Description
The Devils are 7 points out of the playoffs, with a game in hand on Philly, but I don't see them making it this year. If I was in charge I would look to sell off some pieces and then go fix the teams problems in the offseason, and hope it works.

Sign Mercer to a bridge deal, save some money for the Saros extension, and the Holtz, Nemec, and Hughes deals coming up, bring in some depth skaters and maybe a backup, but I'd let Daws and Schmid compete for the backup spot

  3. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Currently the Devils have the 12th overall pick, and are only 2 points ahead of the Sabres who have the 8th pick, whatever the pick ends up being, as long as it isn't top 2 I'd move it for a goalie.

Vanecek is purely a contract going the other way, could be bought-out or used by Nashville.

For comparison, the Devils traded the 9th overall pick in 2013 for Cory Schneider, a 27 year old goalie who had 2 years left at 4 mil, I think a pick around 10th, a late 2nd, and a contract to make the cap work would be fair.

Schneider had also never been more than a backup at time of trade with 33 games in a single season and 98 total NHL games prior to trade.

Saros already started 49 games this season for reference. So you are comparing value of a promising rising goalie that hasnt assumed starting workload vs an established 60+ game starting goalie.

Nashville would pass. At the draft, more teams will have interest and capspace.

Not to mention Saros was 3rd in Vezina voting in 2022 and 4th in 2023.

Schneider in the 3 years before his trade:

1st in GAA
1st in sv%
2nd in GSAX/60
4th in overall GSAx

Cory Schneider was already a top 5 goalie in hockey at the time of his trade

12-13 season was a shortened season so he did have a "starters" load at 30 of 48 games i guess but having never carried a large majority of the games of a typical 82 game season. A season high of 33 games doesnt compare to a 67 game a year starter. Backup load vs starter.

Some backup or tandem goalies that fall apart under a heavy workload. You dont know how if he can physically or mentally handle the stress of the increased workload. Etc.

Sure for Toffoli. No need to send Foegele out though. And he’s a UFA so don’t see why Devils take him if they are selling.
