Soft Rebuild
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Weegar's contract is excellent, Calgary will get at minimum 5 good years out of that deal, probably more as the cap will be over 100M by then. He is also unlike Nylander, already signed to a deal making him the more valuable asset alone. You are a Carolina fan you should understand exactly how this feels with all Pesce for Nylander threads on here except Weegar is much closer to Slavin than he is to Pesce. Also the odds of him re-signing are not remotely as high as you seem to think they are, he was born in Calgary but didn't even live there until he was 3. He has pretty much zero connection to the city at all.
Again the Lindholm for Wright trade is going to be declined by Seattle, it's really not different from the Nylander trade. Players 1 year from UFA have value but not that much value. Also your logic is super flawed, you mention how loosing Lindholm makes the team worse but all the players you added to the team (Roslovic, Nylander, Konecny) are UFA's within the next 2 years and in their prime. Why would they ever wait around for the team to "maybe get there eventually" when they can go to a team with a much higher chance of success now?
Pelletier, Dube, 16th OA in a stacked draft, and a 2nd. That's a lot of futures under lots of team control to loose. And going back to my previous point it only emphasizes it more. If anything youve built the perfect recipe to give Montreal the best possible pick they can get from the Monahan trade</div></div>
If Slavin and Burns were the same age as Hanifin and Anderson I’d probably trade Pesce for Nylander. But I understand why you value him so highly. And even if Nylander doesn’t have a huge connection Calgary is still a great hockey market and at least he’s not American.
Backlund and Toffoli are also UFAs and Konecy and Nylander are big upgrades short and long term. Roslovic can be replaced by Zary if he doesn’t resign. And if you nix the Lindholm trade I don’t think you even take a step back.
Downgrade from Weegar to Boqvist is big but you’d still have a very good young defense. But upgrading from Pelletier, Backlund, Toffoli, Dube to Nylander, Konecy, Roslovic seems worth a mid first and a couple seconds to me.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Seattle isn't dealing Wright for a guy with 1 year of term
Toronto trade is brutally lopsided in their favor
Flames should not be adding picks to trades if they are selling, nor should they be buying in general
Overall this team is much worse, now has significantly less future, and lacks direction even more</div></div>
Weegar is a great dman and would be a perfect fit for Toronto but his contract probably won’t age well. Pelletier has pedigree but is still unproven. Calgary is getting back a ppg 40g scorer in his prime and also a guy who is more likely than other stars to resign.
Losing Lindholm makes you worse in the short term unless Wright pops immediately but you’ve added 2 near ppg forwards and a future 1C. Defense is still solid but significantly younger. Not sure how the future is worse. You’ve traded Lindholm (28), Backlund (34), Toffolli (31), Weegar (29) for Wright (19), Nylander (27), Konecy (26), Boqvist (22) at the cost of Pelletier and a first. If ownership is dictating that Flames remain competitive taking a small step back but getting much younger and adding more upside is a decent plan.

He definitely could want to test the market but I don’t think it’s that crazy to think he’d extend. Penguins (assuming a few moves) are still a good team and generally regarded as a good organization. He’d probably play top pair with a hall of famer. They’ve got a good amount of space to pay him what he wants. And you’d presumably feel him out before making the trade.

Nylander to Hurricanes
Assuming Nylander would be open to extending Canes would 100% take on one year of Murray to acquire him. Our front office has been trying to get their hands on him for years and we have plenty of cap space even with guys re-signed. Could probably even change the second to a first and add a prospect.

Your comment about not re-signing makes no sense to me in this context. Nobody here is remotely worried about Marner walking (in 2 years btw); Matthew’s maybe but he just said publicly he loves it here and wants to stay 🤷🏻. Just NO way - imo - leafs would ever consider moving Marner unless a superstar was coming back. And on the canes roster - only Aho or Slavin + are close to superstar level. Don’t see a fit despite the so called rumours</div></div>
Didn’t mean to suggest Marner would want out, just that if he was on the block for some reason I’d consider futures. But I get it. If we had a player like Marner I wouldn’t give him up easily.

I really have no idea why you think the Leafs would make themselves a worse team by making a trade like this? For cap space 🤯? Contending teams don’t often move it superstars for cap space…</div></div>
If Aho told us he wouldn’t re-sign then I’d accept a similar package. Necas, Jarvis, Svechnikov, Kotkaniemi are all U24 so we’re in a bit of a different spot than you guys.
But I understand why you’d prefer more of a hockey trade for Marner. The thinking was that trading Marner would allow you flexibility to build a more balanced line up with a healthier salary distribution. For arguments sake, you could keep Necas, trade the picks Morrow and Drury for a guy like Weegar then use the extra space to sign Bertuzzi. Maybe a bit unrealistic but you could lineup something like this.
Bertuzzi Matthews Nylander
Knies Tavares Necas
Bunting O’Rielly Acciari
Jarnkrok Holmberg Lafferty
Rielly Weegar
Brodie Liljegren
McCabe Timmins

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>I completely agree with almost everything you've said here. I don't know Drury is a 4C on a contender, I could see him on the 3rd line wing of a lot of teams.
Svechnikov and Pacioretty would have helped, but even with Svechnikov this offense wasn't high-flying. Carolina won 2 games with Pacioretty active, he was hurt in both games and didn't see the final whistle. Don't exactly think he's making the difference. Goal scoring is the biggest issue. You can't tell me that a guy coming down with an elite shot isn't going to change this team a ton. It will at least make the powerplay better than mediocre at best. Someone like Kyle Connor is going to be a better fit for that reason. That said, there's a reason I'm not completely against Marner and that is for everything you mentioned. He's good enough defensively to fit Rod's system, albeit he shouldn't be a Selke candidate, he's a gifted skater, and he is talented. I'm against moving for Marner at the cost of Necas (75% production, 25% of the cost) Pesce, or other roster players to make it fit. I think Marner is overvalued, that doesn't mean I don't think there's a very usable player there. In Carolina he's not putting up 99 points, I fear he would struggle to make the 60 mark to be completely honest because this team doesn't have Auston Matthews on it, but he's an upgrade on someone like Teravainen.</div></div>
Yea it’s a fair argument but I do think we need to diversify how we create chances in addition to adding more goal scoring. I’d love Connor but he’s a lot worse defensively than Marner. I also wouldn’t give up Pesce (him and Slavin should retire Canes) but Necas is the only significant roster piece in the deal. I think it’d be worth it but honestly if you switched Marner with Necas and we kept our assets I think this lineup is still better, younger, faster and more skilled than last year and will continue to improve.

Marner also plays on Matthews wing. Those totals tend to be increased playing next to one of the greatest goal scorers in the NHL. He doesn't make the Canes a better when he costs roster pieces IMO. If it's futures, different debate. If it's things like Necas, Morrow, Drury, I just don't see it.</div></div>
Disagree. We don’t know whether Morrow will improve his defense enough to be an impact player and he’s at least 2 years away. Drury is most likely a 4C on a contender. Necas is valuable and has a lot of potential but his underlying numbers and overall game aren’t close to Marner’s. I’m also not sure goal scoring is our biggest/only problem. Svech and Patches would for sure have been a big help. But our offense can still become pretty one dimensional at times and overly reliant on north south movement, point shots, rebounds etc. Adding a superstar playmaker like Marner could really help us create more high quality chances that can beat even elite goalies. I agree he’s not necessarily a Selke level defensive player but he’s definitely good enough to fit in Rod’s system. You can debate Aho and Marner but we need to give Aho more guys on his level if we want to get over the hump.

Like get a grip - why would the Leafs do that? Are Canes looking to move Aho for draft picks + prospects 🤯?</div></div>
Necas had 71 pts this year. He’s 2 years younger, makes less than a third of what Marner makes and could also be a potential long term 2C for you. The thought was that you would flip the other assets in separate deals and could use the 8 million in cap space to improve your roster. I’d give up more value if necessary but Marner’s contract situation limits his value imo.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SKWPG</b></div><div>Alright... as a WPG born, WPG Jets fan for life who watches almost every game (pretty busy guy, so not easy to watch all), I can tell you that Scheifele "can" play defense / 200 foot game. The people who say he can't, don't watch Jets games. This is the honest truth. "WHEN" he plays a complete game, he's freaking deadly. He's fast, big, strong and has SO much skill. He could easily be a top 20 / 25 player in the league every year if he would play a complete game. But, he doesn't. No one really knows why. If Brindamour could figure it out and unlock that mystery, the Canes would win this trade. If not, he can still play wing as well as center, is fast and can score VERY well.</div></div>
I think a fresh start on a contender could be good for him. And I’d be optimistic about Brind’Amour getting through to him as a former player and great centerman himself. And the ideal version of Schiefele sounds like a great fit and exactly what we need to take our game to the next level. I’d take the gamble.

I would think skinner would cost multiple firsts to dump. Think sabres will have to just try to juice up his stats and ride it out for at least a couple years. And if they’re going into another rebuild there’s not much opportunity cost anyways in keeping skinners contract. Giving up high picks just to clear cap wouldn’t be worth it.

I think this trade makes a lot of sense in the off-season if we lose Hamilton. Dumba would be a great replacement and partner for Slavin. Dougie’s contract could get real ugly at the back end given he wants Pietro money
