Much like the return for Pacioretty, both sides seem to feel they should've gotten more - that's usually the sign of a trade that's fair, or darn close to it.
My breakdown of why the return is what it is: Ryan and Lucic are both on long term contracts that are overpayments. Ideally Ottawa is going to be icing a lot of ELC over the next 3 seasons and LUCIC is a good guy to have in the line up to keep the opposition from beating them up too badly. Finishing body checks are fine, but when they start being a thorn in the side of our young stars I want someone who can step in and tell them to knock it off or die. RYAN still puts up points and, if on a line with speed and skill, can contribute so I think Ryan is worth slightly more.
I should have mentioned that, in this fantasy trade, Karlsson is willing to extend so he is not just a one year player unless Edmonton choses him to be so. So RNH and a first seems like a fair ask. And, since Edmonton isn't the only one interested and, as noted above, Ryan contributes more than Lucic, I added mid range prospect Maksivmov. Yes Maksimov has a lot of potential but according to the 25 under 25 for Edmonton he ranks 15th, so while hopes are high, he's a 5th round draft pick who has yet to turn pro, so he's not a sure thing by any means.
