3rd pairing Dman making more than 4M?
Ilya Sorokin is the only goalie since 2019 to sign for more than 8M. I dont see Hellebuyck getting any more than that in the back half of his career.

Heinen
I don't see a real down side of seeing Danton Heinen in this lineup, if one of the younger guys out plays him he can always be sent down. But overall he is responsibly defensively and you know what you're getting with him.
Trent Frederic getting a look on the second line is something I would like to see, I think he has more upside then people give him credit for. He has a sneaky good shot!
Personally would like to see them try:
Marchand - Coyle - Debrusk
Frederic - Zacha - Pasta
JVR - Geekie - Heinen
Lucic - Boqvist - Greer

Bertuzzi arb case helped. 3.5.
I just don’t see them getting him under 3. Especially when he wants long term and 5+</div></div>
Debrusk is better than Greenway, hardly better than Mangiapane, and not as good as Olofsson. You look at those three and he falls at roughly 2.8 which is where I think he is valued. Labanc got 4.8 after taking team friendly second contract. Bertuzzi is significantly better than Debrusk and still only has 3.5.
Debrusk wanted long term and 5+ years while the money in the league was good, salary cap was going up, that is never happening now, he will take a 1 or 2 year deal at roughly 3M

final piece from MTL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>math731</b></div><div>If its such a win for MTL, why would you make this trade as COL? MTL isnt doing that. Target another player or change your offer. Seriously, telling that Zadorov is a first pair d just show how delusional you are</div></div>
First of all I'm a Bruins fan if I was at Avs fan I would not want this deal to go through. The only reason I would is because They cant protect 4 defenseman in the expansion draft which is why they have been rumored too be moving Zadorov. If you can read, I said he is a top 4 defenseman and has the ability to become a top pairing shut down guy.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OkBoomer</b></div><div>We would never take that because we have Romanov, Mete, Chiarot and Kulak all battling for a spot on the left side right now and Harris, Norlinder, Struble, etc. all making the jump very soon. As for the right side, Weber, Petry, Fleury, Marchenko probably, etc. battling and Brook, Juulsen, waiting. The first is a low first round pick which is a hit or miss so I don't think MTL would even consider the move.</div></div>
As for the people competing for spots none of them will be top 4 ready in the next year, probably 2. Zadorov can step in now and will make Montreal much more competitive.

If Goaltending is an issue
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>First of all, the roster balance. Skjei and Fleury are both LD, Carolina have literally 600 of these. From Slavin, Gardiner, Skjei, Fleury, Bean, etc, this just opens up space. The value back may be a little off, but the idea for Carolina was more to open the door for Bean who has been the AHL's best D man by some margin this year</div></div>
But right now Carolina's position of strength is their defense. I don't see them deteriorating that just to make space for one guy to come up from the AHL. Like you said they have a log jam on the left side. That is much better than having a guy get injured with no one to replace them. If there going to make a trade from their defense it will be to trade from a position of strength to fill a position of weakness, whether that would be goaltending or an upgrade to their forward group. But trading a defenseman for a pick and mediocre prospect is not worth it for the right now. It would make more sense for them to trade Fleury for Cayden Primeau and a 2nd or 3rd, at least Primeau is possibly an NHL ready goalie and could be a strong starter in the league down the road.

I really hope you don't think Zadorov is a bottom pair guy. He is at least a top 4 defenseman right now and with his size and physicality will be a great top pair shut down defenseman for years. He is only 24 besides. Montreal would be stupid not to take that trade.

Realistic approach to this. Contracts are pretty good IMO. Leafs might have to add a middle pick there to get that kind of salary retained, but overall pretty good!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Salzy</b></div><div>I'd rather remove the 2nd and add Liljegren in then balance accordingly for that potential deal, very interesting concept to be sure
Agree with you on Liljegren, not every Dman can be Calar Makar/Quinn Hughes, some take time and are still very solid players. I feel Marner makes the most sense to move of the big contracts, Tavares just got the C and a franchise like TOR doesn't give a guy the C if he isnt in the long term plans, and Matthews is Matthews. In my eyes Nylander is proving to be worth every penny he got if not more (not sure of the sentiment in Leaf Land though)</div></div>
I agree with you if the Leafs can somehow make the cap work, I would much rather move Liljegren and a 2nd for Manson. Which I also agree is fair. I do agree Liljegren is a good prospect, I just don't like how it was used that he may be in the NHL before Manson to somehow say Manson is less valuable LOL.
But the Leafs have a very interesting cap situation to say the least. You don't Move what could be arguably the best if not one of the best 1-2 punches in the league center wise. Nylanders contract is fair. Marner priced himself out of Toronto IMO. Plus he will give you the biggest return.

Lily for Manson
Imo leafs add a second and its done (if just Lily and manson involved)
Then you have Marner for Rakell + ND
Which is an absolute fleece for the Ducks even with Cap space being considered thye take that and run as far away from Dubas as possible before he can reconsider</div></div>
IMO Marner + 2nd would for Rackell + Manson + Deslaurier would get it done. IMO Marner has to be value as a top 10 RW in the league that is still only 22 years old. Marner makes the ducks a better team Manson + Rackell makes the Leafs a better team fair trade overall IMO.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vr1995</b></div><div>manson was an AHL d until he was 24 years old, and liljegren will be in the NHL at 21, you know nothing, give it up</div></div>
Liljegren will be 21 in 28 days. Go to bed out of it. The only reason he would be a NHL defenseman is because the Leafs defense is horrible.
Moral of the story, the leafs will need to trade one of the big 3 10M + players they have eventually. With the salary cap in place teams cannot compete with 3 10M+ pieces in their lineup. 30M devoted to 3 players is unreasonable, especially when neither of them is your most important player. Just like the Blackhawks with Buff, Leddy, Ladd, ect. they moved on and replaced with assets and 'Lesser' places to stay deep and competitive through their 3 cups. and notice when they gave Toews and Kane 10.5M they dropped out of contention.

I was just thinking value wise, didn't really think about what the Ducks would want. But IMO the value of Kerfoot, Dermott and a 2nd would easily get that deal done. If they don't want that because of their RHD situation maybe it will take Liljegren but I think the value is there with Dermott Kerfoot and a 3rd/4th for Manson

I agree one of Dermott or Kerfoot should/may have to be sent to Ducks for Manson.....I said that in my description.....the reason I did not do it as part of the trade was because I did not know if I would be able to fit them in someone or if they could be used as part of another trade...….The Nylander deal was made simply to shed a bit of cap from Engvall….who has not really produced since he got the new contract.....I am no expert on what Nylander is doing or worth but fans seem to think it would be fun to have the brothers together here...he's been traded twice already....I think him and Engvall are close with Engvall being bigger....perhaps a pick is included or again if Kerfoot is send to Ducks then Dermott gets sent to Hawks with Engvall</div></div>
I think Liljegren could be retained and send Dermot to the ducks might have to include Kerfoot in that as well. But I think Engvall and a 2nd or Engvall and 3,4th would get it done!

You are right about that, goals get more than assists, defensive play gets paid less, but you didn't mention Playoff scoring, and playoff wins, players always get paid more after winning the cup which is exactly what Chicago did that year. Unlike Matthews and Marner, Kane and Toews are always one of the best when it comes to playoff production which also should have them aid more. Matthews and Marner have been silent against the Bruins. Like it or not they are perfect comparables for Matthews and Marner but that couple of million you speak off comes out to be roughly 4.5M and that is the cap space Toronto could use to attain a top 4 defenseman to eat minutes and kill penalties, or a middle 6 forward that can kill penalties.
The point here is that sure these contracts can be given out, but similar to Crosby and Malkin they won't compete until the cap space is there to put key role players around them. So they can fully give out the contracts but expect another 5 years of losing before they can afford the pieces they need to compete in the playoffs. Not to mention they better hope they don't lose everything they've built in Reilly, Andersson and other players around them. Because right now they don't have the cap space for those expiring contracts.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>except none of this matters because you pay a player based on what they did before they signed the contract. Kane and Toews were high 60ish point players and signed before they broke out huge. Same with Kopitar and lots of the other top tier guys. Matthews had already scored 40 goals (and 2 seasons on pace for more) and marner was coming off a 97 point season. Toews and Kane didnt wait for their better contracts, they just exploded in a far more convenient time for the team.</div></div>
Even Doughty and Kopitar had 59pts and 77pts respectively before signing their second contracts of 7M and 6.8M respectively. Not as good as what Chicago did with Kane and Toews but still good contracts.
