Sign Tavares at Fair Market Value, Keep Kessel

Created by: tulrich

Description
Looked at what it would take for the Pens to sign Tavares to a 7year deal with an AAV of $10.6M (predicted contract per Matt Cane) while also keeping Kessel. It's possible and not even that tricky.

How do you plan to keep Brassard and Guentzel? And you still only have enough players to play a game. Most teams carry 22 or 23 players.

I mean yeah its easy. But youre not resigning either Guentzel or ZAR. If you do, you won't be icing a competitive bottom-6. That Brassard and Sheahan money will evaporate quickly.

The Pens definitely wouldn't re-sign Brassard. They'd probably need to make sacrifices in order to retain Guentzel. Maybe even eventually trade Kessel (which is something I think the Pens should revisit every year but this year it should be a resounding 'No'). But in my opinion, if a team has an opportunity to put the star power in place, do it and then build/adjust around that because Superstars like Tavares have shown to out-produce their cap hits more than other players (with exception to those on ELCs).

To re-sign Guentzel you'd likely need to make a sacrifice. It might even be a guy like Maatta. Or maybe next year would be the year the Pens trade Kessel. Brassard, I think, only has 1 more year with the Pens regardless. Sheahan is kind of a luxury. If those two players move out you probably stretch your Centre depth out to Crosby-Malkin-Tavares. I'd say any "Bottom 6" that starts with Tavares will likely be very competitive. It'd likely be more like a "Top 9" situation where you're spreading out your even-strength ice-time evenly between 3 lines.

I'd sign Kühnhackl and Rowney as backups but that's a side note. With not signing Brassard or potentially Ruhwedel, plus a cap rise, they should be able to eek it out at the cap ceiling after signing Guentzel and ZAR next year. But that completely depends on their performances this year.

why on earth would you move Malkin to the wing?
There is no space in pittsburgh to sign JT unless you move one of him or Crosby.

Furthermore, LAK does not need Hunwick and cash strapped Edmonton isn't going to cough up $4 million a year on Hagelin.
Not to mention Sprong on the 4th line is a huge mistake. He's not a 4th line guy,. He isn't a player who likes to check.

Also that blue line...omg not Chad R. again. That will NEVER work. He's an AHL level defensman. They need to bring in a free agent.

He wouldn't have to be. But it'd be fun to run a line of Guentzel-Crosby-Malkin for a year. My god, that would be fun.

I've just shown that there is.

Fine, pick any team. I just used random teams as vehicles to get rid of those players.

Again, you can put the lines however you like but that's on old school way of thinking anyway. Every line should be able to score. You don't need "checkers" you need guys who can carry the play and dominate possession.

The 2018 Penguins Blue line is as good if not better than the 2016 or 2017 versions that won cups. And if you've basically got one of Crosby, Malkin or Tavares on the ice at all times, your D are going to have very little work to do.
