My ideal TDL
Can't imagine the General Managers around the NHL consider Kuznetsov a good center anymore. His numbers have tanked dramatically, worse than even Ovechkin. He's dead weight at this point, even if 50% retained. Might have to attach a pick to get rid of him at this point, and to a non competitor that will take on salary for picks.

(COL/WSH) - 2nd for Eller
This has been a weird deadline for a Caps fan, but I gotta sit back and applaud GMBM for his masterful dumping of these old expiring Vets while getting a very young top 4 Dman in the process. Bravo, Mr. GMBM.

One more move
Going to have to add another prospect and a high pick, also removing Eller and trading him elsewhere makes a lot more sense. A competing team like Minnesota will actually value him as a 3C and give a pick up for him. I suppose a third rounder, since Brown only fetched one second. Hagelin is a pure cap dump, a negative asset.

He definitely had a couple extra tricks up his sleeve I didn't expect. I think we're definitely a playoff team with Brown and Strome in the lineup. That third pair is a little shaky though, so makes sense to upgrade over Gustaffson by the deadline.
The Kuemper contract I think will definitely suck after a couple of years, but he was basically the only option (chance) the Caps had to get a legitimate goalie without giving up assets. Rather overpay with money a bit than give up picks and prospects.
My issue with GBMC has always been the same thing, he makes medium to small around the edges trades without going for any big swings. And these around the edges dudes are often old slow grizzled vets instead of giving our young guys a chance to play. Making modest moves isn't a terrible thing in and of itself if your team is solid, but the Caps haven't won a playoff round in over four years.
I am glad to see much more of a shakeup though this off season, he ended up really shaking the tree pretty hard after the dust had settled from free agency madness. I'm back on board and ready to rock and roll with my Caps into the playoffs. Let's go!

They should. That's two A prospects, plus a draft pick that's bound to be a third A prospect. Pretty good for a one year rental.

Nailed it
Have a three way battle for 2C or 3C between Protas, Lapierre and McMichael. Keep Eller. The only way the needle is moved is for a true top end 2C, and the Caps don't have the balls to do that.

Is that your predicted record in the title? That's 83 games. I'll go 43-29-10 for 96 points and wildcard #2 again, but this time the race is tighter and it comes down to the final stretch of games with the Blue Jackets nipping at our heels.

Yes you're right, I do remember that now. Lot of bad news this off season for the Caps. Good grief. Wilson ACL tear, Backstrom hip resurface, Alex shoulder surgery.

I'd absolutely have Snively in the mix for bottom 6 forward minutes, along with AJF. Is Alex Alexeyev injured or something? He should be getting that 3LD spot by now, he's 22 and picked same draft before Fehervary.

My thoughts
"and the long contract for Kuemper doesn't really matter as they truly will be horrible years 3-5 anyways."
Uh, well that means we have 2 seasons to win another cup or we are done for the foreseeable future. If what you say is true, these moves are not enough. What are we now? Maybe wildcard #2 again and first round bounce fodder?
Why not go for a big move, if we're still in win now. What's the point of doing these medium moves just to get bounced in round 1 again?

The cap hit scares me, the term scares me even more. He was not good in the playoffs, and the Caps defense isn't as good as the Avs. Not right now anyway.

With you. There is absolutely no ****ing reason in the world that Protas should not take nearly every second of ice time that Wilson is injured for. He's 6'6 225 pounds had a 54% CF in 33 games, got some PP time. What the hell else more does GMBM want to see? I really don't get this dude.

Signing Marcus Johansson is really something -___-
This Caps organization is so dangerously allergic on relying on their draft picks they'd rather sign an ancient rehash than play them. I would bet at least $5 that Protas would be far more valuable on the wing than Mojo. We needed a true 2 way center, not Mojo.

I just don't see any space for him. Protas can much better replicate the size, strength and physicality that we'd have with Wilson on the wing. I'd rather see Protas get ice time over an old rehash.

A J.T. Miller type might be what it takes just to get this team to the playoffs with Backstrom out the entire year and Wilson out half the year.

I would bet solid money on that, especially Sammy. Sammy was trash tbh, so much so that the Caps were fine letting a 25yo RFA first round pick walk for nothing.

Eh he had a bad playoff run, aside from team winning. Seems they won despite him. Plus he's 32 and has had injuries. If it was 4 years I'd be okay with it, but Kuemper had good leverage here, we were desperate and he was basically the only real option for us.

Need a third option: okay signing. He was the only option basically, but 1 year too long and slightly too much money.
Fucale is the better option for backup, cheaper than Vanecek and Sammy were going to be and performed better in a small sample size.

But 5.5 is still high, he's 32 and really wasn't very good in the playoffs. -4.3 GSAA, .902 SV%.
