Vegas Golden Knights signed Noah Hanifin (8 Years / $7,350,000 AAV)

Quoting: tasieboy

Will Hronek make more or less than this when he signs?

I am really happy for this deal. As a Canucks fan this is great news as early reports are that Hronek's camp is asking for around $8M. IMO Hanafin is a superior player to Hronek and while Hronek is one year younger, I think the comparable is there.

Quoting: Random2152

This contract is a pretty good example on how tax advantage is much smaller than most people think given his offer in CGY was for 7.5. Like yeah it totally exists but it isnt really anything to get antsy about and claim it to be a massive factor. 0.15M is roughly the gap.

This doesn't make sense. The tax advantage is substantial and much more than $150k.
The difference for Hanifin each year making $7.35M in Vegas vs. Calgary is $640k take home:
Vegas (taxed at 38.9% from https://www.talent.com/tax-calculator?salary=7350000&from=year&region=Nevada): $7.35M -> $4.49M take home
Calgary (taxed at 47.6% from https://ca.talent.com/tax-calculator?salary=7350000&from=year&region=Alberta): $7.35M -> $3.85M take home
If Hanafin stays all 8 years in Vegas, the total take home difference between signing in Vegas vs. Calgary is $5.12M. This would mean Hanafin would have to play over 9 years in Calgary to take home the same earnings as he does in 8 years in Vegas.

Why is it the NHL's fault? Pretty sure they weren't holding a gun to Livingstone's head saying he had to sign with the Preds or else.
Maybe, just maybe he looked at the Canucks right side and saw Hronek, Myers and Bear and realized his path to be a regular NHL next season was a long shot. But let's stay on the conspiracy that the NHL is out to screw the Canucks at every corner.

A full-on offensive defenseman with limited to no defense that gets paid like Hedman feels like a great player to watch, but a headache overall. I hope he fixes his defense (it’s in the position, defenseman), and if he does this deal should look great for Vancouver down the line. For now, though, I would hate to be Demko on a team whose best defensemen are Hughes, Ekman-Larsson, and Myers.

That's an interesting take. You'd rather have the guy who's been drafted to be a sniper, yet scored *checks notes* 3 more goals last season than the defender you'd rather not have.

(ARI/VAN) - Ekman-Larsson, Garland for Beagle, Eriksson, Roussel, 1st, 2nd, 7th
As a diehard Canucks fan, I voted Arizona. Sure this helps the Canucks become a playoff team next year, but with taking on 6 years of OEL at $7M AAV it also closes their ability to improve their roster externally to become a Cup contender as there won't be any cap room.
This was a deal to save JB's job, and squander the future years of progress.
I was originally going to vote "Fair Deal", but saw that the Canucks also added a 2nd and a 7th.

Vancouver Canucks signed Thatcher Demko (5 Years / $5,000,000 AAV)

Quoting: drewjenkins

Kotkaniemi are you pranking us right now?
Here are some recent comparables:
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 25) | after 60 NHL games | career 0.911 SV% | 2.90 GAA | Thatcher Demko
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$1,300,000 x 1 years (age 25) | after 60 NHL games | career 0.911 SV% | 2.90 GAA | Linus Ullmark
$1,500,000 x 3 years (age 24) | after 50 NHL games | career 0.924 SV% | 2.40 GAA | Juuse Saros
$1,600,000 x 2 years (age 26) | after 40 NHL games | career 0.928 SV% | 2.30 GAA | Jack Campbell
$2,400,000 x 2 years (age 24) | after 80 NHL games | career 0.913 SV% | 2.80 GAA | Alex Georgiev
$2,800,000 x 3 years (age 24) | after 70 NHL games | career 0.916 SV% | 2.70 GAA | Mack Blackwood
And here's a guy who actually deserved Demko's contract:
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 25) | after --60 NHL games | career 0.911 SV% | 2.90 GAA | Thatcher Demko
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 28) | after 300 NHL games | career 0.919 SV% | 2.70 GAA | Robin Lehner (career totals)
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 28) | after --80 NHL games | career 0.925 SV% | 2.40 GAA | Robin Lehner (prior 2 years)
Lehner played 5 times more NHL games than Demko has.
Lehner had a FAR better save percentage than Demko has.
Lehner was also a UFA even though he was still quite young.
Pettersson and Hughes are 100% loving this deal, and Benning just lost all his leverage in those negotiations.
And this is just such an unnecessary risk for a goalie with 60 games played, especially for a capped out team.
.

That's a great post. By chance do you have the numbers of how they stack up if you use GSAA?

You don't give out contracts based on what a player did 2 years ago, you base it on what you expect them to do for your team. The 2x$4.5M contract was the "he deserved the money" contract. The dude has been going steadily since. This is the equivalent of Eriksson's contract, but for a goalie.

He thought he would get big money because of the one hot month he had. You're missing that his ego is enormous and he greatly overestimated his own abilities. I assume taking the one-year deal was his own decision as he was acting as his own agent this off-season. Knowing how he turned down a $4.25 x 3 from the Sens in the hopes of someone giving him a $5 x 5 only to get a $1.7 x 1, it would be in his best interest to probably get an agent for next offseason.

You are implying a false correlation between other teams targeting a player and player's size. If anyone is targeted, regardless of size, the vast majority of time their point totals will decrease, unless they're truly an elite player.

Hoglander may be 5'9", but he certainly isn't undersized as he's 190lbs which makes him build like a mini fire hydrant. It sounds like he's an absolute freak in the gym too so that's 190lbs on a guy that's primarily lean muscle.

That's the primary reason why the Canucks traded him. He was always the 7th Dman with them and Benning wanted to give the guy a chance to play regular NHL minutes so traded him to Detroit for an AHLer. I would assume he resigned to continue to play NHL minutes. He's 31, but this could very well be his last NHL contract unless he just re-ups with Detroit every year moving forward.

Also, they save $1.3M in cap space which could've been a factor.
