Leave cap to solve 2C at deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pensman69</b></div><div>There are plenty of quality options available now, rather than gambling on making a solution to your team over halfway through the season. That’s not a smart way to go about running your team. Lots of risk and uncertainty involved with that which is why it won’t happen.</div></div>
I can think of one - Ryan O'Reilly
Who else would you include on the list?

Leave cap to solve 2C at deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pensman69</b></div><div>I mean sure but that’s a pretty sizable gamble to take over the course of the regular season. Would you rather go into the playoffs with a solid team with an already re-built foundation at 2C or spend the house of assets on a $4-5m deadline acquisition and then taking the gamble of whether said player pans out or not.
Option 1 is the smarter and better hockey decision. Give your said 2C a training camp and regular season to play with the team and you are more than likely to see better results.</div></div>
They'd be able to spend more than $5m by the time the deadline roles around. There simply aren't many center options on the market currently, and teams are more likely to commit to a re-build if they are not in playoff position by mid-season. If there were quality options available then I'd tend to agree with you that option #1 is more sound.

Avs 2023-24
Avs aren't trading a cost controlled asset like Newhook for one year of Scheifele. Also, Winnipeg doesn't care about trading within division if they are trying to tank/re-build.

Avs 2023-24
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rob32sjsharks</b></div><div>I guess, I would opt for Pacioretty and Domi over Drouin and Hertl. Keep your picks and could have a better stronger team with a shade more cap (Domi 3 years 4.5 mil Pacioretty 1 year 4 mil after back to back injuries) leaving you 2 mil roughly to roster a full 23 players and stay under the cap so you actually have cap space at the TDL to use.</div></div>
The Avs locker room vetoed Domi at the trade deadline, so we won't be brining him on. Patches is constantly hurt so that's a big risk in itself.

Is available so I think they say no.</div></div>
It's a lot to give up, but it gives the Avs an elite 2c that's signed for their entire cup window. Plus, we'll likely have to trade Girard to re-sign Toews, so we can re-coup some assets there. The following season the cap should go up significantly so you drop Drouin and add Landeskog back in.

Avs 2023-24
I'd prefer Schmaltz for age and contract value. In reality, it's giving up two very late first round picks so they don't hold as much value as two firsts from most other teams - might be an overpay but it means the Avs don't have to give up a prospect given that their cupboards are pretty bare.

He didn't quit on the Avs, he just wanted a larger contract than the Avs were willing to commit to at the time. He also didn't get along with Duchene but it sounds like he wasn't the only one with that issue.

Kadri already turned down a trade to Calgary, that's how he ended up in Colorado. Things could have changed since then but it's not a good sign for Calgary.

It'd be difficult for next year, we'd likely have to trade Girard at that point and replace him with Behrens, but the following year the cap goes up by $15 million.

$11.5 million is a discount. When Crosby sighed, he signed for 13.5% of the salary cap. This Mack deal would be for 13.8% which is extremely similar to the discount Crosby took.

Kadri Back to Colorado

Probably have to move someone else out at that point. Also, Naz to age 37 is tough to swallow. They need a 2C but that contract is going to age poorly.</div></div>
Mack get's Johnson's money, you trade Girard and give that money to Byram, if Newhook plays really well then you either trade him out for cost controlled pieces or trade Kadri. Cap also goes up by 10-15 million in two or three years. You are focusing too much on the money.

JT Miller to Avs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NMAvsFan</b></div><div>Can't see it - they wouldn't be able to keep him with Mac, Byram and Newhook all needing new deals after next season. If you figure $11M for Mac, $4M for Byram and $2M for Newhook then give JTM $9M (and that's probably too low), they only have $5M left to fill out 5 more roster spots unless the cap goes up a lot. I like JTM but I'm not sure the Avs can afford another big contract like that and they shouldn't be in the market for a rental.</div></div>
It's the same amount of money going out as it is coming in. They likely won't be able to re-sign J.T. Miller when the contract is up, but Newhook should be more than ready for 2C duties by then.

Yep, Erik Johnson's $6m comes off the books at that time. We could probably re-sign EJ for $1m or call up Sean Behrens at that point.

I disagree on the Lehkonen front, it gets him to 28 and likely a massive free agent contract. If he's not willing to sign for two years, then he'd take that for one year which would take him to free agency. It's really not that unreasonable.
MacKinnon takes Erik Johnson's money the following year, Byram takes JT Compher's, and Newhook or someone else is likely traded next year (if we have a 2C in Kadri). There's plenty of ways to make it work.

Compher would be a third line LW/C/RW on 90 percent of the teams in the league, if the wings don't take him then there are plenty of others that would. I think you underrate him. He's no superstar but he's a perfectly good bottom 6 NHLer.
