Intersting Marner trade from a Leafs fan - impact
The only thing is this doesnt make the leafs any tougher to play against.

I just don’t see the leafs moving that 1st (we only have 3 draft picks, including this one, in 2023) unless it’s for a seriously impactful player. I like deangelo and he’d be a good compliment to Mo, but he doesn’t fit the (my) criteria so no from me

I just think he would be the type of player who isn't a first pair talent but could be a good fit to play with Morgan. At a cheap cap hit. There really aren't too many RD options that fit without major changes.</div></div>
There are still Winnipeg fans out there?

You are 100% accurate. He isnt a top pair D but he is a great complement for an 'offensive dman' and can turn them into top pair D. He has turned Josh Morrissey from a 4/5D making over 6M for 8 years to a legit top pair D. DeMelo is one of the most underrated dmen in the league. He elevates his partner's game, and he would do just that with Rielly. Great on the PK and is just so sound defensively at 5v5. Plus he had a breakout year offensively. There is a lot to like about DeMelo and at the deadline, the Jets could easily get a 1st for him.

Overpay for 1 year deals
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mferraro</b></div><div>This isn't an overpay for ROR at 1 year. The guy is looking at probably 10-15m over 2-3 years on the contract he's about to get from someone. This contract is only 6m dollars. Why would he risk potentially 5-10m dollars on a 1 year deal?
This is likely his last contract and if I was him a 1 year term is a non starter unless the money is a lot more than he will get AAV over 2-3 years.</div></div>
I would say he's probably looking for 25-30 but likely has to settle for 15-20M.
<a href="/users/GarthBrooks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@GarthBrooks</a>, I don't understand the premise of Toronto having to overpay guys on 1-year deals. Anyone signing a 1-year deal in Toronto is doing it on a discount. The guys that they might have to "overpay" are players looking for multi-years by 1M or so on top of the UFA premium. Maybe 2M for a guy who doesn't want to play in Toronto originally on a multi-year deal.
Wood at 4Mx1 makes the Leafs look like they are the Blackhawks in a rebuild.

Keep Brodie. And Bert has won exactly nothing! In fact he was part of arguably the worse choke job of the past decade; record setting reg season to crash out in 1st round to lowest seeded team. Get real with yourself

Marner Trade

Toronto fans say he's so good he improves the players around him, yet his 3 best seasons go hand in hand with a 40 goal season from Tavares, a 60 goal season from Matthews, and this last year where it was the first time he proved he could put up numbers like that without getting carried, and he has not shown any reason to believe it's sustainable...</div></div>
Marner immediately becomes by far the best offensive weapon on his team in Carolina. I understand not wanting to give up Necas with Pesce for value purposes, but to compare Marner's offensive skill with anyone on Carolina is completely disingenuous. Svechnikov is a better finisher for sure but overall offensive aptitude he's not close. Neither is Aho.

But to be fair, Marner can fix goal scoring problems even if he isn't the one potting them. He is more than just a playmaker he puts goals on other people's sticks by force. Constantly amazed how he puts free goals on players sticks. Aho is clearing 50 goals playing with this guy no problem.
If there was a stat that was more than a primary assist this guy would lead in it lmao, but I do understand where you are coming from.</div></div>

No arguing with canes fans 😂; Marner - two time first team all star, just below back to back 100 point seasons, at or near top of primary assists past few years, at or near top of takeaways past few years, selke nominee - is carried by his team mates.
No problem if you don’t like the trade (I don’t like it from leafs perspective) and argue he gets paid too much but trying to seriously state Marner is not elite - you just make yourself look of questionable judgement

Gee,I don 't like those deals for the Leafs. LHD are easy to find, without giving up anything and the Leafs have three already.
Mangiapane is nice but nothing special. and certainly the Leafs should be keeping 1.4m, 18 minutes a night RHD Liljgren with three years of control over two years of Mango.
Hanifan and Nylander might be a fair trade, but geez Leafs need goal scoring.

We have more than enough space to make this work. However, NSH is notorious for not retaining on anyone. I wonder if that’ll change under Trotz though.
I’d be looking at getting a decent piece back for him here though. I proposed trading the 2023 BOS 1st for McDonagh (retained) and a 2nd a few week ago. I wonder if something similar could work here

Lots of homers on this site. Few understand what Nylander evolved into last year. 27, 40 goals, 87 points, played hard on the puck and was the Leafs best player many nights. Also, played very well in the playoffs.
