2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #4: Deadline is Approaching
Trade Deadline Winners And Losers:
Winners:
Vegas - Traded for everyone lol,
Carolina - Got best player available without giving up premium assets, got a reclamtion project in Kuzy who might revive his career
Colorado - Solified their top 6 with Mitts, and added a solid defenseman in Walker, who plays their style and is probably a better fit than Byram for their playoff run for this year.
Philly - Stuck to the rebuild plan sold high on Walker and added another first. Gurianov was a sneaky add, fast and huge, could be a nice little project for Torts. EJ is a Vet, Flyers needed bodies on D with Seeler, Drysdale, Ristolainen injured. York being banged up and Walker traded. EJ is a body with a lot of experience should be a good fit for the room.
San Jose - They stuck to their rebuild, When Grier got there that team needed a tear down with the lack of prospects/picks, current depth, and age of the stars. And Grier has done that. This was the most amount of value he was gonna ever get for Hertl who wouldn't have played in a meaningful game with San Jose again anyway. He got 2 firsts, They have a good chance at Celebrini, a ton of cap space now. Also got good value on Duclair.
Losers:
Leafs - Didn't aim high enough, waste of a deadline. Another year wasted of Matthews and Marners career
Vancouver - Didn't do anything, Lindholm ehh. Lost out on Guentzel
Rags - Acuired mid players paid high prices
Calgary - Lost every trade 60-40
Dallas - Didn't do enough, still have Hakapaa and Suter on their top 6 d
Boston - Overpaid for Peeke who doesn't even play full time for CBJ, Ullmark deal fell through.

I know you can't win every game, but Im starting to feel like we just cannot beat the Bruins. They are the antithesis of the Leafs. They execute a very dangerous offensive system perfectly, have a bruting and defensively sound blue line, and two of the best goalies in the league. The Leafs are none of those things and it shows. Games like tonight should serve as excellent reminders that this team is a long way off from competing, and we really shouldn't buy a ton at the TDL. Maybe a move or two for guys that help now and later.
I dont want to make too much of a knee jerk reaction, but this game put all of our issues out on display.

So with the news that Murray is seeing pucks again, would we be comfortable with signing Murray to be Woll's backup next year for league min? Maybe have him start in the AHL in the Jones role?

Not true. His contract extension retroactively added a NTC to this year. (It's actually a full NMC, but for our purposes it's interchangeable)
I feel like people often forget that the term "contract extension" isn't just a random phrase we use

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsFanForSomeReason</b></div><div>Does anyone know - if a team acquires somebody who has performance bonuses on their deal, and that player has already met the conditions of the bonuses, is the team who signed him on the hook for that money next year or the acquiring team?
i.e. If the Leafs traded for Connor Brown, who after 10 GP with the Oilers secured his performance bonus of $3.225m which is to be tacked onto next years cap, does that count against the Leafs cap or the Oilers?</div></div>
It depends on the bonus and the contract. For typical ELC schedule A bonuses, some are hit for team-related stats (top-6 in points per game). As assuming the player plays the minimum amount of games with both team, that would count for the team that ended up with player. If it’s a counting stat…like most SPC or 35+ deal that include bonuses, such as number of games player, it depends on where the played was when they reached that number.
For example, I believe both Florida and Philadelphia booked bonuses by Owen Tippett the year he was traded

Just did a quick search since the game is about to come on.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>Performance bonuses count against the salary cap as soon as they are earned. If there’s cap space to absorb them, great, we never need speak of it again unless you’re a luxury car salesperson, and you have the player’s phone number.
If the end of year cap space isn’t enough to absorb the bonuses actually earned, then the excess is rolled into the next year and counts against the salary cap, eating into the space just like retained salary or an overpaid player in the press box does.</div>
https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/the-basics-on-nhl-contract-bonuses-maple-leafs-contract-slide-signing-bonus-performance-bonus/
If I remember later I'll look for something more official.
Basically performance bonuses are a running tally that accumulate as they are earned.
At the end of that season you subtract remaining cap space from that amount and the remainder is a carryover.
The team that is presumed to benefit from that player reaching a performance threshold, is the one to which the hit is applied.
Brown's performance bonus was for his first 10 games, and Edmonton was the beneficiary of those first 10 games, so they are responsible for that bonus.

It counts against the team the player was with when the bonus was earned.
As soon as Connor Brown played his 10th(?) game, his bonus was applied to Edmonton.
If he is traded to the Leafs, the bonus stays with Edmonton.

I’m absolutely down for flipping Domi, Bertuzzi, Brodie, Samsonov, Gio, Kämpf for actual hockey trades or using those assets for players that fit.

I’m not sure there is an argument someone could make for me not to believe this roster:
Knies - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson - Tavares - Marner
McMann - Holmberg - Järnkrok
Gregor - Kämpf - Steeves
Reilly - Liljegren
Benoit - McCabe
Gio - Timmins
As having the same impact as this current group. With how high prices are going right now for UFA’s, how can you not sell?
