I think they are playing on the edge of seeing if they will be in the hunt and what type of year Faulk has early. If he puts up numbers and the Canes are out of a race his value could go up for prospects

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bf3351</b></div><div>That's your opinion. Kings have always been able to skate with Sharks and we've always had a relatively older team. We won 2 Stanley Cups with older teams. Everybody knows or at least should know that you don't need fast players to play a fast game. Our issue is going to be John Stevens.</div></div>
Fair it is my opinion. I would also argue the game has changed quite a bit since the Kings won the cup four seasons ago. The Kings did win then with a team wasn't the fastest but what they could do is physically punish any team they play, much like the Ducks did 4-7 years ago. The problem with that is this Kings roster isn't all that punishing, the compete level isn't high and those two players certainly don't raise it, and I would be concerned about Stevens too because that all starts with him.

The Wild aren't going to trade for Panarin...so move on!
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wabit</b></div><div>You don't want Moulson, even an awful Buffalo team last year had no use for him and sent him to the AHL (and plans on doing it again this season). Patches or Lee as rentals would be a good fit for Fla, but they'll be looking for a big term/money contract after the season.
I think they should stay out of the pure rental market and go after a Nino or a Zucker (using the WIld cause I know them the best) type of player: mid-20's with term. It'll cost more in assets, but you get the security with knowing the cap hit and they won't walk away after the season.
Granlund would be ideal for Fla, but MN would have to fall off the map before the TDL for that to happen.</div></div>
So what is the move for the Wild then? They are in this lull of not true contenders but not ready to rebuild. The Blues made it clear that hey are making moves to get over that hump but Min... They seem to just be stuck in this standstill.
The problem with Patch is his numbers were abysmal last year and I think very few teams would take a risk on him until the trade deadline and it seems Montreal wants to move him sooner rather than later. Lee is a more interesting case, but that won't happen anytime soon with everybody still wrapping their heads around the JT move. A move that I liked that is along the lines of what you mentioned is the Sharks and Kane, if FLA can do that then that would be ideal.

I actually like the Vegas trade for both teams except I think the condition on the pick is too high. The problem is Skinner is a UFA at the end of next season and his current cap hit is a little high for his production considering what he would ask when he goes to resign if he chooses to do so with Vegas. The only way I see this trade going through is closer to Christmas if CAR is out of the race already and Vegas needs help from a second line scoring winger next to Stastny and Skinner is putting up numbers because it's a contract year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wabit</b></div><div>I think Fla needs to make the Playoffs next season. Maybe not be a contender, but to just get the Playoff experience and see what happens from there. I can see them hitting the rental market for someone they think will re-sign there. I don't see Staal re-signing in Fla, it the wrong climate for him. He's into the family thing and playing pond hockey with his kids at this point.</div></div>
I'm thinking the exact same thing on FLA and their chances and the mindset of Staal as well. I think FLA might be in the market for a deadline deal with a potential rental who could resign, but do you think they go big? Panarin? Simmonds? Eberle? Moulson? Nyquist? The east has far more UFAs at the end of next season it is just tough to tell who will be sellers.

By adding Patch and Kovalchuk this team doesn't get any faster. Kovalchuk is not the skater he was 5 years ago. LA lacked the speed to skate with Vegas in a series, also don't see them keeping up with San Jose either.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wabit</b></div><div>How is Staal overpayed 75p for $3.5 is dollar store prices? Or do you mean his next contract that is yet to be determined?
I'd like Greenway to turn out to be the center that Kunin was hoped to be when he was drafted. I'm not sure if either of them will be a true center in the NHL, or just a wing trying to play center. Bjugstad would still be an okay fit as a RHS middle-6 wing, but would he even be an upgrade over a healthy Coyle?
I'm meh about Tippett. He has a NHL shot, but he excels in space that I'm not sure he'll get in the NHL. I didn't see him last year, so maybe he improved his all around game, but he was kind of checked out when it came to d-zone play before that.</div></div>
I was mistaken on Staal's production levels compared to his contract because that is a bargain. You do bring up the point of that next contract though because the way it is right now he would be a rental in FLA and this trade could only happen if FLA thinks they are true contenders this season. I don't think they are. I think they'll be a playoff team, but I don't see them getting through those top five teams in the East (Pit, Was, TB, Tor, Bos) next season. FLA's best window for a cup is still two-three out and because of that don't think it warrants giving up a potential top 6 for a one year rental

D Upgrade?
Top D = Cup isn't the end all, it is just a very large contributing factor. The thing with Pittsburgh and that first cup is those D played within in themselves and understood they needed to move pucks up to that stacked offensive core. Toronto needs a D who can move pucks really well and be a shutdown guy to absorb those tough minutes. Vegas making it to the cup final came because the whole team was committed to defense which I don't see this Toronto group doing. W Karlsson was plus 49 this reg season, which Leaf is going to be anywhere close to that. If the full team is not committed to all out Defense they need a guy who can play 26+ minutes a night

FLA is only a year or two out from being a real contender. They won't give an up and coming prospect up like Tippett to take on an overpaid
Staal when in two years they're going to have to pay that young core. Niederreiter doesn't really fit into FLA right now either

Nash probably is going to retire anyways unless he is going to a surefire cup contender. I don't think Toronto is that team next year Toronto is the future of the east if they keep Mathews, but they shouldn't force it into next season

This trade is envisioned with both teams in the race next year. Flyers core is aging and needs to make a run while they still can, but if they aren't in the race come deadline time I could see them moving Simmonds as a rental for either prospects or draft picks

This is a win now move for the Hurricanes and that problem with that is that they are not going to win now. Tampa. Pitt, Was. Tor, and Bos will hold the conference down for the next three years. Focus for more long term deals unless your goal is to just make the second round and lose. Plus the Bs need a second line scoring winger and that isn't going to be Abdelkader and they won't be giving up Bjork who could be that guy in a few

The Central is just so stacked right now. I would honestly sell out at this point an cash Seguin in for assets because I don't see them besting St. Louis, Nashville, or Winnipeg this season. The Stars core is still not as good as the Hawks particularly when it comes to the playoffs so I think the window has closed on this Stars core winning unless they pickup a shutdown D who can absorb big minutes like Josi, Suter, Petro, and Kieth do in the division

Yeah completely true, and on top of that they'd never sign and trade him to their biggest rivals. It is more of a signal that the Flyers need a young starting goalie because these two won't cut it if they want to make a legitimate run before this core ages

The Kings need depth at forward and not another top 6. This top 6 would be top class, but would still get run through the ground in a series with Vegas who can truly roll four all over again,

The plan for this year.
Thornton does not want to live San Jose, and the Sharks will most definitely be in the running for a playoff spot if not a top team in the west. Going through that division, Vegas is still nasty, but Anaheim is just getting older and they seem to have lost hope, Vancouver is still in tanking mode honestly, Arizona is better but not by much, Kovalchuk doesn't make LA that much better, and McDavid still can't backpack Edmonton the whole way. San Jose will be a top 3 team in that division if not win it so moving Thornton is unlikely. Wayne Simmonds might be that great RW rental option with a low cap-hit for what he is worth now that they have JVR depending on where they're at come Xmas

My take on Florida for next season.
I think Panik is what makes the deal really worth it for Florida.. I just don't think Arizona wants to bring in Yandle unless he is gifted to them on a platter they already have OEL as an elite stud and Hjalmarsson might be the best second pair Dman in the whole league. At this point they're looking for top tier forwards. Is your main goal in this to move Yandle? Because I would look elsewhere to move Yandle to a place that needs a solid middle D and are true cup contenders for him to wave that clause.

I like the trade with Calgary much more. Winnipeg doesn't need to take on a young backup goalie who could potentially be a starter in the league. They would want a proven veteran who can play 15 games while Hellebuyvk gets his rest going into the prime of his career

Florida needs to go out and get a stud. They have some quality contracts where they're at right now and I doubt they'll be able to hold on to this core. Problem is Florida will never be able to land a big guy in free agency and they don't have many draft picks to give away
