Description
Eriksson's contract was front loaded, so his cap hit is much higher than his actual out of pocket cash costs. This makes him attractive to the poorer teams who need to rid themselves of actual cash burn contracts....like Columbus with Dubinsky.

Need to move some other salary. New Jersey has a requirement for RW and D-men. They have a glut of draft picks and could pick up JV for a 3rd, but will have to take Jordie Benn too. Canucks could take back $500k if necessary.

1.
VAN
  1. Dubinsky, Brandon
Additional Details:
Dubinsky's actual cash cost is $5.85M
CBJ
  1. Eriksson, Loui ($1,250,000 retained)
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (VAN)
  3. 2022 5th round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
With Van retaining $2.5M over two years, Loui costs only $2.5M over two years. Columbus (a poor team) saves $3.35M in actual money. Dubinsky and Eriksson have similar career deterioration, and are similarly useless.

Add a draft pick because there is a second year in Eriksson's contract.

  1. 2022 3rd round pick (NJD)

Yes that trade saves Columbus money for 1 year, if you weren’t wrong. Dubinsky is LTIRetired and his contract is fully insured.... meaning Columbus pays him nothing.

NJD has deeper pockets than VAN...

And Dubinsky is likely covered by insurance (which travels with the contract). So its likely the cash expense is a fraction of what you see here.

Sorry, wasn't referring to NJ as the poor team.
