and I'll show you a good coach.
Berube joined the Blues and Binnington goes on a massive hot streak. Binnington stops being a stud and the Blues/Berube look average at best
DeBoer and Vegas is a very different situation...I think, anyway. DeBoer was a specific guy Vegas wanted...he had beat up on Vegas as coach of the Sharks and, when he became available, they moved quickly to fire Gallant and bring him in.
I don't know if the leafs view any of the available candidates as "their guy"....but I'd much rather they figure out who that guy is and then act swiftly vs just <strong>firing Keefe because we're on a little losing streak</strong> and hire from an unimpressive group just for the sake of change.
Think about it...if they hire someone new now....he's going to get the rest of this year....all of next year for sure....and almost certainly the year after that. That's a min of 2.5yrs of this core's prime. So while I'm for a coaching change if it's specific...meaning they are certain they are hiring the guy they want....I'm completely against a coaching change if it's really just an experiment of hope that the next guy can do better.</div></div>
As someone who is not a Keefe guy I actually agree with not firing him in season.
This is a poorly constructed roster with some major holes to fix that can’t be accomplished till the offseason.
I would also let this season play out with Keefe and this roster and see how that plays out.
I see no other team that is searching for a HC “right now” so guys who are available today will be available in the offseason

Cant be defending Keefe when these last 3 games we saw the opposing team adjust on him and he got outcoached 3 times
Dont look at past seasons look at this season
Keefe is cooked
Like VGK and Gallant explore a firing into the sun
As Gallant took VGK to the SCF, and R3 the following season, and got fired his third year in January</div></div>
We are literally talking about the f*cking regular season.

Question for Habs Fans
For evans i would say the main thing they need back is a centre.
Doesnt have to be a good centre it can be a guy on the cusp who maybe just needs a reall opportunity to play more than 7-8 mins he has gotten so far.
Something in the vein (i know they are not a leaf) alex turcotte, rasmus kupari etc. A 22-23 centre who just isnt going to get that top 9 c chance on their current team.
That would be more desirable than say a 3rd rounder

Monahan : for any team, a first. For Toronto, a first and a prospect
Evans : for any team, a third and a fourth (but even then I don’t know if we trade him due to our lack of C and he is pretty much the perfect 4c). For Toronto, a second

Since extensions seem to be the hot topic on here at the moment, I want to point out that Brad is not scared to take calculated risks when it comes to extending young players. Look at the Rasmus Andersson contract for example. Knies is the hot topic here at the moment, but I don't think he's going to be a candidate for a long term extension simply because it will be robbing him of money. His team isn't going to bite on that kind of a deal. I could see a 3 - 4 year contract that buys up his remaining RFA years before a long term deal is put into place. It is a much better scenario for the player (barring a gross overpay).
Now, the one player I could see getting a long extension this offseason is Timothy Liljegren. Watch for him to get a 6 - 7 year deal Rasmus Andersson style.

Why would he sign that though? I am sure he sees himself as more than a depth forward and signing that term for that much is admitting you are only ever going to be a secondary player. I bet 8 years would have to come in above 6.5 for him to even consider it. And right now, he's not a 6.5 million dollar player.

Apparently the Leafs have shown interest in KHL free agent Maxim Tsyplakov, along with the Coyotes, Bruins, and the Red Wings. Super versatile winger with good number this season. Great skater and a guy who throws a lot of hits while also playing all situations. He's got a pretty big frame, this would be an excellent signing

Here's what I would do with Marner. Pounce on him early for an extension
If hes asking for Matthews money you go no
He asks for 12m give it to him
Dont argue dont question, just hand it over
That way its not like Willy who got 1.5m than what he was asking for in July

One reason the Leafs have be cap trouble for years is the lack good young players on ELCs playing above their contract.
Gee, the Leafs have just two this season on ELC, next season Cowan could another.
But take a look at what other teams are paying their stars, the Leafs aren't that unique
Sabres next season over 27m in three players
Sens will have five players at 41m and still miss the playoffs
Oilers over 30m in three players.
Most teams spend to the cap or very close to it. Yeah the Leafs haven't been as successful as some teams, but a lot better than some many that don't make the playoffs. Remember the Ferguson/Burke/Nonis era, spending to the cap and rarely making the playoffs.

Are we really expecting him to be putting up the numbers he’s putting up now when he’s 35?
I agree with Tre messing up with this deal. I’ve liked him for the most part so far but he messed up big time on this deal. I’m not even blaming Willy for not taking a pay cut. But this deal is not a team friendly contract.
See above for my note on the whole percentage thing
Ehhh at the time I did think it was a bad contract yes. If Willy can follow Pararin in terms of how he does then I think this contract will turn out fine. But there’s no guarantee that he will</div></div>
What do you mean stop with the cap% thing.
The entire cap is a %.
The face value of a contract is meaningless! Every contract is negotiated as a % of the cap, both relative to comparable contracts and also relative to league earnings. The % is literally all that matters

I feel like I need to put it out there so I don’t just seem like a Nylander hater: I’m still happy he’s sticking around. I’d way rather spend that money on him than the majority of other players in the NHL. But it’s really not debatable that this contract heavily favours the player over the team.

Hes competitive when he wants to be same for every guy here
We have seen the effort lack. TBL vs. TOR first time not great effort by him

In general Willy is playing for a contract. Its no secret hes going to play his best and maximize his earnings as contract fever is a thing.
And even still the terms floatlander and inconsistent Willy didnt just come out of no where. Through his career hes had games where hes been great and others where its 0 effort. Take games vs. non playoff teams big 4 barely show up lul. Hes not done so yet (for obvious reasons) but once he gets his money then were gonna see
Would not surprise me if the play drops as thats usually what happens to most these guys. They get their money than drop back to their average. r
Dont see his game better than this as this probs be the ceiling or that combined with contract fever. Either way he better pray next year he does the same and this aint a fluke as they gonna turn on him like they did Marner and it wont be pretty</div></div>
This is self justification again. He's gotten more consistent every season. He has been our best playoff performer often as well. He's evolved into this. The past is the past.

Just pls no Pasta money lul.</div></div>
The cap percentage is the number to look at. Not the cap total. He can get pasta money but it will be less of a percentage. This is not hard to understand, I don't get why so many people just refuse to even try to understand.

Treliving sucks
Treliving is far from perfect but neither was Dubas.
Klingberg F; terrible
Reaves E; Leafs needed physical presence but too much $ & term
Kampf C; slight overpay but excellent defensive cebter - off to a rough start but getting back & has track record
Domi B-; exactly as expected - very good offensively, nightmare defensively
Tre built an excellent d corps in Calgary; since he inherited an excellent forward corps - may be the perfect marriage.
I say he needs time - weird to me that you can so firmly close the book on him ~40% through his 1st season when Leafs are in relatively good position.

Gaudreau when he had 115 was offered 10.5m by CGY. Ended up with 9.75m in FA
For 2 more points would not be handing him Pasta money as to me this is contract year play.
10.5m x 8 years should be the max if he insists on 11.25m move on and try to go after someone like Guentzel or Reinhardt who should cost less.
Cause yea I doubt anyone throws 11m at him in FA and he would end up with less.
If he really wants to be here 10.5m x 8 years but I just got some bad feeling were gonna give him more than Pasta and increase the "how much they spending on 4 guys" meme going and if they dont have playoff success its really gonna get ugly
Cause yea if they do give it to him they have 24m to spend on 3 right handed Dman (including Lily's extension), a 3c, 2nd line LW, 2 4th liners, and a good backup goalie.
Thats gonna dissipate fast.</div></div>
Cap percentage is the number to look at, not cap number. Also Willy is just hands down better than Johnny Hockey.
