<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonesryan</b></div><div>That defence is highly overpaid. Only Letang and Schultz are worth their money. Your biggest problem is having $7.25M for your 3rd pairing d pair. Signing Johnson was bad enough, but I have no idea why Rutherford went out and got Gudbranson.

I don't really see a Kessel trade making sense. He's not the problem. The problem is all the money committed to the back end for just average guys. I could see someone like Maatta being moved to free some space up. He's still young enough to have some value, but he lacks the foot speed of a top defensemen. Plus that's over $4M of cap free'd up. Could be a fit in Montreal too. If it's a forward moved, a guy like Rust could be easier to move. Decent production and on a cheaper cap hit than Kessel. Top line guys are hard to move with the cap system these days. Ideally I'm sure Pittsburgh would love to move both and get nearly $8M in cap space and they'd be fine.

It really depends on where Pittsburgh sees their better depth of prospects to fill the holes needed since they'll be on ELC's still. If they see the deeper prospects at forward, then maybe a guy like Rust or Kessel is moved. Or if they see it on defence, I'd look to move a couple of those overpaid dman. With a guy like Pettersson on the back end I'd think it'd be preferable to move one of the bigger contracts on defence. Just my overview of it though</div></div>

For me the defenders to keep are Letang, Dums, Schultz, Rikkola, and Pettersson. Maatta, JJ, and EB could get moved for another 3rd line defender or some bottom six wingers. My concern with the forwards are Kessel, who just seems like he's done here, and Hornqvist. I understand he's a great locker room guy but is that worth $5.3mil to have him on the 4th line?? It just seems like the chemistry of the 2016-2017 SC winners is gone and if so then there is no point in hanging on to guys that are just going to go through the motions on the ice. Time to rebuild on the fly. Cut the fat and get younger and faster.
