You think JT Miller at 29 and one season left before becoming a UFA costs more in a trade than Alex DeBrincant who is coming off a 40-goal season, is 24 and still only an RFA (albeit one with arbitration rights)? If that's the case, that's a hard pass from the Caps.

That's fair. Are you suggesting in addition to all of the above or in lieu of either McMichael or the 1st-round pick? I don't think the Caps give up McMichael, Iorio AND a first rounder. But maybe two of the three.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kalopsia</b></div><div>All I can hope at this point is that it's a smokescreen and they're really planning to "Kucherov" Backstrom. Nick's gotta know that he torpedos the team's chances this year by insisting he'll be back in-season, right? They said after the season that things have to change, they can't just immediately decide to do the exact same thing as last year, right? Ugh.</div></div>
Hopefully it is a smokescreen. But GMBM tends to talk straight and not dance around things. So it does sound like they have to keep that cap space available for Backstrom even though no one has come back from this type of surgery same season (and best I can tell only one player has come back a year later and he didn't even last a full season). If - and it's a big if - they know Backstrom is on LTIR until the end of the season they could go get a JT Miller type player who has one year left on his contract and then assess after the season if Backstrom is coming back or if they can re-sign that center long term. Either way, they are absolutely out of getting major player (Forsberg, Kadri, etc.) on a long-term deal. There's no chance they can commit to that if they have to assume Backstrom's cap hit comes back even if it isn't until next season. It could be a rough year for the Caps this year, which is too bad.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>All_Knowing</b></div><div>No disrespect to you because I believe this is where the Caps are moving towards, but if this is the team the Caps put out, they will be mediocre AT BEST. I love Backy, but I really wish he was going to take the year to rehab. And Hags - great determination to come back and you never like to see injuries, but the dude is waiting until mid August to make a decision. That is $2.75mil just hanging out there a MONTH after free agency. Bad timing.</div></div>
I agree - this is not a good situation for the offseason. Uncertainty about Backstrom's future, but he says he wants to play this season. One guy had to retire after similar surgery. Another came back a year later and couldn't even last a full season. I'm not hopeful. It's unfortunate but with Backstrom's injury, Wilson out probably half the season and Hagelin's contract potentially not headed to LTIR for the full season, GMBM won't be able to do much at all except let the prospects get experience this year. There is definitely a scenario where I see the Caps not being close to a playoff spot come the trade deadline and shipping out expiring contracts or useful pieces before trying to reload next offseason once they have a better grasp of Backstrom's recovery, Wilson's health and get contracts like Eller's off the books.

Appreciate the insight. That makes sense. I could see the Caps waiting until after the big UFA goalies sign and trading either Vanecek or Samsonov for a 2023 pick to a team that misses out on the higher end UFAs.

What I would do
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CastingCouchGuy</b></div><div>ducks fans are seriously overvaluing john gibson wow</div></div>
They really are! I know McDonagh is defense but he has a similar cap hit that has a lot of years left and is declining just like Gibson. And McDonagh just got traded for cap space. They are buying out the NHLer they got in return and I guess a middling prospect. I doubt Gibson is pulling in an A+ prospect, a first-round pick and then an additional pick or prospect. No chance. Especially with multiple potential starters in free agency. I'm thinking Gibson right now is worth either a first-round pick OR a decent prospect, but not all three that seem to be a minimum from Anaheim fans.

If Backstrom retires
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>If Backstrom retires, then the Caps will have recapture fees due to his front loaded contract. If he can stay on LTIR for the next three years, then Caps have his cap space to use.</div></div>
How would the recapture penalty work if he retires? I am not up on all the CBA details but in the back of my head I thought there were only recapture penalties on contracts that were back loaded or the terms were extended way out extra years to lower the cap hit - which under the last CBA were eliminated with the max contract length. I believe if he retires his cap hit just comes off the books. If she stays, it goes to LTIR which they can then exceed the cap by but not accumulate cap space. Him retiring would, I believe, give them much more flexibility but I can't imagine he walks away from the remainder of the money. Unless he retires and the team gives him a "job" within the organization to pay him out that way.
I anticipate he goes on LTIR this year while trying to rehab and either stays on it all three years or retires next summer.

Dubios would be sick
Why do so many people think the Caps would give up Vanecek and a 2nd-round pick for one season of Varly? Even with salary retention, the Islanders would be lucky to get Vanecek - cost controlled for another few years - for one season of Varly.

I don't see Winnipeg trading Hellebuyk, but if they did, that offer would certainly have to get their attention. Personally as a Caps fan, I wouldn't want to see them give up that many futures for a goalie. But it seems like a deal Winnipeg would consider.

Kadri Miller and Grans
Jensen definitely has value. So if the Caps are trading him in order to make another deal for a defenseman or to sign someone, they get back much more than what you have there, in my opinion. They got a pair of seconds for Brendan Dillon last offseason and Jensen makes less, but is better. Though he only has one year left vs. Dillon who had three.

That's what I was thinking. If you're moving miller, Eller could be a good stop-gap and in the last year of his contract, he's easily flippable at the deadline to recoup the draft pick given up for him. Could be a low-cost option

Which is why I gave the caveat they would be interested if they traded one of their top two centers during the offseason. If they traded one of their top two centers for a big haul, Eller would be an add-on to plug a hole for the season.

Capitals Re-Tool
I like the ideas and thoughts, especially factoring in everything the GM said yesterday. That said, I don't see them relying on two young centers everyday in the lineup. I think Lapierre starts in Hershey and they take some of that cap space you have listed and sign a middle-six center that's younger than Eller but has more experience than a rookie. Otherwise, I think everything here seems reasonable in terms of types of talent they might target and where they will look to fill in places. Should be an interesting offseason!

Major changes in the next 72 hours
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>uphere</b></div><div>Oiler fans had such utter disdain for Schultz that he was run out of Edmonton. Although that was a while ago, it would simply be cruel to send him back to the Oilers.</div></div>
I knew it didn't end great for him there but wasn't sure how bad it was. I was trying to figure out another team that's a playoff contender who could use a RHD. I'm sure there are others and would be curious to know what other teams might be interested. I know Vancouver wants to beef up on D but they need to move contracts to do that (coincidentally ex-Capitals Holtby and Schmidt), but Capitals can't take back more salary this year than they send out so I don't think that's an option. Calgary seems to need LHD not RHD. I'm sure there are others that could use someone like Schultz - I thought he'd be a perfect fit for Seattle in the expansion draft as a reasonable cap hit for a top-four offensive defenseman who could easily be moved for picks at the deadline if Seattle wasn't in playoff contention. But I can't figure out what Seattle's plan is at all after the expansion draft unless they are making a run at Landeskog and Hamilton tomorrow.

This is exactly the type of move both teams should do, as a Sabres fan you hit the nail on the head that we want to pick up cap, but not salary and we want to get paid to help your team out.
I wish I had 1 free call to GMKA just to tell him to do this.</div></div>
Thanks! I would say it is unlikely because the Capitals GM hasn't really shown a history of making such moves but it would satisfy a huge relief of cap space for the team that he has to at least consider a move. There are probably other more viable options that return more such as moving Schultz or Kuznetsov but my idea here was a fairly big overhaul of the team. I'd say Schultz or Jensen are more likely trade candidates than Kempny this summer.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>macan</b></div><div>Yeah this is an interesting thought and there's certainly a lot of unfair Kuznetsov bashing on this here website but I don't think MTL parts with Kotkaniemi for a 29-year-old</div></div>
That's fair. I think Kuznetsov's cocaine use issue is not as big as some make it out to be. Yes, it's bad but it happened multiple years ago now and there have been no signs it's still an issue. He got Covid last year and made some dumb decisions that led to getting Covid but Ovechkin broke the same rule and didn't get Covid and no one talks about that. So I'm not terribly concerned a player got Covid because he was hanging out in a teammate's hotel room on the road the first week of the season. Is he worth $7.8 million cap hit in a flat cap? You could argue either way, I think, based on comparable players and his age. I can understand not wanting to give up a younger player and draft picks for someone who is 29.
The Caps won't be trading him unless they get a good return and they only do it if they are in a position to fill the 2C position either through the trade or by signing a free agent. So if Kuznetsov isn't moved by noon Wednesday, the start of free agency, the only way I see him getting traded is if a second-line center comes back for him. I think that's less likely (Rangers perhaps with Strome is the one possibility I could see. Columbus needs a center but don't see what they have to offer back because Domi is not healthy).
I'd be curious what Montreal fans consider a fair deal for Kuznetsov (without salary retention).

Realistic Offseason Perhaps

I completely agree. It is probably a playoff team and a first-round exit. I'm trying to reset by expectations to simply making the playoffs and Ovi scoring a lot of goals along the way. Any wins in the playoffs would be a bonus and a surprise. At least for the next three to four years. Then the fun of a complete rebuild (with a ton of cap space) becomes exciting.
