Pens - The missing piece- Trade with NYI

Created by: Sidstick87
Team: 2018-19 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 27, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trading Maatta is a tough decision with how great he has been here since a 19yr old rookie and the potential he has to be a top pairing D-man for years in the NHL.
- Lee would be a great fit here on 2nd line at LW and bring some size and another net front guy in line-up.
** Letang wouldnt mind this after years of those 2 battling in front of net.
Altho he only has 1 yr left on contract, if he works out we may be able to re-sign but would be tough unless cap goes up considerably.
- Pulock is a solid Right Handed D-man that could make a solid 3rd pairing guy. He was a very high pick 5 or 6 yrs ago that never quit lived up to his potential but maybe the "Defensive Whisperer" (GONCH) could get him to reach that next level ?
- NYI also get A. Johnson who is a good prospect at C/LW that needs another yr in AHL (which is good with all of NYI contracts at forward)
- also a 2019 4th rounder for the retained $

Simon for Ryan deal
Pens need for more Left Handed D-men depth but also a guy that can start in WBS.

It's arguable Pulock is better than Maatta. So To give up Pulock AND Lee with money eaten for Maatta is a no go. And a AHLr+4th won't even that out. Maybe Maatta+1st?

MMMmmm I don't know about that.

IF Maatta is better, and again that's debatable, it's not by very much. So Lee, a top 6 winger, with money eaten isn't the right value. So, again, Maatta+1st/good prospect would make more sense.

Maata is WAY better than pulock. The deal is actually prety fair. Maybe aston-reese intead of johnson. Forget the 1st, you are lucky to get a 4th

In my opinion, problem with this trade is Lee. He's better than Määttä, and also one of the best goal scorers in the league (5th in goal scoring when combining the last two seasons with 74 goals, and only Ovechkin, Laine, Kucherov and Malkin ahead of him). Trading him and Pulock for Määttä and a random prospect + 4th is just too much of a loss for NYI, who could get easily a first and a good prospect just for Lee.

I like that Simon for Ryan trade a lot, though.

But he is not haha He put up more points than Maatta last season on a much much worse team. He's also right handed which is way more valuable. He's also younger, cheaper, and is being paid $2M for 2 more years b/f being a RFA. Maatta is on a much better team and got less points, is a lefty, and is getting paid twice as much for 4 more seasons when he hits UFA.

When the talent level is this close you always go with the rhd. Maata is very slow but imo he’s pretty good. Pulock imo is better but it’s very close

Lee is the best player in the deal and you’re asking nyi to retain salary.

Lee and pulock> Maata that other guy and a 4th by a lot. The pens fan who think this is fair aren’t realistic and are undervaluing pulock

Also asking jack Johnson to play top 4 minutes might be a terrible idea concidering he’s a major liability currently. ESP when there isn’t a solid replacement behind him if he chokes and turns out to be a bust

if the Pens want Lee they don't have to give all that up. He'll be trade bait in a loaded field come deadline. they could get him for a 1st + Simon.

Id def do that, IMO he'd be a good fit here and bring some size and the missing net front guy for top 3 lines (along with Horny and Guentzel)

I think Big Rig gets the most playing time with Schultz anyways, They paired those 2 a lot of the time during end of season. I kno ppl hate the Jack Johnson signing but IMO.... I think he will be a nice add to our D-pairings.

I like it but my only worry would be in this scenario having Johnson playing in top four. Defense is already the weaker part of the team, albeit the left side has more guys who can play it than the right but would have to decide if lee would be a big enough upgrade on LW to justify the downgrade(and yes it is a downgrade) on defense.

I mean he probably will work out my point was that if he’s uncomfortable it wouldn’t be great to trade a solid dman when you don’t have to
