Kassian will end up dead cap, whether it is via retained salary or buyout.
My thought process is more specific to Katz wallet, a 50% retained transaction like I laid out costs him $2.9m across the two seasons of his contract. Whereas a buyout costs him $3.8m across 4 seasons.

RFA does not mean a player will be back, the contract ask for Deangelo isn't going to be anywhere near the $1M deal he was just on.
If they cannot come to terms after arbitration then he becomes a UFA

They need a tandem goalie to work with Skinner (assuming reports of Smith LTIR are true), Holtby is my choice I thought he played well in Dallas after a terrible stint in Van.
I don't love the UFA market Keumper will be too pricey, MAF isn't signing in EDM, Campbell is not reliable and Husso is way too risky imo.

My guess for an Anderson to EDM deal to occur would require the Habs to take back some salary.

Kuemper's only real concern for me is his injury history but overall I think he would add major stability to the position.
The difference in Yam & JP's deals comes down to two factors: 1) contract length as you noted & 2) the playoff run seemed to benefit Yams value / role on the team.

EDM has been running 11/7 under Woodcroft & Manson, I dont think that will change with Broberg coming into the mix.
The trade is not as simple as Soucy for a 1st, Keith has negative value to the deal.

Keith has lost a step or two and EDM has Broberg waiting to play, Soucy adds another dimension with his toughness (something EDM really lacks).
Yes the cost is high, however a 28th Overall is not going to be the difference between EDM winning the cup and not.
So really while EDM is in win now mode they need to reconfigure the Dcore for what wins in the playoffs

What to do
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>I'm not sold on the goaltending tandem either, but I could see Holland going with it. Skinner has been pretty good and he has a history of elevating his game in the playoffs.
Kulak has been fine in a 3rs pairing role, I don't have a problem bringing him back but only if Keith is moved as there's no cap space either. I don't like some of the Kulak contracts I'm seeing on this board either, so that's why I steered away on this AGM.
McLeod has been very good, especially vs Colorado. I agree he should move up, but Nuge has been hit-and -miss as a winger and I'd rather have McLeod as a pivot, so I placed them this way.
Part of the reason I put this together was to show that Barrie & Foegele are not necessarily cap casualties this summer. Many Oilers fans have convinced themselves that these guys HAVE to go this summer and are using that line of thinking to justify giving them away for nothing. I wanted to show that that's absolutely not true and IF they're moved it'll be for FMV as Holland has the option of keeping both.
And the Soucy deal has the effect of reformatting the defense corps. This is a far greater change in composition than adding Kulak/deleting Barrie would.</div></div>
Agreed,
They will give Skinner some road and hopefully he is ready for full time NHL duty
The upper contract limit in my eyes for Kulak is $3M x 3yrs, would rather a $2.5M x 2-3yrs however UFA is silly season
RNH outside of the the Yam call-up stretch has been more miss than hit as a winger for sure which is too bad because I love Mcloed's speed and defensive capabilities in that 3 spot.
Barrie IF traded should net them a healthy return, have maintained this all year. I do truly see him being dealt but for a good return.
Foegele I'm not sure about, the chatter was him being shopped at the deadline. I'm guessing he goes for a roster player with less cap hit

Ya I said it last summer, that deal is an overpay (yes it looks worse right now due to the injury and how its effecting his play). They definitely couldn't afford to lose him but also they need that $2M overpay to go elsewhere.
Dallas - Klingberg walks they'll look for a replacement
Arizona - Helps them get to the Cap Floor + picks, could remove Boyd from the equation
Seattle - Fair, I wonder if they try using their cap space to get picks as AZ and others have done in the past.

What to do
Couple Things:
I'd like to see a change in Goal for EDM, Smith & Skinner doesn't seem like a tandem that will get you through 82 games plus playoffs.
If there was a way to keep Kulak around, he has been better than expected since his arrival.
I like the 1 year bridges for Yam & JP
I like the 3 centers however I wonder if Nuge should slide to LW and have Mcloed as the 3C. He has taken big steps these playoffs
Barrie will be a cap casualty this summer imo, EDM needs a new composition of defenseman and Barrie + Keith are not who I would be building around.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nhl_oilers</b></div><div>Even though I don’t want this to happen, I feel like Holland will trade Puljujarvi and sign Kane. I don’t mind bringing Kane back, but I don’t want to trade Puljujarvi. I hope I’m wrong, but I just have a feeling he will do that. Smith can still retire, and he may. A younger goalie being the starter would be very good, and I would hate for Smith to get hurt again half way through the season. Campbell I don’t trust to play well come playoff time, even though he played well last season in the playoffs for Toronto. I would rather go after someone else honestly. I also see Toronto trying their hardest do give him an extension. We don’t need a third pair LHD, as one of Kulak, Keith, Broberg, or Niemalinen will be playing there.</div></div>
I do not believe those two things are mutually exclusive, EDM can resign both Kane & JP.
What are you referring to with the 3rd pair LHD? Do you not think Kulak will be resigned?

Smith has been decent thus far but they need someone more dependable. Keith needs to retire and they can sink that money into Campbell and flip Foegle and sign a cheap bottom pairing LD.</div></div>
The Yam & JP extensions are based on Jordan Kyrou's extension in STL. On a 1 year deal the AAV could be lower but anything 3 years and up the AAV climbs as they will be eating up UFA years.
Smith has a contract and Holland isn't going to trade him, he forfiets his money if he retires so I doubt that happens also.
Same thing for Keith, I highly doubt he retires and Holland doesn't have the stones to trade him (as you'd be attaching assets in order to move him)

I think you are missing the point of this hypothetical. The title of this AGM is "IF Smith and Keith go LTIR" so it would be rather misleading if the AGM didn't see them on LTIR.
Now had I called the AGM "Unlikely but Possible" you may have a point.

IF Retiring after a deep run
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xspyrit</b></div><div>That would really be a bad trade for Ottawa
They need a rock solid RD to play with Chabot, not a Barrie type. Like a Methot for Karlsson
Hamonic is a stop gap (Zaitsev too but Hamonic is better)
Chabot - RD
Sanderson - Zub
Brannstrom - Holden/Thomson/JBD
Does Keith has a legit skin condition though?
LTIR is not a decision, it happens or it doesn't</div></div>
First thing, it wouldn't be a "really bad trade" for OTT as it's been discussed in other comments Barrie isn't coming in to be a top pair player. He would be coming in to assist the PP, which is his single biggest attribute and to play soft 3rd pair minutes.
As an aside to the Barrie to OTT trade, one thing is OTT is not a destination much like EDM is not a destination. It is unfortunate, trust me as an Oilers fan I know all too well, that in order to get players the team has to trade for guys with term. As a bottom 3rd team in the league with spending problems don't expect a big UFA splash.
Keith doesn't have Eczema but what he did have was a bad concussion this season in addition to a upper body injury (likely shoulder) that kept him out of the line up.
What are you inferring that LTIR is not a decision? Do you think Keith would sit out the season if he were able to play? No he has a contract so if he is no longer able to play he will go LTIR rather than retirement

May I remind you that Marian Hossa was moved to LTIR due to Eczema ....
Mike Smith has battled nagging injuries all season that wouldn't surprise anyone if they kept him out again
Duncan Keith suffered an ugly concussion this season as well as an upper body injury that kept him out of the lineup.
So while they may be hyper competitive this hypothetical scenario doesn't involve them playing in fact in is about them essentially retiring but still collecting pay-cheques
