I think you are mostly right. But one word….Lou.
Both are his draft picks and the type of player he likes. Wouldn’t be suprised at all if he was the one to bite on one of or both these two.
And to be honest, wouldnt be horrible for the Isles. Wood brings an “Islanders” style game and is low risk if you sign him for cheap. Blackwood is a decent backup who should be cheap, assuming you guys cant keep Varlomov.
But wouldnt blame anyone who thinks they arent worth the time of day.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tintin</b></div><div>In my mind the best idea is to just keep Nemec in the A as to slide his ELC for one more year.
Huge difference to pay Nemec 900k instead of 8-9m in the 26-27 when the Devils are right in the middle of their window of contention.
I'd go with Walsh as 3RHD for 23-24. He'll be 24 in October and has been fantastic in the Utica for a good while now. Walsh has earned the right to try and hold a spot in the NHL lineup down.</div></div>
Honest question, not disputing I just dont know. Is that how ELC works? I thought that once its signed any year counts whether its in the A or with the big club.

Good for him honestly. Now that he’s officially gone, it will be interesting to see the Devils plan. Do they get a vet to play for this year? Do they trust Nemec enough to have him and Hughes both in the lineup? We will see.

I mean hes an RFA so there isnt really any risk. Not like we are dumping salary or anything.
But very much a chuck in. I dont think his involvement has a big effect on this trade.
My hot take of the day, wherever he ends up, Blackwood will have a .910+ save percentage in 2023-24.

KEEP SEVERSON- RE EVALUATE 2024 YEAR 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheHowler</b></div><div>I commented on your other one too, but Dougie is straight up better than Severson. Dougie was a top 8-12 Dman this year. That trade would seriously hurt the devils long term.</div></div>
Haha not trying to spam you back just replying to the comment here. Zero hate by the way, sounds like we probably value these defensemen differently but thats fine. Discourse is cool.
Heres how I look at it. Severson’s game to me seems more graceful as he ages. He makes the dumb mistakes, but overall plays smooth on both sides of the puck. Dougie was great offensively, but his main weapon is his shot. His skating is already really really poor and I dont expect it to get better as he ages. Even if he still has the potential to score 15 goals, it is hard to justify paying a dman 9M if you have to shelter him offensively and lower his minutes.
I think that Luke, Nemec, and maybe eventually Casey bring a similar offense-first style as Dougie and will replace the goals we lose with him. Whereas Severson plays a better all around game.
Assuming both of them will be overpaid by the end of their respective contracts, I like Severson on a bottom pair at 5.5 a lot better than Dougie on a bottom pair at 9.

Keep Severson- Re evaluate 2024 Year 1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>There really is no logic saying "losing Severson for nothing". That's the nature of free agency. New Jersey signed Hamilton and Palat as UFAs....and their previous teams didn't worry about losing them, they just spend the cap allotted to those players on somebody else. Worse thing a GM can do in a cap league is overpay any players, and that's an overpay for Severson.</div></div>
Personally I feel like his market value is around 6M especially as this years top FA. NJ can offer him the extra year and maybe bring the salary down a bit. Honestly, in what is soon to be a $88M+ cap, I feel like Sevo at 5.5 or under is not bad value. Just my opinion though.

This would be the one year that he is a 3D. In reality, he probably ends up getting top 4 minutes like he did in playoffs anyway. In this model we move Dougie in 2024, and all of the sudden our right side of Sevo, Marino, Nemec makes a combined 10.5M in a $88M cap. That is good value.
Basically, I am valuing Sevo at 8x5.5 over Hamilton at 5x9.

I am not sure what we do. We either move up or select all those players. We have some good prospects but we don't have any great ones other than our main couple. I think the idea will be to try and find another Hintz or Robertson with those second rounders. Quite a few of these mid round picks have been looking pretty good for us but you can never have too much of a good thing.</div></div>
100%. I think it would be wise for Detroit to use as many of those picks as possible to draft. Think they will end up trading a couple but who knows. I do think Shango is the type who could end up scoring 30+ in Detroit but you never know until they are there.

That’s certainly fair. I think his true value is a 3rd. I just saw all those 2nds and was like, huh, why not? Haha. Which as dumb as it sounds seems to sometimes be the way NHL GMs operate. Doubt Detroit makes all of those first and second round picks.

Yep. Spent a bit of time on a line with Hughes but mostly 3rd line. Played a lot of PK when he was in. He got scratched a few games late in the season. Definitely a down season from his first two but hes a very serviceable 3rd line player at a minimum whose shot gives him top 6 potential.

Not all that impressed with UFA dmen. Kulikov played well in Lindys system a couple years back. Maybe could explore a trade but would have to be low value, dont feel like sending much the other way.
Good call on Foote. Was tinkering with putting him in anyways. Fine with him as a bottom line LW.

Definitely agree regarding Hughes and Walsh (or Nemec). In a perfect world we would have Sevo here for the next 2-3 years to bridge the gap perfectly. Unfortunately he is borderline the top FA this summer so that’s not gonna happen. We will have to make due with an imperfect situation and see what Reilly can bring.
Any ideas for a cheap vet to bring in and push? Either via free agency or a cheap trade option?

Certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world but the more I think about it the more Id really like to give Walsh a shot. Hes been good in the A, I think he plays a similar (just less experienced) game to Severson, and he’s comfortable with Bahl. Might make sense to have a veteran better than Smith around to push and compete for the job but wouldnt mind seeing Walsh get a run through TDL. If anything maybe it increases his trade value for when Nemec is ready to slide in.

Not totally opposed to that but would have to be a one year deal. Need some flexibility for offseason 2024 and I feel confident that Nemec will be ready for 24-25.
Just kind of realized that a lot of Devils fans (myself included) have pretty much skipped over Walsh at bottom pair RD. Hes been very good in Utica, he plays a similar style to Nemec where it should help when Nemec is ready to slide in (as opposed to a player like Holl who plays a totally different game) and he is comfortable with Bahl. Dont see Walsh in NJ’s long term plans but he can be a good stop gap and generate some trade value for when Nemec is ready.

That’s his qualifying offer. It’s what he will be signed to if he and NJD dont agree on an extension this summer.
Id definitely prefer to sign him longer term, as long as it is at or under $9M but just predicting that it wont happen.
If he takes the QO, Fitz will have to try and extend him during the season and/or trade him before the deadline.

I mean they would have to accept the deal assuming it is a second rounder, hoping it ends up being a first. Thats just the nature of how conditional picks work, you could say that for any conditional pick.
Obviously if they have a comparable offer where the pick is straight up a first rounder they should go with that. Just an idea for a potential first if the market ends up dry.
This year has been absolutely all over the place so a 1st or 2nd, a 3rd, plus 2 NHL pieces may be the best offer they get. They may also get 6 1sts a top prospect and a roster player. Its really all over right now lol.

Blues offer might be low. I'd center it around 23 1st and Sharangovich. Could work with prospects instead of or in addition to Walsh. But dont think I'd offer Holtz/Hughes/Nemec/Casey.
