Do these bad contract swaps make sense
You just made Schmaltz worth 8.35M over 6 years for Buffalo.. so Buffalo gets the worse player and pays more.. Somehow I doubt they’d say yes to that.

Nemeth will fetch a much higher return at the deadline. Big, Responsible, Physical defensemen who can kill penalties are coveted come playoff time.
I would expect to see a 2nd round pick return similar to what Andy Greene got last year.

Detroit has no need for more RHD and we'd get more for Nemeth at the deadline anyways. Going to need more.

I think Buffalo is more likely to hope for a rebound season out of Skinner than sign Hoffman - and I don’t think he’d sign that anyways. Last I heard he’s looking for term

The Buffalo side of my trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shootica</b></div><div>I like the fact that you laid out the other side of your deal. I think this makes it a lot more clear why Sabres fans are turning this down.
Both those players are/were close to being good adds for us, so I like the thought process, but it just doesn't come together for me. Kerfoot would have been a good addition over the summer, but we signed Eakin to fill that 3C hole so the need for Kerfoot has pretty much vanished. With Dermott, we definitely have a hole at LD. But what we really need is a second pairing LD, and I don't think Dermott has proven capable of that role. He's not a strong enough player to justify sitting Risto for him, and the same can be said for the rest of our RHD. I'd rather play one on their off side than sit one for Dermott.
Hope that makes sense.</div></div>
We also dont have enough cap space to even have a 22 man roster and that's before establishing bonus overages from last year and there's no cozens here. Also, as much as I dislike ristolainen, its laughable that he would sit. Also Hutton starting?

<a href="/users/dzmets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@dzmets</a>
Skinner, Jeff $9,000,000 >= Pacioretty, Max $7,000,000
Hutton, Carter $2,750,000 < Fleury, Marc-André $7,000,000
Staal, Eric $3,500,000 > Martinez, Alec $4,000,000
$15,250,000 << $18,000,000
Pacioretty is very good and with Jack may also get his 40 goals.
So that part works IMO
I may want Fleury as I understand he is a VERY GOOD locker room guy.
His salary scares the heck out of me.
HIs $7,000,000 and Okposo's $6,000,000 for a back up GK and 4th line player for the next two years is a problem.
Martinez solves Buffalo's problem at LHD but brings a hole at #2 C
I would live with Montour (5 goals,18pts and +13; 2nd 3rd and 1st among the defensemen) playing the off side and keep Staal.
Over all the value is close but Buffalo definitely would NOT be adding to the trade.
IMO Vegas is getting the better players and shedding nearly $3,000,000 of cap space.
This is an easy no from Buffalo.

Potential Lines
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shootica</b></div><div>I agree, I know it's a small sample size. I definitely see Tage on the top line as much more of a 'would be nice' than a guarantee. But I think it's within the realm of possibility.
I'd imagine gerowrj16 has a similar thought. That's why he's called this 'potential lines' instead of 'opening night projection'.</div></div>
Here’s my thing with Tage:
Sure, he’s looked good in 2 very small sample sizes of AHL play
But we saw how utterly horrible he was with the Sabres for like 3/4 of a season
Of course he could’ve gotten better....
but when it comes to him, I’ve gotta see it before I’ll believe it

As good as anyone could guess.
Who knows what Krueger will do.
Remember Sobotka on the second line last year.
Maybe he will try to turn Hall into a PK specialist! :laugh

It is nice seeing a pleasant conversation between two level headed knowledgeable Sabre fans.
I call you both knowledgeable as I nearly always agree with your points of view. :laugh
Actually Tage has played in 27 games in Rochester and has 14 goals and 23 points.
He was also the best Buffalo player in the last prospect challenge last year.
If he has spent the last year bulking up, I could see him picking up garbage goals in front of the net.
Regardless, none of us watch as much hockey as a scout does, so we are mere armatures.
I think we can all agree that jack, Tylor, Sam, Jeff, Eric, Victor and Dylan will be among the top 9 forwards.
Wow 7 forwards who could be dropped in among the top 6, in the '17-'18 season they had only 4 who scored 20 or more goals.
So who will be the last two?
Tage, Casey or Arttu are the most likely candidates.
IMO Zemgus, Kyle or Cody are long shots for permanent top 9 residency, but could move up if there are injuries.
So take your pick and put them where you would like.
It is nice looking at the prospects of a third line that could get more than 20 goals over an 82 game season.

Likewise, what's going on with Butcher? I know he had a good amount of hype coming out of Denver, but I get the sense from this site and others that his development has stalled. But I haven't seen him play a whole lot.
At face value I think swapping him for either Montour or Miller could make sense. But I'm hesitant based on how eager a lot of Devil's fans seem to move him.</div></div>
He is a offensive minded D man who is best when on the PP. He's a poor mans Ghost. Ghost is better but Butcher needs to be put in good opportunities. I think Hynes coached the talent out of some of these guys! They asked him to be more in the past two year and think he need s a good coach. I like Coach Nas but as an A coach not the boss, and Hynes was not the right fit! Ruff may not be everyone's cup of tea but it will be nice to have seasoned coach here. If you have shutdown guys on your roster Butcher is a good add. Done overdo the D zone starts and your fine. He can move teh puck but not at Hughes tempo so I guess we will see. Problem is we need LHD more than RHD, but we need D!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shootica</b></div><div>It's just hard to see him as a long-term asset here with his contract expiring at the end of this season and our glut of depth at RD. We've got Ristolainen, Jokiharju, Miller, and Montour as NHL RHDs and a prospect in Will Borgen who is ready to move up to the NHL. Risto and Jokiharju most likely aren't going anywhere, and Montour is likely easier to move than Miller since he's on a one year contract.
He hasn't been bad here, but he hasn't stood out as much as many fans expected when we traded for him. He's a good defenseman, fantastic skater that is solid but not spectacular in both zones. I think most Sabres' fans were expecting more offensive ability. But we've been playing him on the left side for the most part because we're weak at LHD, and he hasn't been as comfortable there.
So I think it makes some sense to trade him if we get either a similarly talented lefty in return or enough cap space to go out and improve in net.</div></div>
Thx good response
