Zegras had one practice. Yes, this kid is extremely talented and we're all excited to see him play but placing him in the lineup, right now, would mean forcing a veteran to lose their spot. That might come to pass in the near future but they weren't going to make that decision after just one practice. And it's not like he's banished to the Gulls for the entirety of the season. This team is still evaluating, they've had all of two weeks of camp and no preseason. And for the record, I wanted him in the lineup for tomorrow's game but I understand why he isn't. I'm also extremely curious to see if Lundestrom is indeed better as a winger than as a center because he has left a lot to be desired in his brief NHL experience.

Hakanpaa, Mahura and probably Curran over Hutton. I don't know why everyone thinks this dude coming in on a PTO last minute to fill in for an injured player, who was slated to be a fringe guy to begin with, is slotted in to play. Keep in mind he'll have to quarantine when he gets here.
But I would absolutely throw Drysdale in. Maybe not Thursday but at least on Saturday. See what this kid can do.

Whoa. That's quite a comparison. That's like saying Cam Fowler is a d-man in the mold of Paul Coffey. Sure they play a similar style but aren't in the same universe in terms of talent. I'm starting to think we were teased by Troy's game at the WJC and in college when he might actually be closer to the kid that fell to the fifth round. This is a big year for him.

Anaheim Ducks signed Anthony Stolarz (2 Years / $950,000 AAV)
He might be the backup next year. Like others have noted, this is primarily a move for expansion purposes. Not that Stolarz is bad or anything but I just haven't seen enough from him to feel confident he can hold down that role for a whole season. And don't let his one-way status fool you either. A lot of Gulls are on one-way deals. It might be the only way to convince veterans to live in San Diego considering how expensive the area is and how high taxes are in this state. And in a normal year, the Gulls draw extremely well for an AHL team and probably have the means to afford such a high payroll.

Is this team better than last year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ForsbergForVezina</b></div><div>The acquisitions of Shattenkirk and arrival of Zegras and Comtois make them better imo. Obviously Zegras performing well in his rookie year isn't a given but Shattenkirk had an incredibly underrated season last year and should be a massive help in all three zones, while Comtois has been pretty good in terms of production in both the NHL and AHL, with still some room to grow though.
Idk why I'm so passionately drinking the Ducks Kool-Aid, I just really like what they're building. Everyone looks at Ottawa, LA and the Rangers as the Next Big Things in the NHL, but Anaheim is really up there imo</div></div>
I think the lack of hype is due to a few things. For starters, this team has been real bad the last two seasons and they only offseason move they made was signing Shattenkirk (though they also ignore our acquisitions of Milano and Heinen at the deadline). There's also the smaller market thing. The LAs and New Yorks of the world will always get more attention. And finally a lot of our potential success is dependent on Terry, Steel, Jones and Comtois reaching their potential which was the theme of last offseason and it didn't happen. I mean if everyone plays to their abilities we can be an excellent team (I'm looking at you Manson and Rakell) but we're seen two straight years where almost none of them have so skepticism is definitely warranted. But so is optimism. Bottom line, I would place any bets, one way or the other, on this team this year. But I'm definitely hopeful.

Who's talking about trading picks and prospects? I may have misunderstood the original point you were making, or perhaps the original point of this thread. Maybe "going for it" for me just letting this kid, and maybe even Drysdale, show what they can do providing they prove they belong. I'm definitely not interested in this team selling off assets for some rentals to make a run, that's for damn sure.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ForsbergForVezina</b></div><div>That's exactly what I said, that 4 spot is anyone's guess. The Wild should get it, but since when do they perform to expectations? The Sharks have the worse goaltending tandem in the league and zero forward depth, the Kings are a daycare and the Coyotes randomly decide to implode every other week.
The Ducks still have a potential top-3 goalie in the league, a very respectable defense core and a lot of potential in their forward group. I think guys like Comtois, Steel and Terry are gonna take big steps this year.</div></div>
This.
But that's still very much based on the assumption that the younger guys on the roster are ready to compete night in, night out and reach their potential. If they do that and Gibby is as solid as we know he can be then yes, this is a good team. We've got a ways to go before we can be considered a legit contender but playoffs should be a realistic goal this year.

They should follow through with the rebuild, but as soon as some of those prospects come up and look effective then look to spend a bit.</div></div>
If Zegras is here and has a 41-point season (it literally took three seconds to do that math) we should absolutely be contending for a spot. No one is talking about spending to fill this team out because this kid will put us over the top. Basically our options are: put this kid in bubble wrap and potentially be as bad as before or let him play and get good experience and hope that elevates this teams' fortunes. He has nowhere else to play for a month so we might as see what we're got. If he's the goods, he's the goods and sticks around. If this stage is too big for him then he goes to San Diego. There's really no reason not to play him right now.

He shouldn't be plugged in at center but he could very well be our best LW, right now. He has nowhere else to play for a month so you can bet they'll at least test him out on the 14th against the Knights. I think everyone is overestimating the quality of our wingers right now. Hell, I hope Drysdale sees action too. Eff it, let's see what these kids can do.

At the end of the day, it's really not up to Murph who plays and who doesn't. And if it is this team is headed for disaster because that's no way to run a hockey team. I Murph just told Backes what he wanted to hear to keep him happy all off-season. Because if Backes acts like a baby for not getting in the lineup we can just stash him in San Diego for the rest of the year. But if Eakins is of the same mind as Murph and keeps Backes in the lineup over say Jones or Comtois I'll be done with him. Not totally on board with Eakins to begin with either.

Why does everyone think that's a sure thing? From the sounds of things he isn't skating on a line in camp that's expected to be in the lineup. And he sucks. Never mind what having Zegras on the roster will do the lines. I find it extremely hard to believe Eakins will shoehorn Backes into the lineup in lieu of a more talented winger for the sake of justifying his existence on the roster or to placate his feelings. If this organization is serious about winning this year, this won't be the case. Or everyone needs to get fired.

Rakell doesn't work on the right side, despite his handedness. I also wouldn't pair Zegras with Getzlaf. Both players look to pass first. If Zegras makes it in the lineup I think he would fit really well with Rico and Silvy.
I have no desire seeing Terry languishing on the fourth line. In my opinion we have a really solid fourth line with Rowney-Grant-Deslauriers. Any of our fringe wingers that don't fit in the top line don't fit in the lineup in my opinion.
We're not waiving Guhle to fit a 31 year-old rookie, who's waiver-exempt, into the lineup. Curran is taxi squad at best. He's especially not seeing the ice over Djoos, that's for sure.

I doubt he gets claimed and if he does it isnt the end of the world. Curran is being paid 1M even if he's in the minors, That can't be overlooked and with the reduced income for an already low income team that is also paying Corey Perry 6.6M this season to not play for them, and Ryan Kesler I would be shocked if Curran isnt on the NHL roster, and he plays on the right side which none of Djoos, Larsson and Guhle do.
Curran has been great in europe and fits on the third pair, If Guhle had a long term spot moving forward with us he would have a spot no question. Between Larsson, Djoos, Guhle, Mahura, Thurn, Lacombe we're bound to lose at least one of them somehow. Guhle isnt an NHLer at this point and just because he's young doesnt mean he should be given a shot</div></div>
Guhle has been inconsistent but his game started to round out before the season suspended. He's only 23 and was a key piece in the Montour trade. I'm sick and tired of cutting bait on these young d-men before they've proven they can't hack it at this level, which Guhle has not.
Curran is completely unproven at this level. Sure he might be a late bloomer but lets not exaggerate the merits of being a successful veteran in Sweden, a league that is on par with the AHL. I feel like people put a lot of stock into a players' one-way contract status as an indicator that he has a leg-up on making the roster but we routinely stack the Gulls' roster with guys on one way deals. We're about to do it again. They kind of have to to convince quality tweeners to play and move their families to Southern California. And last I checked, Guhle is on a one-way deal too. I hardly think the 200K difference in their salaries is enough to demote the better player. Unless Curran is the better player but that absolutely remains to be seen. I mean he might be, who knows? All I know is he'd be an anomaly if he is. I think Guhle can still carve out a niche as a depth d-man and I think a lot of clubs would think so too which is why I don't want him exposed onto waivers.

Brendan Guhle has to pass through waivers and I feel like there's a good chance he gets claimed. Curran doesn't have to clear waivers and is completely unproven at this level so I would much rather he get parked in the minors or on the taxi squad in lieu of potentially losing Guhle (or Larsson for that matter). Welinski or Hakanpaa can chill out in San Diego until (if) we need them. I'm sick of losing young d-men that we've developed just to see them finally flourish with other teams. I'm not holding my breath that Curran is fit for this level. 31 year-old rookies don't happen on accident.

Zegras only makes this team if he's earned the 1C spot. No reason to squeeze him into the lineup unless it's clear he's our best center in camp. I have no interest seeing this kid fighting for playing time when he should be getting top-line minutes somewhere. I don't think that'll happen but who knows. Not a chance. We can't offer him the most money, don't have the money available (just because we CAN put Kesler on long-term IR doesn't mean ownership wants to pay that extra money in a year when they have cut a huge check to cover this seasons' losses) and we're one on the worst teams in the league.
