Caps pass. They can deal Grubby to a couple of teams without any reach around.

People don't understand that WSH has way more than enough cap room to sign Carlson. Don't know why people keep thinking they are up against the wall. They aren't.

Yeah so? Is that against the rules? And again that's WITH Orpik on the team. They move him that's $5.5M in space. Buy him out for $3M.

I just looked at that assuming Vrána djoo Stephenson all sign bridge deals.......this might work but caps if they go by this blue print will need to trade holtby or would easily lose great young talent to offersheets. Also Carlson doesn’t come back to dc for any less than oel

Vrana and Stephenson are RFA after next season. Carlson will likely give discount after the cup, so let's say like 7,5M. The salary cap will be around 80M or more, so it leaves caps with more than 10M after signing Carlson. Grubi is gone and Samsonov comes as backup. Beagle is gonna be cheap and Kempny too. There's no reason Caps wouldn't have the space they need. Also they dont even have to sign Beagle by any means.

This is correct, and @ClockReads2113 and I have each posted a dozen builds that keep Carlson. Click on our names. Click on "view armchair GM teams." Check them out. Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

Part of it is how you frame the question: how do you keep all of the players? You don't. No team does that. You pick some and trade others and you discuss what the value is of those guys. Grubauer is going to be traded for a mid first round pick.

Orpik for Methot isn't actually half bad, but I think half the Caps teams I see on here are just keeping Orpik after these playoffs: https://starsandsticks.com/2018/06/16/washington-capitals-brooks-orpik-deserves-hand/

Holtby for Bishop... in Bishops best years, they've been about even. Nah.

I think Kempny and Jerabek, if they want raises, get them elsewhere. Chiasson gets a thank you card from the team, a fancy ring, and an invitation to come hang out any time. That's about 4M right there for Carlson's raise.

Take off Grubauer's contract and you can give a raise to DSP and hopefully either keep Beagle at the same price or sign a different UFA who wants to join the Caps.

But again, CR2113 and I have each posted several teams that we think work, going forward. Instead of incredulity, what about participating in some conversations? We welcome your comments and trade proposals. Holtby probably isn't going anywhere, but if Grubauer goes anywhere, that changes to definitely.

He 100% isn’t going to take another discounted price. He’ll take 8-8.25 million if you forgot he already signed a team friendly deal..... he wins cup he can now get paid up to 9-9.5 from Vegas buff any team that needs a top pairing offensive minded d man. I mea. U can hope and prentwnd that’s not the case but if 7.5 is the number he’d be signed already.

Rfa doesn’t mean they can’t go to arbitration or get offer sheets. Vrana could have 25 goals or 50-60 points he’ll get around 3.5 in arbitration or another team could offer him more

Stephenson isn’t gonna be more than 1-1.5 million but that’s beagle money

Djoo will get an orlov bridge 2-2.5 million

Bura will get 4 -4.5 million

Idk why everyone keeps saying grub is gone his cap hit is nothing and the back up goalie coming up saves 500-700k barely anything to point out and that’s if he can handle 20 games which he’s never played an nhl game to my knowledge (colplay?)

Also samsonov being the backup is the dumbest thing that could possibly happen. He needs to get consistent starts

He’ll b a starter of holtby gets hurt tho

How about you guys do one where Carlson gets a realistic value or 8-8.25 million and explain how the following season you keep vrana assuming he gets top 6 points. Djoo Stephenson and bura

Carlson gets 8-8.25. If you think it’s 7.5 it would be done already no discussion. I could be wrong but remember you guys keep saying hometown discount but he already did a hometown discount look at his last deal besides Ellis you could argue he was the best value d man. Also look at chi cups don’t always get you discount toews Kane seabrook

Vrana assuming he gets 20 goals 50 points

Vrana 3-3.5 million. ( easikybgets that In arbitration)
Stephenson 1 1.5 million (beagle $$$)
Djoo 2-2.5 million (gets the orlov bridge )
Bura 3.5-4 million

So you love orpik his 5.5 m is off the book + cap goes up to 82

Let’s say caps have the 10 million bc Brett c is off the books

Low end these players cost 9-9.5 million plus you need to replace orpik and 2 forwards also if you don’t wanna lose Gerish for nothing so that’ll cost you money. Love to see how they can afford Carlson given this info

You’d have to dump holtby and hope samsonov is nhl ready

The truth is, one of the young guys has to be traded, Burkie or Vrana. And Grubi wants to be a starter and his value is quite high right now, so it would be beneficial to trade him now. Another team practicly never offers anything to an RFA, cos it's a dic move and they'll have to forfeit draft pics in the process, so it's not ideal.
And of course Carlson wants to know what he's worth, so that's probably why he'll wait out till July. 7.5M is realistic, if they offer him 8 years, what other teams can't even offer. It's also a family matter, sense his wife is from DC and he's been living there ever since he was drafted.

He can go home to his family (njd) be in the playoffs and have a great chance to win.

Caps best option is to try and speed up bowey development and sign green for 3 years. Or trade grub for a serviceable lhd maybe pulock from nyi. They already have a tj oshie contact

Green? ? Give me a break. You can't magically speed anyone up, and Bowey showed no signs of being NHL ready, he might never be. Pulock is rhd and NYI won't just give up their good prospect with a hammer of a shot for draft pics.

I meant rhd and mike green didn’t look terrible in Detroit. And bowey looked great when not paired w cement foot orpik. I’m not sure you watch the same nhl I do. Boweyhad 12 points in 51 games as a rookie playing w orpik and had 0 power play time. He was only a -3 and again he played w orpik. Unless you’re one of these idiots on here who thinks orpik is good? When bowey played w orlov he looked awesome. And ppl have grub pulling in a top 15 draft pick and a descent prospect. Just saying I would rather target him then dump 8x8 into jc when they have the tj oshie contract. And you laugh but green was 5x better than Carlson in his actual prime

No, I don't thini Orpik was good, he played well like a period or two and had his moments. Green was always a liability on defense. That's excactly the reason that caps struggled with mediocre teams in the playoffs on his time. He's nowhere near Carlson.

Here's the difference: Green was always just a power play specialist and offensive specialist in Washington. In the playoffs, Hunter randomly decided to have him shadow Crosby for a series, and Crosby scored a goal a game from the crease, with Green either watching, or standing nearby not really watching.

Orpik was always old and slow, but in 2018 he led all playoff players in plus/minus, came in 2nd in blocked shots (Niskanen) and came in 2nd in hits (Wilson). He played the last 2:22 with Niskanen to keep the one goal lead against VGK when they pulled their goalie. He's slow, sure, but they don't moe the nets yet and in the playoffs, when you're allowed to cross check a little, he stays in front of the net and knocks people down who try to score against him. He also now has as many playoff GWG as Erik Karlsson or Mike Green (2). Carlson has one (1). Obviously the main value in the regular season of 37 year old Orpik is that the coaches pair him with a guy each year to teach him positioning and then that guy, whether it's Schmidt or Carlson or whoever, goes on to lead some team in ice time and lead them to the Stanley Cup Finals. So, yes, you can keep Orpik for a year and then re-sign him more cheaply, or you can trade him now while his value is about a 3rd round pick or a 4th and a couple of prospects. I think that's about what Chicago got for sending Chelios to Detroit at 37 years old to win two more Cups with their rival in a deal that makes every list of the worst trades in Hawks history.

I asked Dallas fans to check out some Caps teams that have been posted lately, I assume you could do it, too. The answer to "how do you keep all these great young players with the potential to win the Cup?" is that you don't have to now that they've won the Cup and their trade value has gone way, way, way up. Chicago managed to win a bunch of championships with that approach, of just trading away all the good young players before they got too expensive, because winning makes a team a reasonably attractive destination to many UFAs, and if they aren't willing to take the contract that fits in with the contender, someone is. If you think Connolly is going to be worth 4M or whatever in a year, then you trade him now for a late 1st pick and sign someone else who can score goals on a checking line. Grabner and Maroon are each slightly better than him, so far, and one of them might sign for 15 over 3. I keep trading Burakovsky for Hagg and Vecchione, and the Flyers are cool with it.

Obviously the Caps aren't trading Holtby for Bishop because even if one tries to imagine that Bishop is still as good as Holtby, the goalie is the one guy who fans can cheer for, sixty minutes a night, and Washington cares about having fans. Kolzig led them to a finals where they got swept, and stuck around for well over a decade afterwards, earning what, at the time, was a huge, huge salary. Obviously anyone can be traded, but I haven't seen offers for Holtby on here that i would consider. Most of them are just like this: "wanna trade the star goalie that the whole country associates with your team winning its only championship for some other goalie who also is kind of good in some ways?" No thanks, guys. Washington does not want to do that.

Here's my favorite yard sale so far. The trades (except Edmonton and Vegas, who haven't commented, but those are pretty small) have all been hammered out in other threads on the side of the other teams involved, and people seem mostly in favor. I think the Caps can get some trade advantages and some UFA advantages out of winning a Cup. https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/731681
