I just can't see Hoffman playing good enough to get a 3rd, let alone a 2nd. I don't think he will reach 40 points. Going by the fans on this site, no one wants Labanc, and very few will even give you a 4th for him half retained. Like Hoffman, I don't see Labanc putting up 40 points either. So I just don't see them as the best use for that last retention slot. I do however agree that Duclair and Barabanov could fetch a 2nd at the TDL market. I'm thinking that if both hit the 50-60 point mark, that they could fetch a late 1st from a contender at the TDL. Especially if one of them is half retained for a super cap strapped team that's going all in. I think those two are the most realistic players to have good years, and therefor be the best TDL chips to retain on.

Mantha with half retained would have roughly neutral value. So you could trade him for a 2-3 mil cap dump player with one year in their contract. I doubt any team would give you more than a 5th for him, if that. Ferraro would be around a 2nd in value, maybe a 3rd and 4th.

As a Shorks fan, this deal is way too lopsided in our favor. With that said, this trade would be using up our last retention slot, so we would need a 2nd minimum to use up that last spot. Otherwise we would us that slot on a trade that got us a 2nd or 1st at the TDL.

I don't think Drury is worth a 3rd. He looks like a career 4th liner who will have a hard time hitting the 200 game mark.

Cap space only matters when it's your own team. The same goes for the contract limit, retention slots, retaining salary and number of LHD.

Couture
There seems to be a excessive lack of awareness about teams retention slots on this site. Not a single team in the NHL have used up all their retention slots, and only two have used up two spots. They keep the third spot open for a reason. And that reason isn't to use it on a contract with 4 years left on it. With that said Couture wants to play out his contract in SJ.

SJ isn't going to use their last retention slot on Granlund. They will keep it open for contracts with one year left on them, and use it at the TDL. I'm not sure why SJ would want this trade, it does nothing for them but waste a high draft pick. We already have enough players to trade at the TDL, we don't need more. Beauvillier and Myers have negative value, I'm not sure what you mean by trade them for assets. That's a lot of cap hit to trade at the TDL. I would suggest trading them to ANA and CHI, teams with cap space, instead to forcing a trade with SJ, putting them right up against the cap limit. Maybe trade Myers + a 2nd to ANA for future considerations, and Beauvillier + a 3rd to ANA for future considerations. Otherwise if the price is too high, just wait and let them walk.

LOL, yeah the team looks horrific, but it's all about perspective. If you look at the team from a tanking point of view, we look quite built. I feel like SJ are playing money puck right now with all these ''what if'' players. As long as we keep our promising talents in the AHL, far away from this cesspool, I'm all for it.

That's true, I think with a good season either Barabanov or Duclair would be the best targets for that last slot.

Sharks TDL sell-offs
No one wants Labanc, and no one will give a 2nd for him. He has negative value, and even retaining half his cap hit, he only becomes neutral value. We will have to let him walk or retain half and hope some team offers a 7th for him. The rest of the values look good though. Maybe a little low depending on their seasons and if we retain. I could see Barabanov with a 50-60 point season at half retention getting a late 1st, same with Duclair.

Well I like the confidence. SJS decline. That 2nd NJD pick can turn into a 1st. Besides that fact, SJ is rebuilding and don't want to give up high draft picks for a 29 year old mediocre d-man who doesn't fit into a rebuild. We also have ZERO need or want for LHD who aren't top pair caliber. Top finish off I don't know much about Kuluk, but he looks like he is worth a 3rd at most.

Maybe not. I was thinking more around the lines of trade deadline with possible retention. A 50-60 point forward at 1.25 mil for one year at the trade deadline is valuable to a team that wants a cup. A late 1st for that kind of asset seems reasonable to me.

I'll agree to disagree. NYI paid a 2nd to move Bailey's 5mil cap hit for one year who doesn't have a NTC. Good luck finding a trade partner for Myers. It seems no one wants him on this site, and all Nucks fans want to get rid of him. Seems like he'll be easy to trade and his value is positive indeed.

You're not great at math are you. SJS took on 2.25 mil in cap with the Karlsson trade. SJ currently have less than 4 mil in cap space. Why would they use that wiggle room to take on your burden for nothing. I would guess a 1st or 2nd is about right to move Myers without cap retention.

I could see them all getting a 1st. Hoglander gets maybe a 2nd since he is yet to show his value. He is young, on a good contract, and looks promising, so probably a 1st.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AStovetop</b></div><div>- Lmao Hill wasn't very good and the Sharks had 3 goaltenders. They had to move one out and Reimer was the vet to help Kahk. He was Vegas's 3rd (debatably 4th) string Goalie. I'm surprised we got ANYTHING back for him. If you said you knew he was going to backstop a cup winning team, you're a straight up liar.
- Remind me where Balcers played last year? I'll admit I liked him but when every GM doesn't want him, that's where defer to the people who know much better than me (and his buyout is 300k lol, we have 5 mil+ in cap space with an EK trade looming)
Some fantastic Grier moves:
- He literally restocked the Sharsk entire defense prospect pool in one season. That's bringing in Shakir, Thrun, Pulli, Okhotiuk (not to mention drafting Havelid, Cagnoni, Pohlkamp +)
- Got Jacob Peterson for Reedy (lol)
- Got Duclair for an 4th liner/AHLer and a 4th
- Actually committed to getting a top draft pick in Will Smith (securing a future top Center)
- Traded Timo for = top pairing D-man and middle pairing shutdown d-man prospects (mentioned above), a young middle six forward with top six potential, a First (Musty already looks like a steal), and another potential 1st
- Picked up a top five pick from 5 years ago on a no-risk 1 mil prove-it deal (Zadina)
And since people love to bring up the Burns trade - Burns was a mediocre at best player when traded - Lost the trade a bit at the time and honestly, depending on what they get for Duclair at the deadline, may turn out to be fair/win (since Lorentz was dealt for Burns) + Makiniemi has starting/tandem potential</div></div>
That's a lot of teal tinted optimism. Those are wild ceilings you are putting on those players. I would actually put the Burns trade in the win column for Grier, even though we got nothing in return. Balcers played for TBL and FLA last year, what's your point? Hill ended the season top 15. There is a reason why you don't trade with your rival and try to trade out of conference. It looks like you can't admit trading Hill to the VGN was a blunder. Most of what you said I disagree with, but I do agree Burns was a good move.

How do you feel about him trading Hill to VGN? I'd love to hear your praise for that blunder. Without it Vegas doesn't win the cup. I seriously can't name one good trade Grier has done. His first move was to buy out Balcers who had one year left on his contract. He put up 23 points for 1.5mil. We are still paying his buy out penalty. What a great move! The best thing he has done is not give out big dumb contracts with no movement clauses on them. Not signing Meier was his best move so far. You say he has ''done so much'', name three of his best moves. Do they out way his three worst moves?
