Thread: Minor moves but Opportunities for a Mashup of Players

So let's fast forward 3 years and here's what I see

Kubalik - Dach - Kane
Debrincat - Strome - Reichel
Suter (Kurashev) - Toews - Nylander (multiple free agents)
Hagel - Kampf - Highmore

(Owen Power, Edvinsson or Lambos...all first line potential) - Mitchell
Carlsson (Kalynuk) - Boqvist
Keith (Beaudin or Vlassic) - Regula

Goalie
Lakinen, Subban, Delia or acquiring a veteran starter
Backup = Drew C

The point is, there are multiple ways this can work out and understanding Toews will likely be a 3C and Keith a bottom pairing in 3 years and Seabs gone. Reichel and Mitchell are probably the players with the most unknowns that they need to fullfill their expectations. If those two don't, it might be problematic but if they do then things will fall into place. Dach has already proven he has the tools to be a 1C. Strome is only 23 still and plenty of upside. Cat and Kubalik already have proven what they bring in top 6 roles. Kane is Kane still in 3 years. 3rd line guys are the easiest to acquire if none of Suter, Kurashev, Barratt, Nylander work out which is highly unlikely as 1 if not 2 will make it on the 3rd line. The best part is, they are going to have more cap space to work with in 3 seasons so plenty of options. These guys, not this season, but next season and the season after may squeeze into the playoffs but in 3 and 4 years they have a shot to contend.

That all said, many Hawks fans are spoiled by being a dominating franchise for 10 years so recently that they forget how rare Stanley Cups are. I've been a diehard fan since 1990 and after 30 years, 3 cups is even a lot for most teams. The goal is for these guys to make the playoffs in 3 years and get through a round or two, if they can do that then anything happens as the Stanley Cup is the most unpredictable year to year of any of the major team sports.

If you weren't an idiot, you'd know that Edmonton failed at rebuilding even with countless 1st overall picks. Bad drafting, bad player development, and bad trades.

Kings are an example on how a good rebuild is done. Good drafting, good player development, and good trades.

Does this team I've made look like a rebuilding team?

My point is, the Blackhawks have already gotten a lot of really good young players. Dach, Kubalik, DeBrincat, Strome, Boqvist, and Mitchell. With a couple FA signings and trades they could have been a contender again. A rebuild now makes no sense to me.

As far Tuch goes in the Vegas trade, for all his hype and skills which flash on ice plus his reasonable contract (Stan loves cost certainty), he's 23 with 3 full NHL seasons now. He seems to be about a half point per game player and reached 20 goals once. His relative Corsi and Fenwick were negative last season, and his PDO was sub 100 despite a 60% offensive zone start. These numbers aren't the be all/end all except I'd rather see better numbers without watching a lot of VGK games other than the playoff series. I do like Tuch too and he had some great shifts against the Blackhawks that are fresh in my mind. If the Blackhawks were trading Kane, there's a chance that this is who Tuch is, a half point per game player for whom production doesn't quite meet skills/expectations. He could also blow up for 35 goals next season so there is a risk/reward to his value for me</div></div>

Tuch in playoffs, that’s the biggest thing that sticks out to me with him. Not to mention a sweetheart deal if he breaks out.

Oh I agree I don't think they are better. But the point being they are probably that in 2 years or so. Otherwise I think you're looking at this team in two years and wonder why you gave up draft picks or capital (or not accumulating it, which really should be viewed as the exact same thing - staying put is as much of a decision as trying to renew). I don't think Alzner will be good, but I also don't think Chicago should try to be before their roster is flowing with more talent. You don't have to agree with me though!

Thread: Get Younger
This is just bad and none of it helps the hawks.

Arizona trade - Do not want ELO, that contract is going to be bad in a few years and Teows is worth more to the Hawks.

Toronto trade - no chance in hell. Johnsson is close to cap dump. His advanced stats away from Matthews are plain bad. Next to Matthews and Marner, two elite players and he's only on pace for 15 goals; sorry but there are plenty of players in the league that can do that and don't cost $3.4M. Johnsson on his best day is worth a 3rd. Murphy is worth a 1st. Way off here.

San Jose trade - value is okay but we don't have a need for Merkley. Hawks have Boqvist, Mitchell, Regula all as prospects and Boqvist and Mitchell are better, Regula very close to Merkley. Not to mention Murphy and Seabs. The only defense we need is a #1 LHD otherwise we have an absolute logjam of players and prospects.

Pitt trade - Murray is not worth a 2nd and Kampf. Kampf is a defensive stud on the 4th line, awesome PK player and cheap, we aren't giving him up. We just offered Crow $3.5M and he will likely take that for 2 years. He's better then Murray. We need a young goalie behind Crow not someone who wants a starting job and costs $4.5M.

WPG trade - Caggs and Koekko are both worth a 4th rounder maybe a 3rd for one of them. 1st is way too much.

every hawks fan that didn't just hop on the bandwagon in 2010-2015 would know that this is both not realistic and not what the team should do. 1. We aren't trading Toews. 2. Kubalik and Strome will both make like half of what they are making here and it will be short term deals. 3. Hawks don't want Matt Murray. Crawford is much better and can be signed for cheaper. We don't need to find the answer I net for the next decade today. The trades are awful. Murphy is worth a 1st and Johnson is a cap dump to start. No one is taking Seabrook and hawks fans know this, and Ottawa definitely won't take him for that return. Caggiula and Koekkoek are worth 4th round picks maybe. No where near a 1st. Finally, OEL's contract is awful. Hawks don't want him nor could we afford him in a realistic situation anyways.

Not sure why I even took the time to type that out, because this post really isn't worth it.

Let's explore that KHL transition too! Ilya Sorokin drafted in the 3rd round 2014...again another 3rd rounder and 6 years later it looks like he's going to get his 1st NHL game. Igor Shesterkin drafted in the 4th round of 2014...again 4th rounder and 5 years later he got his chance. He did play a few games last year.

Again, nothing against Askarov or his play. He looks solid. If the Hawks drafted him I wouldn't be upset. I do think there are WAY too many 3rd and 2nd rounder starting goalies in the NHL...and 1st round goalie busts in the NHL...to use a top 10 pick on a goalie. I keep piling up evidence piece after piece and the response is...this guy's different. OK, maybe true. Maybe not. we don't have a crystal ball.

***EDIT*** I know this opinion is NOT in the majority. But if Askarov is such a lock @ #9 that everyone says I'm crazy....then maybe I need another 2nd rounder? If he's THAT good...I should be asking for more. I know that's not what <a href="/users/csick" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@csick</a> wants though.

My opinion of Bowman is he's made a lot of mistakes, some good moves, well above average at drafting players, and overall a top 10 GM in the NHL-probably more because a lot of them are just worse rather than Bowman being great. If he is fired, fine, but I'm not fully convinced that a new GM will automatically be better.</div></div>

I think Bowman gets a very bad rap on here. By no means is he perfect. I would say this in his defense (which I feel I need to remind people a bunch) Name 1 GM in the entire NHL that's done a better job at importing players into the NHL. Also, he hasn't had a ton of draft picks to work with, but has done a pretty darn good job. Trading away picks @ the TDL is part of the reason they won 3 cups. Just about every other GM that's going to get highly ranked...has flaws that are similar to Bowmans too. Not too many GMs can say they've never overpaid their own players. That's a routine thing that unfortunately happens.

So I agree with the second part of this. Crosby is indeed a generational talent. But THAT'S the reason the keep making the playoffs. Nothing else. He has literally made careers out of guys like rust and Simon. Neither of them had any business being on the top pair except Crosby was just THAT GOOD. An argument could be made for Horny too. Go look at JRs trade is the last 3 years. I'd argue his trade history is the worst in the entire NHL over that period.

We complain about Joki/Nylander, but Kessel was literally an 92 / 82 point player in that system and brought in Galy. Like.....I'm kinda sure that belongs in a historically bad all time all sports kind of trade. Kessel in AZ is a completely different situation.

***EDIT*** it's the same reason Chia destroyed EDMs organization, but Holland comes in and looks like they're going to be just fine. JUST DONT MESS IT UP!

Blowing it up in a rebuild comes with the high risk of needing to nail the prospects and picks. Not every top draft pick becomes a top 5 scorer or Norris trophy winner.</div></div>

I like your idea and I would love it if they could pull that off with a new GM and coach. Honestly, the biggest priority for me would be to get a lot more speed and youth in the team. There’s almost no pace up and down the line up. That will seemingly take time though. Besides the young dmen in the team, I honestly can’t think of any fast forward prospects besides kurashev. In this year’s draft, I’d really like to see them focus on taking some great skaters.
