I didn’t think you were, I might be just numb to nonsense in values we all think each individual is worth over another and whatnot, that is something I have come to expect. After that looking at things that the team just wouldn’t do (regardless if the trade values were more realistic and regardless of the buyout rules).

Subjective choice for a team with the best execution at the Draft: Dallas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Playersoverpayed</b></div><div>So I would say if Dallas would want to win a Cup now, would they trade away their 2022 1st round pick (like some other teams) and possibly also their 2023 1st round pick. So far it look they are OK with mediocrity.</div></div>
I’d prefer what they are doing to gambling away firsts on players in the back half of their useful career (any UFA aged player imo) or rentals for what is still very long odds to win now with Benn and Seguin’s contracts holding them down. They’re good enough to sneak into playoffs right now get some revenue and keep their picks and hopefully hit a few home runs, just the four NHL players out of the 2017 draft and last year 2021 (with some high potential picks taken) is enough to convince me they should keep their picks. It would take a lot for this team to be bad enough to seriously contend for a lottery pick with as bad as other teams are right now so that not ideal either and would completely waste the early careers of the 2017 guys.
Call it mediocrity or call it keeping the business afloat by being a contender to make playoffs and get some postseason $$$, but I’d prefer that to selling the farm to be slightly better and it’s the closest thing to having your cake and eating it too if drafting good players and having a great season.

Drafting to replace a specific player over bpa that fills your depth chart needs? I don’t think you can really do that. If they wanted to replace Klingberg they could trade for an nhl ready if soon to be ready guy or they should have planned for this in advance and been looking for his replacement sooner. In the short term Heiskanen is already the #1 D now he can get a chance at PP1 and more of an offensive role. Harley could potentially be ready (we’ll see how camp goes) to fill that PP2 spot but more likely it’s Suter which I expect to be a less explosive pp unit.
If they drafted Lamereaux, Luneau, Chessly or another righty here it would have been a bigger reach and still as long or longer development track (3 years minimum imo before Bichsel gets a shot at the NHL roster).

Wouldn’t that be nice, although I think I’d rather put that money into RD (maybe even get Klingberg on a shorter term like that now that he’s tested the market). I don’t know if Robertson signs for that when Robert Thomas got more.

I don’t remember the rules but I think Ottawa getting White back (especially since he’s much cheaper after they bought him out) isn’t allowed. I though it was no re-acquiring for at least a year when you buy out a player.

The three way
Ok so I don’t get it, WTF is this? I would think some of that is supposed to head Vegas’s way and was just entered wrong. I’m just very confused there.
As far as the UFA rights for a few days for Klingberg, Raffl, Forsberg and Smith aren’t worth much. Trading UFA negotiations just for each other alone is like swapping 4th round picks, it’s whatever because most of those guys are dead set on talking to more teams. Holtby maybe played 20 games not even I don’t think he played better with a players blocking shots and putting in good defensive effort (even if they still sucked structurally defensively compared to previous years) but he’s looking like a backup with the number if games you can expect out of him if he’s not getting healthy and I think everyone in the league is aware of his issues.
What does Vegas gain from trading their young RFA controllable defensemen since there’s no return listed.
Nashville I don’t see doing this either, it just looks very boneheaded, the deal only gets them first chance at UFA negotiations, and they give up Glass and McCarron for the UFA rights to a defenseman that is chasing a big ticket that likely wants to shop around, a goalie that was injured since the beginning of March and a 3rd liner that is one of many veteran UFA forwards available.

Finding C depth
I’ve liked the idea of a giving up an extra center for Lundkvist for Dallas but you are very heavily gambling on Faksa’s production just being a result of play style and that he could return to strong 3C who can score 15 goals. As a Stars fan I don’t think that’s a good trade for NYR.
I did a trade machine a bit ago proposing a Lundkvist for Dellandrea 1 for 1 hockey trade, 2 2018 first rounders on the cusp of cracking the NHL but face a few roadblocks on their respective rosters and addresses both depth charts (albeit potentially not now as they could both have an argument to be made for sending back to the AHL.

A Perfect Trade
What does Dallas gain giving up their best winger and a 2nd round pick and player that is probably worth a second with his low cap hit? A worse forward than Robertson , a worse pick dropping a second to a third and an over the hill righty D that fills in a 2pair RD role (at best if he doesn’t fall off a cliff) for a few years while the team should be either retooling or at least just holding their cards and waiting and not handcuffing more cap. If they are trying to compete now they don’t essentially trade a 40 goal scorer for two worse players.

Maximum rebuild
For Dallas I would consider that trade I don’t have that same gut wrenching feeling of having to take a mid 30s guy. I don’t know about losing a first plus Dellandrea (2018 1st) being a lot to give up on a second pair guy (albeit a very versatile player). I also don’t know about needing to dump Faksa in the same deal but it’s a good start to negotiate from.
I think Dellandrea is close to NHL ready so that would actually help Winnipeg if the center depth drops off if they do sell off the vets and especially with PLD’s recent sentiment about UFA. They have to hope Perfetti is the real deal.
What about: Dellandrea, Gleason and Damiani (AHL rookie of the year in the 21’ season has good advanced stats but a bit undersized and has a bad year this year so he might not interest as much) for only Pionk nothing additional.

There’s still the option of do nothing and just playing Hanley on the right 3rd pair with Harley and play Hakanpaa with Lindell so he’s less of a liability. or get a low compensation trade RHD like Holl.
I remember when Nill did nothing at the deadline and people lost their minds over the “I like where we’re at” quote. And again in 21 when he tried to sell picking up Vatanen off of waivers as an acquisition. Now that we finally have some good prospects and drafting they’re going to throw it away for a slightly less mediocre team.... So they should be careful what they wish for.

Getting rid of Benn’s contract would be great, but no way he waives his NMC in a way that doesn’t benefit him, his deal is seemingly buyout proof based the the buyout calculator on here.
Debrincat, I would expect to want to go to a real contender. Also not exactly a pressing need for Dallas to give up that much and I wouldn’t give up Johnston and probably don’t want to go to multiple drafts without first round picks (if you haven’t noticed Dallas has a lot of depth issues and trading away your best prospect and 2 top picks to fill one spot isn’t good.

No you’re right, they need to pretend to be a contender to sell jerseys and higher priced tickets and stuff. Though they recently haven’t really bit on these big deals, and they usually don’t trade former first rounders early. Stankoven plays for the owner’s WHL team, and we have a very meddlesome owner. I think that’s the main reason they wanted two second rounders last year so they could take a chance he’d be there in the second and Nill could still grab his stay at home defenseman too early, so as long as he’s doing well I think he’s Gaglardi’s guy, Dellandrea is a mid ceiling high floor gritty centre and management really seem to love those kinda guys here. Who knows I just don’t think JT Miller is in their wishlist either. Probably kicking the tires on Petry, Manson, Murphy whatever short term contract RD options they can find. That’s probably where the cap space is going.

Stars decline, any big additions to the cap are a no go and trading away prospects (not going to “win now”, this team is no where near ready and the old core is done: Benn, Seguin and the three that are gone) instead of having patience is dumb.

Solid relief guy for Oettinger, plus Petry to replace Klingberg, and for MTL to get a pick and a prospect in a cap clearing move is always beneficial</div></div>
Well as a Stars fan the way I look at it is this, no Klingberg, fine no problem Heiskanen gets the first PP unit, Suter will be on the second because he always gets his way they had to play him with Miro because he thinks he’s still a PP guy and he gets his way. Petty would have to share that second unit with Suter further road blocking Harley. Petry is just redundant, a two way or defensive but mobile right is more what we need plus will fit under the cap better.
Oettinger can play the majority of the season don’t really need a great backup or 1B (if Allen).
We are a generally excited about players like Mavrik Bourque and not at all for Petry. The team needs to get younger and more ELCs on the NHL roster to balance the books. Boutique has potential to improve, Petry you just hope he can avoid aging. Petry could easily fall off a cliff play wise, the argument we always hear in Dallas circles about Klingberg’s age “his game will age well he’s not very physical” ha been disproven before, most recently by Keith Yandle.

They are delusional but GMs are known to make bad decisions all the time to try and keep imaginary windows open. Worst part is apparently Petry played college with Bill’s son, we had no chance at avoiding another cap handcuff.
I expect Petry to be here next year, I have the same feeling I had when Suter rumors happened but he’s double the price and not even 20% better, and I know Nill will actually pay. So just hoping no first or former firsts going the other way.

Dallas fan, I’m down to move Gurianov. Don’t want another Nichushkin where we have to pay to get him outta here and get nothing. Barrie fills a need and shorter term and cheaper than Petry (those rumors haven’t cooled off) even though we could probably use more of a two way or defensive guy. The fourth round pick is fine too since Gurianov has kinda sunk his value we’d need to add because only having to commit to two years for Barrie is more valuable.

I hope your right, but everyone seems convinced that Petry is going to Dallas and we’ll be giving up a prospect and our first, along with the fact that some are saying a first and a top prospect. I would think the fact everyone knows he wants out in the worst way gives power to the team taking him off their books? As a fan of the perpetually mediocre Stars, I don’t like the trade for other reasons. Prospects are worth more than guys close to retirement, the myth of the offensive defense aging well was disproven again by Yandle. Either way don’t nobody in Dallas wants want Petry, I don’t even want Klingberg back if he’s getting more than 5 mil a year (he will OFD are always overpaid). Also the draft is one of the few high points in a year where they just continued to get older and more mediocre. As far as Allen/Primeau/the backup guy (Montebeault or however it’s spelled) aren’t worth trading for when free agency is coming up, they can get a UFA backup goalie (or just extend Wedgewood).
That’s a bad trade but at least the Habs get a mid first draft pick.
