23-24 with Horvat
I don’t like the idea of adding a player having a career year looking to get paid a ton. But I do like replacing the 2C position after trading Dubois for that FLA 1st. I’d imagine that Dubois deal happens on draft day when the jets know what they’ll likely be getting with that pick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wpgman</b></div><div>I think adding a 2024 WPG 2nd is all what is needed for the initial offer to get accepted.</div></div>
Here's the problem, the package revolves around a Defenseman with size (which we like) a 24 year old goalie in the AHL who maybe can become a NHL backup, and two candidates for third line center.
Anaheim has Centers coming out of our ears right now, and we already have Zegras, McTavish, and Lundestrom playing in the big club. Now maybe Gustafsson is an improvement on him due to size, but Zhilkin just feels like a Russian copy of a young guy we already have.
The goalie really doesn't move the needle much, while we do have a need for an AHL goalie, I'd prefer someone who may be able to make it to the show one day, and I don't think Berdin fits our timeline.
So for us, the only piece we really WANT in that trade is Stanley, the rest is basically window dressing for us. We think, for providing a top 9 guy who consistently scores near 50 points on one of the most defense starved teams in the NHL for the past few years for 1.5 years below 3 mil AAV (in this cap climate) who can play wind and center anywhere in the top 9 and be used in all situations and is damned good in the dot, that's going to cost a lot. We want a 23 1st. We'll pitch back over our last 2nd our or own 3rd if Stanley is thrown in. Otherwise, its more valueable to us to keep Henrique on the team.

Shouldnt waste this year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wpgman</b></div><div>From what I am seeing, NJD is looking for top6 help. With Hamilton and Marino in the top 2 position on the right side making Severson tradeable. I think Garland is a good option. I think NJ could pick up a cheap 3RHD for the playoff run.</div></div>
I'm a big fan of Garland but the Devils are very deep in terms of forwards already and especially now given that Palat and Bastian are returning from injury.
Getting Garland in now means the Devils would have to scratch two very decent forwards at any given night (guys like Wood, Boqvist, McLeod, Zetterlund etc).
At the same time, Marino is currently out injured so the Devils D is stretched a little thin right now.
But the main factor conducive to the Devils immense success so far in the season is how they've consistently been able to ice very strong defensive pairings at all time, the D corps have been their best performing and most valuable department this season.
Therefore the Devils cannot trade Severson, they'd lose too much of their competitiveness for the playoffs for it to make sense.

We need to sign DeBrincat + Pinto and then fill out the rest of the roster with additional players for next season.
With only 17 million in cap space.
To alleviate the cap crunch, we need to dump Zaitsev and take on less salary, not more.
That's why taking on Schmidt just to make what is supposed to be a very simple trade at the deadline doesn't make any sense at all for us.

non-option for the Sens. They need to get DeBrincat, Sanderson, Pinto, and others signed before Schmidt's contract runs out, taking on a contract like that just can't happen

So the longest you'll have him would be next years deadline. Odds are you won't be getting the better player in a deal for dubois since he has pretty much said he only wants to play in montreal so you'll be taking picks, prospect and cap hits, which means you'd only make that trade if you're not looking to go far in playoffs at next years deadline. So with that thought in mind you'd either be looking to win the cup this year which right now doesn't look good for winnipeg or you'd move him right now and get the most you can for him.</div></div>
Wow. Two completely erroneous assumptions in this ramble.

I have to agree with you there. Montreal fans get really upset and can't tolerate it when you point out reality to them, but this is 100% correct.
I guess the silver lining for Jets fans is that if the deals that are always proposed here, over and over, as "fair" actually were fair, the deal would have been made long ago.

Retool for a new core
I think jets either need to keep building and go all in for a two year window and risk losing a few guys for nothing or sell and sell large, not sure if there is a nucleus to be built without being drafted by Winnipeg and being a jet from the start. So firesale for draftpicks and possibly elc contracts, or double down on current and let the chips fall where they may. Whose to say that dvorak who is regularly moved to Winnipeg on this site, doesn’t want to walk in three years, and possibly have to move in 2 anyway. So why not just keep Dubois til deadline in two years and move him as a rental or hockey trade depending on playoff situation.

The idea behind that trade is that Arizona flips him to a contender. So jets basically hand over an asset to Arizona that they retain on and flip for assets. Jets may need to add a sweetener and not take back any assets to make it happen.

what does WPG get or have to give up
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wpgman</b></div><div>The end team would be a contender so what trades scenarios could there be?</div></div>
Based on cap space available and the desire to take a major step forward this season, I'm thinking it's either New Jersey or Ottawa. Both are mostly young teams that could benefit from some veteran presence, don't really need picks right now because they are coming out of rebuilds and have a young core, or may have an overabundance of prospect talent.
I would say Minnesota would be interested for the same reason, but 12 mil in dead cap this year and 15 for the next two really destroys their ability to.
And of course Vegas, because Vegas is "in" on everyone. Maybe they realize they've made a huge mistake trading away all their futures and offer Eichel for Wheeler and some draft picks before his NMC kicks in (if it hasn't already)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vermathex</b></div><div>i dont know PLD's worth. if hes getting traded in order for you to get full value it has to be to a team that going to sign him long term. i think the return would be shockingly low for a player with his potential since hes prob heading out of WPG as an FA. my best guess would be similar to the kevin hayes deal to wpg. im thinking more of a first and an A- to B+ prospect</div></div>
Dubois is worth more than that to a contender as a rental. Hayes was a pending UFA, Dubois is an RFA with another year of team control. He’s worth more than hayes for sure. There will be a desperate contender that’s had injury issues and wants to fill a hole that will pay a high price for two playoff runs with Dubois. I’d imagine he gets close to a top prospect and a 1st. If jets want to make a hockey deal expect a younger player with potential swapped for a prove. Dubois.
Now if you can find a spot where he’d sign long term the value increases.

Severson will cost something similar to savard and chiarot I would imagine. Dillon to edm seems like a fit. Maybe for Jp?
Schmidt doesn’t look like he’ll be on the move. Though Ottawa or MTL seem like fits.
With 1.5-2.5M retained, wheeler has good value. He’s near a pt/gm still and brings loads of experience. Giroux just got signed for 6.5m per. I’d imagine he has decent value at 6-6.5 M

Are we trying to replace PLD with Kadri
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wpgman</b></div><div>Is Silfverberg done? If so WPG can use that cap space somewhere else.</div></div>
Silfverberg is the Anaheim version of Jason Zucker. When he's healthy he's a useful middle 6 forward and a good vet in the locker room. But that's maybe more an "if" he's healthy vs "when" for the last two seasons. There isn't any reason though to think he won't start the season playing as it was a blood clot in his leg that ended his last season. It sounded like he could have played a few games at the end but with where the Ducks were at there just wasn't any point in doing so. They did the same with Max Jones.
All that said, Anaheim has no interest in Wheeler. Defensive issues, massive 2-yr contract, etc, etc.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wpgman</b></div><div>Dubois hasn't given up in WPG. Played hard last year and was a force in the world championships. As far as I know he wants to be traded to MTL but is not forcing a trade. He has also said that he wants to explore free agency in 2 years but since he is playing for a contract he will not be giving up anytime soon. If he was to be traded to MTL is he just signing a 2 year contract? I don't think so. IF MTL would be trading for him then it would be a long term deal so you have to take that in consideration. So the question right now is? Is 8 years of Dubois worth Dvorak, Barron, Drouin, and a 1st? I think it is pretty close.</div></div>
I don't mind giving up that package as long as the 1st is top 10 protected and We get Salomonsson in return cause we can't move out a RD prospect without getting one back. So if we had to include a lesser prospect or a 2nd to get PLD and Salomonsson then great that's a deal, otherwise we need to keep Barron.

I’m sure a GM of a contending team will take a fat rip before TDL and overpay. It happens every single year. Especially if the team knows that they’re acquiring a 1B center for 2 years, I’m sure there will be a GM dumb enough to overpay.
I like the trade <a href="/users/Wpgman" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Wpgman</a> proposed and totally get why MTL wouldn’t want to move Barron. I feel like there’s 100% a spot that Winnipeg and MTL could meet in the middle and get it done. It just comes down to if the habs/jets are willing to get to that point. I’m not sure Chevy is in a rush to ship PLD off to MTL, as I still think there’s a large chance someone overpays at the TDL and jets net a better return there.
