2022-2023 Offseason Thread
I am in the minority here (after reading some Caps fans posts), but I don't mind the Edmundson trade. 50% retained for a physical defender who clears the front of the net, which was a MAJOR issue second half of last year. Plus, AA has been somewhat injury prone (unfortunately) so having a vet option who can eat minutes and throw his body around - don't mind it.
I am more "critical" of the Patches signing. He is 35, hasn't really played in 2 seasons, coming back from double achilles surgeries, and goes directly against our offseason objective at getting younger. I totally get that he scores goals and that is a major need for the Caps (obviously). But again, he has played only 44 games in the last 2 seasons and won't be ready by start of season...And we spend 2m (PLUS 2m more if he plays 20 games)...
To me, that is just a little expensive. But I guess a) what else could the Caps do - nothing and b) low-ish risk/high reward (even though low risk is more medium because a) it takes away from youth time and b) would take up $2m if he under performs)
But - fingers crossed for healthy!

Decent start to the WPG rebuild. I doubt the 2024 WAS pick will be top 10, but as long as it's an unprotected 1st, then deal.

trust me i like ehlers just as i liked vrana and i think he would be a good pickup
its funny to me though to see wpg fans claim that there's no way he's moved unless they get 8oa or multiple firsts or whatever when at every point the org has acted like he is not worth it and it reminds me a lot of how caps fans treated vrana while he was here.

I am a big fan of Bertuzzi. I think he would fit in so well with the Caps

WPG is on the fence with this one. Assets and picks are okay. The 2024 pick is the big component here. Maybe.
IF you said... WAS #8 pick in this upcoming draft, I would say DEAL!

Counter: wait for the jets to move other pieces and try again later. The direction the jets are going is up in the air so before we all assume a rebuild let's wait and see what happens come the draft

We don't want your cap dump in Matt Murray and the caps aren't moving Wilson or Oshie. You want Wilson? Start with Knies. You want Oshie? That sucks, he's not moving.

Caps would pass. I am not sure if they would trade Wilson for Nylander 1 for 1 (whether they should is another conversation).
Caps will already be tight against the cap and while Osh is declining Murray is useless and costs more.
Would love to trade for Nylander but cant see Wilson being part of the deal.

In that case, I’d be watching every 3rd line in the playoffs and targeting any UFA next year. Amadio and Carrier come to mind. Vegas probably will have a hard time paying them what they deserve. If you have 5 mill on cap space, you should easily lure them. They both make just over 1m iirc

How many cups do you have in your lifetime as a fan? If my calculations are correct I believe the guys you’re laughing at about missing the playoffs have 1. Very recently. I don’t go out of my way to defend our rival’s fan base, but man are you brutal.

Three series wins in your entire franchise history. I can count them on one hand. How many cups do the jets have? ;)

Lol yes do it this year… the deepest draft in YEARS instead of next year where the talent pool is much less and the Capitals will have a new coach and a better team. Great logic.

It’ll be real funny when the jets implode this off-season after they got absolutely curb stomped in round 1 this year and continue to have no success while the caps end up back in the playoffs after only missing twice in the last 15 seasons.
And for the record, ehlers isn’t even returning what’s proposed here. Be ready to be disappointed, although jets fans are used to that!

Not sure if you meant a young player from the Flyers specifically or not but if you did the Flyers aren't interested in moving any of their guys like that (Frost, Tippett, Cates, York)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BrodeurBro30</b></div><div>I've seen Caps ACGMS offering Bratt for WSH 1st and Lapierre. Lapierre is not even a blue chipper (He is a B grade prospect, a much lower ceiling than Faber). I will stand by my earlier valuation. An Ovi - Strome - Bratt line puts the Caps back in the playoffs. Sharangovich is a good Top 9 add who was one season removed from 24 goals. You dump Mantha, add a top line winger, and a Top 9 winger. This is good business.</div></div>
Caps say no

Schmaltz could easily be a ppg player if he wasn't on the coyotes. And he has a solid cap hit and term left so the 1st seems reasonable. Maybe you don't need to include Lapierrez but he's not going to be a stud. Barabonov is worth essentially a high 2nd

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RMNB</b></div><div>I wouldnt imagine Carlson has too much value around the league. He has been a defensive liability for the last couple seasons but that could have something to do with lingering injuries. I don't see any scenario where the caps look to move him as he is apart of their core they will ride into the sunset with and their entire season fell apart after he got injured. His age, injury issues, cap hit, and defensive issues all combined together probably lowers his value more than you would think. He wont get traded any way unless it turns into a complete yard sale.</div></div>
Carlson is too important to trade. He is still great offensively and better defensively than most caps fans think (myself included).
He also prolly does not have massive trade value and there is no reason to trade him for a poor return. Caps need him if they hope to make another run

We definitely need a top 6 scoring winger. Hopefully one of the names you mentioned
