that's fair. Don't know much about the Jets needs. Just saw that it seems like Trouba is out and I think the Pens could use him. Also Kessel and Laine could be deadly!

Kessel Trade
Pens say maybe. Would rather get a solid defenseman than 2 centers. Keep Gagner and send a mid 20's defender. Also might need to take JJ or Maatta.

Kessel to Dallas

Honka and Val do not have any value, so essentially its Kessel for Faksa just to get rid of JJ, which is an awful deal for Pittsburgh.</div></div>
Could add a pick or a prospect but I saw this on some Pittsburgh news website that since Minnesota deal got axed, this was another good option.

I don't think they have that kind of speed to be effective on the forecheck. The Pens best guy was Hags. There's just no speed. And it seems to structured.....like everyone has their assigned areas to skate in and the can't leave that zone. No creativity I guess.

For me anyone but 87, 59, 58, and 8 are on the block. Team is too slow and no one has the balls to get in front of the net and take some shots. Hornqvist won't anymore even. That's either a broken system or pansy players.

Next year and the BIG problem
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonesryan</b></div><div>That defence is highly overpaid. Only Letang and Schultz are worth their money. Your biggest problem is having $7.25M for your 3rd pairing d pair. Signing Johnson was bad enough, but I have no idea why Rutherford went out and got Gudbranson.
I don't really see a Kessel trade making sense. He's not the problem. The problem is all the money committed to the back end for just average guys. I could see someone like Maatta being moved to free some space up. He's still young enough to have some value, but he lacks the foot speed of a top defensemen. Plus that's over $4M of cap free'd up. Could be a fit in Montreal too. If it's a forward moved, a guy like Rust could be easier to move. Decent production and on a cheaper cap hit than Kessel. Top line guys are hard to move with the cap system these days. Ideally I'm sure Pittsburgh would love to move both and get nearly $8M in cap space and they'd be fine.
It really depends on where Pittsburgh sees their better depth of prospects to fill the holes needed since they'll be on ELC's still. If they see the deeper prospects at forward, then maybe a guy like Rust or Kessel is moved. Or if they see it on defence, I'd look to move a couple of those overpaid dman. With a guy like Pettersson on the back end I'd think it'd be preferable to move one of the bigger contracts on defence. Just my overview of it though</div></div>
For me the defenders to keep are Letang, Dums, Schultz, Rikkola, and Pettersson. Maatta, JJ, and EB could get moved for another 3rd line defender or some bottom six wingers. My concern with the forwards are Kessel, who just seems like he's done here, and Hornqvist. I understand he's a great locker room guy but is that worth $5.3mil to have him on the 4th line?? It just seems like the chemistry of the 2016-2017 SC winners is gone and if so then there is no point in hanging on to guys that are just going to go through the motions on the ice. Time to rebuild on the fly. Cut the fat and get younger and faster.

Agreed. I like McCann as a 4th line center as well. But Pearson for Hags = bad. Gubranson is horrid and it all started with Crosby begging for Jack Johnson. Better be a great off-season cause this year is going down the toilet I think.

At some point these high salary, non producing players need to get moved somehow. 2019-2020 and beyond Pens look to be like the late 90's Pens

Yea this isn't what I had in mind......depends on what we gave up. Pens needed a Dman with everyone hurt. If this cost a 1st rounder or a young prospect I'm gonna be even more pissed.

At 925K should still make them a two-way contract. That way if someone gets hurt they can come up.
I miss Hags speed and PK. Might be able to sign him and ZAR for less which helps even more.

Like I said.... a different idea for a Rangers trade that I think works better for the Pens. Hayes and Zucc are rentals that will cost the Pens at least a 1st round pick and a prospect or 2. And they're both rentals I think. This is a better solution IMO.

Trades with Carolina and Dallas to make cap room
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pensfan89</b></div><div>The pens also have about 8-10 million in cap space next year btw. Even after the Jake extension. So idk where you got that we only have 1-2 million in cap next year lol</div></div>
You're right.....I did that math after I re-signed guys like Pettersson, Riikola, Sheahan, ZAR and DeSmith......still left like $1-2mil to sign 3 more players including a new 3rd line center (if no trades were made). The point is that cap space is limited to make any improvements for next year. Granted the team is playing well now and should get better when Schultz comes back.
