Attitude change in Edm
I heard the Seravalli piece, that's not the "reported" price, its what he speculates it may cost. Take from that what you will.
I'm skeptical that Arizona is a place Campbell would ok a trade to or that Arizona wants to deal with the real money of his contract, although it fits their MO.
Don't really see Montreal considering that trade given their needs and preferences.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xspyrit</b></div><div>Wait, what do you think Allen and Monahan are worth?
McLeod (solid bottom-6 forward) and a 2nd is actually a good return for 2 UFAs, one of which is a goalie and don't hold much value if any</div></div>
Montreal is working on re-signing Montembault, they don't actually want to trade him, Monahan is a center who can play anywhere in a line-up and those rentals tend to return a lot, and Montreal (like the vast majority of sellers) likely isn't really looking for a "solid bottom-6 forward".

burnout is spot on. mtl looking for youth, picks, trading vets.
why tarde monty, or math?
monahan can go somewhere but hell get back a lot if healthy. 1+ good prospect AT LEAST
entirely possible he comes back to mtl in offseason to resign longer term.

Calgary should trade Zadorov regardless of his trade request. He's a pending UFA and someone will overpay for him, it's preferable to trade him than lose him for nothing.

You totally ignored his point there. I'd add that Drai scores an outsized portion of his points on the PP. Last season, he scored like 65 or so PP points.

Fair enough. Heiskanen and McAvoy are both routinely underrated. I'd take either over Hughes in a heartbeat.
Also, hot take: I think Rantanen is better than Drai.

Hughes isn’t top 10 yet. If this is in order then Matthews, Draisaitl, and Tkachuk are too low. I’d put Fox and Kucherov over Hughes and Crosby, and maybe Pettersson over Vasilevskiy (kinda tough to compare goalies and skaters though)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CBA</b></div><div>High risk ? Where ?</div></div>
Let's face it, paying a guy 64 million after 77 games is risky. It's not like Sanderson was a Calder Finalist either. Not saying we won't outperform that contract, but look at a Myers for example, insane rookie year and downhill from there. Again, not saying its gonna happen with Sanderson, but there is definitely some risks

Gotta ask, why did OTT trade for Jakob Chychrun. Are they planning on paying 3 LD over 7+ million.

Why in the world would we turn our home run from the 2019 draft into a shot in the 2025 dark plus some random flotsam and jetsam? Zegras is as valuable to us as Caufield and Suzuki are to you, and more valuable to us than Slafkovsky or Guhle.
What a dreadful idea.

No chance Leafs sign Staal, but a vet dman making similar $ makes sense. Too much $ for Brodie but not enough for Lili so washes out. Not sure we will bring back Bert at that ticket, but easy to find a replacement - I could pot 20 playing in that line. Agree that is feasible although we all hope nylander comes in at less than $10M 🤞

I mean unless he requests a trade he’ll stay a bruin for a while.
Contracts that big for that long don’t get moved, really for any reason. Only one I can think of is Jack eichel who requested a trade

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ste_Catherine_Street</b></div><div>Not sure why you bolded the fact I'm a Hab fan, but ok.
Your argument for more experienced 3rd pairing D makes sense for sure. I don't think you and I will agree on the quality of Kulak though. I dont remember the specific games, but I do remember he got turned and tripped over himself twice leading to goals last year. He is very bad in front of the net taking the sticks away (like he was in Mtl) and he gets outmuscled more easily compared to others. IMO it's a glaring mistake. Personally I don't think he's good enough but I can see why you would disagree.
A little more context, Mtl has had dmen that are horrible in front of their net. It cost us Price's prime and one of them was even at fault for his serious knee injury that ended his career. I notice that Edm and Mtl have the same weakness in developing their dmen to clear the front of the net.
But like I say, Edm fans don't agree with me ever.</div></div>
I bolded it to make sure that point wasn't missed as that's an entirely valid view to hold for a rebuilding team filled to the brim with young LD trying to make it in the league. No toxic double-meaning or anything :)
I don't see Kulak as being uniquely guilty of such mistakes. Does it happen? Absolutely. Does it happen at an irregularly high rate? Not in my extensive viewings of him. There were two or three times in a short span (at the beginning of the season IIRC) where he quite dramatically tripped over himself while pivoting and trying to chase an winger in full flight but those didn't end up being signals of a coming trend, but were instead isolated instances of poor choices/execution leading to dangerous chances/goals. On the whole, he's a genuinely good skater that typically does very well defending off the rush.
As for your comment regarding his net front defense, again I don't see it how you do. I saw approximately average ability in netfront battles. Maybe his time in MTL was different. However, given you employed all of Chiarot, Weber, and Edmundson within the timeframe that Kulak played in MTL, maybe your D corps was simply above average in that respect and, by comparison, he stood out as only average (or perhaps even below average). However, even if I were to accept your assertion that he's bad net front, that's not all there is to defending. Puck retrievals, puck battles on the boards, in-zone positioning, stick positioning (whether in-zone or one the rush), puck transitions, etc are all dimensions of defensive play that matter and Kulak tends to fare well in most of them. In fact, most statistical models and microstat trackers seem to align on Kulak's strengths being in his own end.
Regarding EDM's weakness netfront, I'm not sure how much is inability of EDM's defense and how much is coached. Prior to a change in mid-to-late January, EDM Dmen had quite a tendency to chase opponents behind the net more frequently than many other teams and there seemed to be something about it that was systemic. Swapping Barrie for Ekholm certainly helped, but even just calling up Desharnais made a significant difference so maybe it was a mix of personnel and system.
