Opening Night
How is Holtz defensively? I think if he can be schooled up to the Bruins defensive structure, this is a solid deal. Is a low 1st rounder from a different team all that better than a post hype sleeper like this? Ully is not going to get us a 1C so this might be the B's best deal.

I mean Karlsson (31) at 3 x 5.9mm or Lindholm (29) at 7x7mm? 7x8mm? I know Lindholm had a down year which lowers his cost but the lack of quality centers will get him paid nonetheless. I like the shorter deal here so I think Karlsson would be sweet. Now would Vegas get a better offer than that? Almost certainly.

There was an article today discussing how LA could buy out PLD and get out of much of the contract without destroying their cap. If you want to roll the dice on him, prob better to wait for that and sign him to a prove it deal.

Are we sure that Elias is a big enough upgrade over Coyle to commit to him until he's 36? I think if you can get Guentzel to commit to that contract, you do it for sure.

4 mil x 3 for a washed OEL which then blocks Lorhei? More money to Sway than Sorokin just got?

Familiar Trade Bait and Unfamiliar Targets
The Bruins will want Lorhei in a prime spot next year and Wotherspoon has been a revelation. I really can't see the pick deprived B's giving up a 1st rounder for Provorov. They may also be kicking the tires on Hanfin.

Signing Hanifin in Free Agency
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>Defense seems to be the teams calling card. I’d rather have a Noah Hanifan than Matt Grz AND Derek Forbort. Go with younger options at the LD and RD on the third line</div></div>
I agree with next year for sure but are you ok with it in 3-5 years when Lindholm and Hanifin are low to mid 30's and not worth their contracts?

Signing Hanifin in Free Agency
Wouldn't this be 30% plus of the salary cap spent on the Bruins top 4 defense? Many of those locked in for a long time. I'm actually a little skeptical that Sweeney wants to forfeit so much flexibility. The Bruins commonly find good, cheap defensemen that work in the Bruins system. Seems easier to exploit that in todays NHL than find reliable middle six scoring, the real bugaboo of this team for the last 10 years...

Thanks for the clarification! Couldn't find anywhere that explained this.

I think they can't trade the 2025 first round pick as well because of the 2024 pick is protected?

3 Team EDM and NJ
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SupremeBone</b></div><div>EDM gives up way too much for yet another middling G that would get lit up behind this team and a one-dimensional top-6 W while really not solving any of the team's biggest problems (team defense & a reliable, long-term G). And they do it while giving up their 1st this year. That's not a well thought-out trade.</div></div>
Jake Debrusk is a top 4 PK on the #1 PK team (by far) in the NHL this year. Rip him about his streaky scoring all you want but he is hardly a 1 dimensional player.
I agree with the sentiment, this is a sell trade for the B's and there is no reason to think they'll be in that mindset this year.

Run it back v4
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>My expectation is that they keep Ullmark until his contract is up, but he transitions from 1A to 1B. Stuart Skinner has actually been worse than Jack Campbell, but he makes less. The only saving grace is you can bury him and save a few hundred k when you bring Bussi up.
If Boston is out of it at the trade deadline, then I could see this. Instead I expect this type of package for Connor Hart</div></div>
The problem with keeping Ullmark through next year is you'll have his 5 million plus whatever Swayman demands which is a LOT of cap money tied up in goaltending. In a supposed big year for the B's to go find a true #1 C, that's a liability isn't it?

If this was an unprotected top 10, Sweeney would have to be intrigued. The Bruins schedule calls for some future regression. A possible top half of the draft first rounder, some cap flexibility and a solid backup (esp with the Bruins d structure)... Of course, the Bruins fan base would riot and it wouldn't be popular in the locker room either. But in the offseason with a long term extension for Swayman on the docket, Ullmark will be going to the highest bidder and that won't be NEAR this price.

Not happening but if it did
The other problem on Boston's side is Swayman's pending long term contract will put a ton of cap into the goalie position for a very long time. Not a great way to build a team. It would be super interesting to see if the Bruins defensive structure could rebuild Campbell's value.
