My best Guess
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Windjammer</b></div><div>I don't see Montreal players with the want bias you do, I see then as they actually are. He's a bottom pairing (at best) defenseman. As you say maybe even a career AHL'er. He's not returning a bottom 6 forward and a high 2nd. Two teams have given up on Barron now and he can't crack one of the worst defenses on a team with very little depth. He has no value to a good team with excellent defense like Winnipeg. Both pieces on their own have more value than Barron.
Barron needs waivers to be sent down next season as I understand from Montreal fans and what Cap Friendly says, so he'll and up on waivers next season at some point.</div></div>
Thats just a bad take. Barron will be a regular next year. Kovacevic and Harris/Struble will be traded, Savard too at the deadline. RHD is the highest valued asset in the league and Barron hasnt been perfect but hasnt been bad at all. They've used the fact he wasnt waiver eligible because they have 8 nhl caliber defenseman and need to rotate, but they'll clearly make room this summer. The 3 starting RHDs should be Reinbacher, Barron and Mailloux by the end of next year. I dont think they'll trade him, he's more valuable on the ice than what he can get on the market (which would be more than rasumus "1 assist in 27 games" kupari)

Cant see Harris and Barron staying
Barron is 100% gone IMO. Mailloux has simply passed him. Think they're gonna trade him for a similar-aged forward (The likes of Tomasino, Holloway, etc.)
As for Harris, I think he'll stick around one more season and Struble will be down because of his waivers exemption.

Fiala Comparison
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Subbanator7667</b></div><div>Fiala was coming off a 85 point season when he was traded, Necas isn't close to that.
Also, there's no way Anaheim gives you one of their 1st rounders for him. That pick is still likely a lottery pick and possibly a top 5 pick, something that Necas isn't worth</div></div>
Agreed. I would make that offer as the Anaheim GM without the third (pick #65) and with top-10 protection on the first.

I wouldn't say any of these are necessarily better but they would be "free": Montour, Tanev, Pesce, DeMelo, Roy, Walker.
That being said, we'll see how many of those <em>actually</em> reach free agency.

Except… Matheson has among the top 5 toughest competition among defensemen. He plays real minutes at 5v5 not just munchkins unlike the others you named.
Suggesting he’s not worth more than a 3rd is not knowing anything about the player sorry.

Because some people (very small minority now) are still obsessed with the "French connection" for the Habs..... it's really nothing more than that.
Slafkovsky is literally trending (and Slaf also said it himself to be modeling his game after) to be like Rantanen. There is zero chance MTL moves him. But I'm sure NYR have their own reason why Lafreniere is also 100% off the table.
So this is a pointless exercise, both team obviously have zero interest in this.

For any other team besides you and Toronto yes, but for you guys and Toronto that's the price it would take to trade Brady to a rival team. You literally have to overpay.

it's more to do with the fact that Guhle is already our best defenseman and he's still really young, he's also the only one of those guys that is a guaranteed top 4 dman, I sure hope this doesn't happen but there's realities that none of those guys become top 4 dmen and we're looking back at a Guhle trade like we look at the Drouin-Sergachev deal

We'll there's your opinion, and then there's the opinions of more knowledgeable people like Max Lapierre who says the Habs just need to add a couple (2) of top 7 forwards in order to be a playoff team.
With the amount of 1 goal games we've been in, the idea of adding an entire scoring line of Lindholm, Monahan, Dach, makes me think we score at least another 50 goals and since they are all relatively responsible defensively we can expect to prevent maybe 25 goals against.
A margin of 75 goals puts us in a position goal differential situation on it's own.
Now factor in player development and growth from guys like Slafkovsky, Newhook, Caufield, and Roy, we could be very competitive IMO.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your perspective. I do not believe in the Ottawa, Buffalo, Anaheim model, I much prefer the Detroit model of rebuild. Hence this post

Quiet Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Subbanator7667</b></div><div>Love this strategy. Keep it simple, no big trades for a forward, no FA signings, just let the youth play their way up.
Next season you're likely looking at another top 10 pick to add to the core, they'll have like 20+ million in cap space with limited players to resign and there's a much better FA agent market next season to spend money on</div></div>
exactly, guys like Dvorak, Armia, Anderson and Gallgher are likely gonna cost us to dump them, but there's no rush to do so, most of our forward prospects are still a year or more away from being ready, and the last thing that we want to have happen is we sign a free agent or a few that end up being in the same boat as Anderson and Gallagher are in now, overpaid with term, and this years FA class for forwards is basically Guentzel, Reinhart, Lindholm, and a bunch of older guys looking to win a cup or get one last big contract, not quite what Montreal need, and while a lot of these guys won't hit the market next summer, Marner, Rantanen, Draisaitl, Crosby, Verhaeghe, Konecny, Boeser, Buchnevich, Sharangovich, Ehlers, etc. are all potential free agents next summer, a way larger group than what's available this year

24-25 Habs Playoff Team
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Subbanator7667</b></div><div>Honestly don't know why Habs fans want to rush this. Be bad again next year, have a ridiculous amount of cap space to throw around in one of the best FA classes of recent memory and then see where you land</div></div>
I agree with you completely. If Calgary does Montreal a favour and finishes out of the top 10 (for a draft spot) next year (perhaps unlikely) but does not make the playoffs (very likely) then Montreal may have 2 picks next year in the 5 to 16 range in a deep draft. This could really help with organizational needs (along with 2 picks in the first round this year). And, as you said, they could have $11,3M in additional cap space with Dvorak, Armia and Savard contracts being up. One more year of true rebuilding (playing poorly) and then start making the bigger changes in the 2024-2025 off season and beyond.

2 -Lindstrom (CHI) - Great Consolation prize
3- Levshunov (ANA) - Best Dmen + Verbeek guy
4- Demidov(CBJ) - Best BPA. Get one of the most talented
5- Dickinson (ARI) - Sanderson Comp. Top5 assured imo
6- Ignila (MTL) - He has everything.
7- Parekh (OTT) - They would be more than happy.
8- Silayev (CGY) - Premium Dmen Falls. Him or Catton</div></div>
Demidov won't fall, none of the teams in the top 5 are making the playoffs in the next 2-3 years. The only reason Michkov fell last year was because he wasn't clearly better than Carlsson or Fantilli. Montreal then drafted more for need and Arizona picked someone unexpected by everyone.
Lindstrom is a good prospect but he's not even the 2nd most skilled center in the draft, that's Catton by a mile. If you are going to make an argument for someone besides Levshunov or Demidov going #2 it's him. Lindstrom is simply just big. Chicago will pick the best player available and that's a toss up between Demidov and Levshunov. Also Lindstrom's injury is just as much of a deterrent as the Russian factor.
The Habs are apparently interested in Iginla but I would still be shocked if they chose him over Catton or Lindstrom.
