To me, being in cap hell means you have some extremely good players coming up for contract but no money to spend on them. TO has important people needing contracts but boatloads of cap space to pay for them. They will have 1 year where they have to be very lean on incoming contracts and then will have something like 8+ million in cap space after Marleau retires and the cap goes up. The only problem with TO's cap is next season and its manageable. The only people who see the Leafs being in cap hell are guys who think depth guys should get paid way too much. Stay away from terrible contracts and you can afford to pay stars star money.
okay, first off, who said cap hell? you did. I did not. I said cap issues. They have cap issues moving forward, that is undeniable. As it stands 30 million to re-sign or replace Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Leivo, Kapanen, plus a couple other forwards, Hainsey, Gardiner, Igor, and probably a couple other d men. Let's say the cap goes up to 82, giving them 32.5 to fill out the roster.
If they're lucky as can be, they'll escape with Marner and Matthews for a combined 21 million, but it could easily be 23 if they continue anywhere close to the pace their on now. Let's say it's absolute best case scenario though and it's 21. 12.5 million to sign Nylander, Kapanen (who you constantly rave about, so he probably isn't getting less than 4.5), fill out the depth, add, or keep at least one top four d man, but probably two....something has to give. How do you think they can possibly escape without losing a major player from their roster?
