trade with columbus plus offer sheet kucherov
C'mon people open you're collective eyes. Columbus is in salary cap trouble, Wennberg will be an RFA next year and Columbus has 65 mil committed to only 15 players for 17-18 season. That will give them about 9mil to spend on 8 roster spots if the cap goes up by 2mil. Wennberg will get a heft raise, leaving them in serious hot water.
The Foligno contract is terrible, he's a one season wonder who cashed in, and is locked in at 5.5mil over the next 5 years. Smith is coming off a 25 goal season and is younger, he may be a one-season wonder too, but he's a solid 3rd line center who makes 1/3 what Foligno does. Sbisa is underrated and still overpaid, but not nearly as bad as Foligno. Or, you know, you can keep paying Foligno 5.5 mil to score 12 goals on the 3rd line.
And for Kucherov, Tampa will be in cap trouble in 17-18, with around 25 mil to spend on 12 roster spots, including Palat, Johnson and Drouin, who should get around 12-16mil between the 3 of them. Depending on what they do with Killorn, Nesterov and Namestnikov this yer, if they want to keep Drouin, Palat and Johnson, they might be happy to get a 1st and 3rd for Kucherov, or risk losing Drouin next year. The offer sheet on Kucherov might just make Drouin a FA next year.

Offer sheets
Here's how. After signing Stamkos the bolts are still fine for cap space this year, but next year, will have to pay Drouin and Hedman, who are both due for about 3mil raises at least. Drouin is coming off his rookie contract, he can expect the quadruple that. Hedman is only making 4mil this year. If they match on Kucherov at 5mil+, they can kiss one of Drouin or Hedman goodbye next year. My bet is that they want to keep the other two over Kucherov, and will be happy to get the 1st and 3rd for him.
If the blues match on Schwartz, they will have about 7 mil to spend in 17-18 on Parayko coming off a rooke contract (3 million raise?), Shattenkirk looking for a couple mil raise, Bortuzzo, Bergland and Steen all looking for raises. If the cap doesn't go up enough, they could be in trouble.
The canucks have to look at what teams will be in trouble next year this time if they sign big contracts now...
only issue is whether the canucks are allowed to sign two players to offer sheets in the same price range... it seems the rules say the compensation is in the next years draft, and signing both of them would mean losing picks in 17 and 18... that could probably be circumvented somehow

Compher is an upgrade on granlund, it's part of the paying for moving up to 5th. Granlund has been playing wing and center

stamkos goes west
I dont really care where Sutter goes, just trade him for a mid 1st rounder. And give Stamkos 15 years, its all about the cap hit... I would bet this is a playoff team wthtout giving up the future
If salary has to be retained on Miller, I'd ask for a 3 rounder and then probably buyout Burows

If Benning were a little smarter...
Why trade for Barrie's rights, when you can put in an offer sheet for him since he's an RFA? Sign him for less than 5.5 million per on a long term deal and he would only cost the canucks a 1st and a 3rd

Making a Contender
I don't know how Oilers fans can rate a team's defence when they've never seen a team with a defence.
I'd rather keep Hansen, move Granlund to the LW, move Sutter to the middle, and send Etem packing.

Just another one
Wideman is a veteran d-man with a few years left, and he had 56 points 1 year ago. Nugent-Hopkins is on his way out of Edm as he won't like playing 3rd line minutes. Phoenix will pay big for hometown kid Matthews, and I'm not the only one who thinks so ( http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/take-coyotes-land-auston-matthews/ ) . A canucks 2nd rounder and an Arizona 1st rounder might be only 10 picks apart next year, although I admit the picks may have to be swapped (canucks 1st rounder for Arizona 2nd rounder)

bigger tougher younger better
Initially had Matthias and Higgins straight up for Foligno and 31st pick... forgot to add Markstrom, buffalo wants a goalie and could use some veteran wingers to go with all their young centres... Tanev is better offensively than Gudbransson, but is soft and has only gotten marginally better since he joined the league. Tanev is better suited to the East, and is worth giving up to move up to the top 15 in the draft. Edmonton is shopping Draisaitl, and Shinkaruk still has high value, and throwing in Clendiening will help Edmonton's defence problems.
Vey is useless.
