Yeah, you're right. I don't think anyone can disagree that Risto is experienced. Or whole RHD unit is besides Jokiharju.
But Risto, and most likely all of our guys, are too costly for Calgary. They're gonna be looking for someone cheaper, someone who they can pay $1-2M and isn't going to cost Hanifin. Because if they make this trade, they're swapping a hole at 3RD for a hole at 2LD and that doesn't improve their roster.

It's been reported that they're in the trade market for an <strong>experienced RHD</strong>, not a top 4 RHD. They have Andersson and Tanev in their top 4, they just need a guy to play the bottom pairing and not look over their head on the middle pairing when Tanev is hurt.

The wouldn't be able.
There is a second buyout window that opens for 24 hours two days after their last arbitration settlement. But that buyout window is only available for players making above $4M in AAV, so Baertschi isn't eligible.

I'm honestly surprised they didn't just buy Baertschi out. He has a very buyout friendly contract.

I think he's worth less. Montour is someone who could easily net a 2nd+ at the trade deadline. Raanta is a very good goalie, but his injury concerns hurt his value and Arizona has a goalie logjam that may require them to trade someone this offseason.

I like the idea. Pretty sure Goligoski has us on his no trade list though. And we'd have to really watch out for the bonuses that will carry over to next season.

I like the framework.
I don't think Montour will return a 2nd, but at the same time I don't think Raanta will return a 2nd either. And I don't think Arizona would want Hutton in return, but this should leave us with enough cap space just to store him in Rochester for the year.

There is no chance Ottawa takes that second one.
They might do the Montour one on the basis that they can get a better pick for him at the trade deadline, but even then they probably aren't giving up a 2nd.

If I remember correctly, that buyout window is only open for players with an AAV above $4M, so Hutton is ineligible. I have to double check but I believe that's the case.

Yeah, he's not worth 6 million by any stretch. But he isn't a terrible player, he's actually a pretty good player in his role. That was my point.
And Larsson is an analytics darling so there's a subset of the online fanbase that absolutely loves him.

He really isn't. He's been pretty damn good in his role, and his shot suppression metrics are right up there with Larsson who Sabres fans love.
If he was signed to a $2M AAV contract, people would absolutely love him.

Not that I think this trade is a great idea, but Staal is a legitimately terrible player. Okposo has carved out a solid role as a 3rd or 4th line power winger and is probably worth $2M or so in a normal market. So that's not quite a fair comparison.

Is Risto an “amazing” player?
No, he’s not
But he is much better than his haters give him credit for.
He’s a solid Top4 defenseman,
who’s stats will go up as the TEAM around him improves
That’s my take on it anyways</div></div>
To be fair, even the more advanced stats that attempt to account for team play don't look very pretty for Risto.
I'm not saying he's a bad player, or 'below replacement level' as some statheads would say, but his bad analytics aren't just a result of playing for bad teams. I still think he's a solid #2/#3 defenseman and brings a lot to the team.

I'd imagine the cap savings are a big factor in that trade. So in that sense, the pick works well.
For me, there's two things that really work against this. One, we passed the buyout period for Hutton so he'd be waived to Rochester in this case. Two, from all indications Vegas isn't trading Fleury.
I think that defense is a touch thin in the top 4, but I like the idea of that bottom pairing. That's pretending that Kempny is healthy of course. McCabe - Borgen feels like a pairing with a purpose, which is a nice alternate to the island of misfit toys that our defense has seemingly been for a while.

Hanifin to BUF
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DaBus</b></div><div>Just do Hanifin for Montour and a 2nd since youre over the cap</div></div>
This is what I was about to say.
Hanifin is definitely a good target for the Sabres. A middle pairing offensive lefty makes perfect sense for us, and Hanifin's term would be nice because we don't have any prospects likely to fill that role any time soon.
I still don't know if it ultimately makes sense for Calgary because it leaves the left side lacking on NHL experience after Gio. There's certainly upside, but it's still a question mark.
Andersson-Montour-Tanev is a really nice group on the right side, and that protects you for if Tanev gets injured at some point. I can see it both ways.
It's certainly a risk. I think this sort of trade pays off if Valimaki develops like people hope. But if he falters a bit, you're looking real dry on the left. Montour can play the left side in a pinch, but that's obviously less than ideal if you're moving a true LHD to get him.

Got a question for Blues fans.
If you go back in time knowing everything you do today, would you take this trade if Tage Thompson and a 1st was replaced with Robert Thomas and a 2nd? I'm just curious as that's what I was clamoring for at the time.

That's kinda what I assume will happen. Raanta will get moved for a modest price unless someone really blows their socks off on Kuemper. To me, the proposal here does that but it's something that will really depend person to person.

Kuemper
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kotkaniemi15</b></div><div>Kuemper’s one of the best goalies in the NHL right now. He’s better than Taylor Hall, and the package that I mentioned is similar to what NJ got for Hall when he was a pending UFA. I admit there wouldn’t be as much of a market for Kuemper because he is a G, and because he’s never won a Hart trophy.
As for trading Raanta, I guess Lehner only got a 2nd at the deadline, so there’s clearly not much of a market for rental goalies. They could trade him to a team with an injury for maybe a 3rd & a 5th a month into the season. Or if they think there’s a realistic chance that they trade Kuemper during the season, they could just keep him.</div></div>
So then, do you run with three goalies or do you risk losing Hill to waivers by sending him to Tuscon?
I think it would be very tempting for a team like Buffalo or Chicago to claim Hill if he went on waivers. That's most of the reason why I'm so interested in the Yotes' goalie situation. I think they may be left with no choice but to move someone.

Really, a solid prospect and a 1st wouldn't do it? I'm not a Yotes fan so I don't know, but I can't imagine teams offering up much more. Especially since most teams have their goalie situation locked down.
If you were offered either this or a 3rd for Raanta, would you rather do the Raanta deal?

underrated piece
Okposo, in this COVID cap world, is probably worth around $1.5-2M. I think there could be opportunity to trade him is we retain 50% (making him $3M on the cap) and add in a piece. But then we'd only be getting like $2M in savings because we still would have to replace his roster spot.
I don't think it's realistic to trade him.

Opening Day Roster Projection 20-21
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mikemjr75</b></div><div>Just worried the way Adams/Krueger talk about Rieder that he is definitely in the lineup. They just gave Thompson 2 years so i would think he has to be in the lineup somewhere. Where do we put Cozens? I want him in the lineup but seems very "Sabres" to find a way to keep him out, same with Ruots.</div></div>
Cozens will likely play RW on one of the top 3 lines. Thompson has shown the ability to play LW in the past, so if Cozens is ready then I think he pushes Tage to the other side.
I think Ruotsalainen will compete for a spot, but I see him playing the bulk of the year in Rochester. Same path that we took with Olofsson that worked very well for him.
