A deal for Bert
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>I am skeptical about a GM giving up a 1st+an A prospect for Bertuzzi despite his skill set and even if he had similar results to last year. That being said if Larkin is signed for 9m+ and Bertuzzi is asking for 7m+ (not sure what he is asking), I would imagine that Yzerman just moves off of him. I think Bert would fetch a couple of second rounders+a B prospect or just an A prospect + a roster player. I think Dallas and Detroit will make a deal involving Gurianov+futures for Bertuzzi.</div></div>
Not delving into the value argument but do we have info from anyone other then Pagnotta about who is reportedly interested?
I don’t much value his supposed knowledge.

I think you overestimate the state of
1) teams able to pay Meier
2) teams with decently high picks in this draft that would move them for Meier
3) teams with the prospects to make the trade ala Detroit.
But to each their own. This exceeds what Grier is reportedly asking for as it includes both the prospects and a player.

I would take those 3 things for bert at this point. If it were last year it’s a different story but I am afraid that even though his reputation and ability is worth a lot the questions depreciate his value to about that.

Perron is already on a great contract before the retention. If you want David Perron for 2 years at less then 3m aav you are starting the conversation with a first. A late second and Yams isn’t very enticing

To the hagel comment: hagel had longer term and is somewhat better then kuba. I think this is fair value.

Trade deadline
I have certainly seen worse for bertuzzi but I don’t really think Yams fits the mould for what Steve is trying to build. Rarely does he like undersized forwards and Yams isn’t really all that productive.
I think we pump the breaks on bert speculation and see how he does over the next month. As it stands I think the most likely scenario is he signs a one year prove it deal to try and prove this is a fluke season and get his money bags - it’s unlikely he’ll get the term or aav he wants in free agency now.

I suppose we have the third retention spot but to me Erne is statistically a better forechecked/defender and has a better contract. Easier to move.

Tier 1) Perron? (Not a rental, retention available, 2 yrs, playoff guy gms love)
Tier 2) Maatta (extremely solid defensively, can play top4), Tyler Bertuzzi (would be tier 1 If he wasn’t injured so often this year. Great in your face guy who scores in the top six)
Depth) Erne, Sunny, Pius Suter, depth defensemen
What I fear most: Dylan larkin

Yeah, we’re definitely sellers. We aren’t going to be in contention for a playoff spot in 2 months. By then we will be double digits out

I think we (detroit) are at the point where we’d rather just keep Maatta for the rest of the year and take a swing at keeping him, if it’s just for a third. The guy is a rock defensively on a team that is really trying to improve in that regard.
If it’s a second he’s all yours.

moves to make
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DeadWingsv2</b></div><div>All jokes aside, Detroit has no reason to move Perron, so we're honestly not the best trade partner for Toronto's needs and cost. Realistically for Detroit to move Perron somebody would have to overpay by a lot, so you're really not off on cost, I just don't think it would be a great idea from the Toronto perspective to do it, while it doesn't make sense for Detroit to do it for reasonable cost.</div></div>
To be honest our reason for cycling Perron should be that he’s 34, if the value is there. Take out voit and I still probably would consider this trade.
We aren’t a bubble Team this year in this division. Maybe next year. We need to keep building the foundations for the future with assets who won’t be here when we’re good. Perron fits that, so if someone is tossing a 1st and second our way, I’m hitting the sell button.

Yzerman will trade any non core asset he can if he thinks it will improve the team. Do not presume that a 34 year old is untouchable when he can bring back significant future value.
It would cost more then a first - I literally say that in the original post that it would probably cost more. The first of course being the basis. And several posters have suggested toffoli esque packages that work well.

Deadline day - proven playoff performer with term
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>He's a 55-60 point winger that turns 35 in May. He's not worth a team's top two prospects *and* a 1st - you're literally asking for a bigger package than young RFA wingers like Fiala & Debrincat got. The Tyler Toffoli trade is probably the best comp for a Perron trade - Calgary gave up a 1st, a solid prospect (Emil Heineman), and a couple of lower picks to get Toffoli, and sent Tyler Pitlick's expiring deal to offset some costs. OP's offer is light, but I think a 1st/3rd/Niemela would get Perron with retention, or you could swap that 3rd out for a worse pick and send back a contract (Pierre Engvall?) - but anything beyond that is too much for Toronto to pay.</div></div>
This though. I agree the toffoli trade is probably the best mode to go by. I didn’t expect the idea of retaining on a trade Perron to be so controversial though... he’s a 34/35 year old guy, we aren’t going to be good next year either (maybe a bubble team) and we need to keep building the foundation for the future.
1st/3rd/niemela would be enough for me tbh. Niemela is a decent fit - we might have Hronek and Seider but after that there’s nothing prospect wise on the right side unless you count wallinder who plays both.

So you wanna waste the third retention slot on a mid round pick instead of facilitating more?
You retain on the more valuable trade instead of the 3rd goalie that will get you a 4th at best.

And Detroit needed a LD and took Leddy and was willing to eat on Panik and the retention was small not what we would retain on a far better David Perron.</div></div>
Which is why he would return a first plus... I don’t understand why this is a hard concept. Retention = added value to the trade. Added value to the trade means more futures. This trade is because Perron is good, has playoff experience, and will be a valuable contributor to a team in the playoff hunt for this and next year. That makes him very valuable...
If Steve gets the right value he’ll do just about anything. You’re artificially placing restrictions

1) why would he bother to put himself into a box? We know yzerman will trade if the value is there. Also, he has retained on a player for multiple years before, see Panik.
2) not every deadline trade is a ufa trade. See toffoli, hagel, etc.
3) very few of those UFAs are going to net good returns. Maybe bertuzzi if he figures it out and I really hope we aren’t moving Larks.

I don’t think he gets that return given Vancouver is desperate for his 6.6m cap, and he’s kind of in the doghouse.
I would look to the Bjorkstrand or patchioretty trades instead as a guideline - and those two players have significantly less risk associated with them.

Steve doesn’t tend to like many undersized guys, and Rasmussen is a proven nhler that contributes to our lineup at 3C while Robertson still can’t seem to stick even with a massive glaring hole at left wing and elite talent to play with.
So I don’t think so.

Mutual benefit
Now, I noticed that the stars have had khudobin buried and have a 2 million penalty. Given that he is buried in the ahl for 11 games now I assume it’s because he has fallen lower on the depth chart.
With news that the stars want a top six forward, or maybe want to make other moves, they could certainly use that cap freed.
Normally it might take more then a third to free up ~2m+ of cap. However, as it happens, Detroit could use an ahl goalie who could stop a puck.
Dallas gets cap room, wings get a mid round pick next draft and a goalie to try and fix the griffins.
Obviously doesn’t work if Khudobin is just on an extended conditioning stint or something.

I think Bertuzzi could be a really good piece for the devils to add at deadline to make a push - they don't seem to need much else except maybe a nice, gritty, goal scoring winger for playoff time.
I really like wallinder too, but I'm not sure that New Jersey would be ready to move holtz unless they really really smelled the cup and thought bert was the last piece.
Also I don't think that package gets you Bo

Now I will preface this by saying that I don't watch a ton of the canes games, but the ones I do, they come across as volume shooters.
Maybe it is time to acquire someone with a really good shot and rely on quality over quantity? I know you got andrei but more then one quality shooter can't hurt.
Like I consistently see 30+ shot games with a shutout or 1 goal for.
