Description
The Islanders are aggressively mediocre this year, after being aggressively mediocre last year, and are firmly on the playoff bubble this year. I'm not saying they should tear it all down (it's pretty impossible to do that with the contracts on this team) but there are players they can move that could get them some decent assets back to help rebuild a farm system that's consistently been ranked in the bottom quarter of the league. For each trade I'll try and justify the need and offer a comp that shows where I'm pulling that value from.

Lines are based on everyone being healthy, obviously. Skarek is a little iffy to me as Sorokin's backup, but honestly this team can still stick around the playoff bubble - something I'd consider a win-win in a retooling year.
Trades
1.
NYI
  1. Forsmark, Simon [Reserve List]
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
COMP: Josh Manson deal from last year's deadline. Avs sent a 2nd rounder and Drew Helleson, regarded as a B/B+ prospect. Forsmark fits that description.
CAR
  1. Mayfield, Scott ($725,000 retained)
Additional Details:
NEED: Hurricanes have been getting next to nothing out of the Chatfield/Coghlan combo at RD3. Retaining Mayfield down to $725K keeps the Canes under the cap once Ondrej Kase comes off LTIR.
2.
NYI
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (VGK)
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
NEED: Vegas is playing Mike Amadio for 12+ minutes every night. Parise might be older, but he's got the same cap hit and can play all 3 phases of the game.
VGK
  1. Parise, Zach
Additional Details:
COMP: Calle Jarnkrok cast a similar profile at last year's deadline - middle-6 winger who can PK & get PP2 time.
Retained down to $1M, the Flames gave up a 2nd/3rd/7th for a guy who had put up a 12-14-26 line in 49 GP - Parise is at 12-7-19 in 41 GP so far.
3.
NYI
  1. Johnsson, Andreas
  2. Moynihan, Patrick [Reserve List]
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
NEED: As obvious a need as any in the league - the Devils are contenders but their current tandem is incredibly inexperienced in the playoffs (Vanecek has 3 starts: .855 SV% & 4.25 GAA in those.) Varly is a career .919 in 58 playoff starts - just what the Devils need to make some noise in the spring.
NJD
  1. Varlamov, Semyon ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
COMP: MAF trade - that 2nd becomes a 1st based on whatever arcane advancement/playing time conditions you want to place on it (I think winning 2 rounds with Varlamov starting 50.1% of the games is a good start.) Johansson comes along to make the cap work and brings along Moynihan as thanks for the favor.

i'd go with schneider as the backup and then if anyone like hellberg or whoever winds up on waivers they can grab them

Hellesson is a righty and is/was supposed to be closer to NHL ready than Forsmark. Also I don’t like the Varly deal given the fact they are retaining 50% and taking back a buried contract for a second round pick. Personally I’ve been toying with a Varly and Salo to LAK deal where the isles get back a righty d prospect, a backup goalie and Iafallo. I’m just trying to figure out what fair value would be.

Agreed. Skarek has looked the part of an NHL goaltender in the pre season, but his stat line in Bridgeport says otherwise.

Can get Reimer for less. Devs should make the playoffs but how far will they get? Varly if they were a fav, this deal is better suited for next yr. I think they will be using their picks this yer to land a winger in the Timo Meier mold.
