I still don't get why the Leafs gave Carrick away. Oh well.

    You're overrating Nylander, again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OStf3wqrpM

I wouldn't want to trade Bowey for Nylander, straight up, especially with a likely 5M difference in cap hits each of the next two years. Yes, Burakovsky and Bowey are having a slow start this season. So is Nylander, if you hadn't heard. Bowey's going to be a #1 defenseman. The Leafs need someone established. Niskanen and Burakovsky should get it done. If they want Carlson for Nylander, the Leafs have to add Liljegren and a 1st. If they want Bowey, they should add Liljegren and Sandin.

If this were a sweepstakes for Pastrnak or Zucker, your offer would make sense to me. Those guys get 30 goals with aging, questionable linemates. It's Nylander. He gets 20 goals with superstars. If you want the heartwarming, lifelong-friends story on Backstrom's wing, talk to Buffalo. Offer Connolly and a 3rd for Alex Circles. When Bill gets back from four years of waiting Toronto out in Sweden, maybe he'll want to come back home to play with his brother.

30 teams would probably put in waiver claims, though. Back to back 60 point seasons in juniors. On a whim I tried to see how many current NHL top defensemen could say that. I didn't find one, but maybe you can help me? Let me know. When Niskanen retires and Carlson gets a bit older, Bowey is going to be the #1 defenseman on the Caps, and you can't have him for just Nylander. Sorry.

If a team wants Nylander this is the price. I want Nylander with Matthews for the next ten years. To qoute the Stones. "You can't always get what you want".

I think this is a pretty solid return. I would take it if there were no way to sign and nothing else better.

Then I hope the Caps don't want Wm. Nylander, but I wholeheartedly endorse Connolly and a 4th for Alex.

I don't think its an overpayment .......nylander would out produce vrana and bura this season......it gives back 1 more reason to sign in wash for the next 5 years... and bowey could be a #1 d but based off what? hes 23?

Yep. The Caps just won and have no pressure, so either of their two right handed #1 defensemen could move for the right return. Leafs have to add big time for Carlson, though. Like Bill Nye, Lilly Green, and a 1st.

I don't think the Caps desperately need to make changes to a team that just won the Cup and only lost Beagle and Chiasson. With Orpik out, they could use a penalty killing LHD, but the ones the Leafs have are overpaid. Better to get Jamie Benn than William Nylander, if the Caps are serious about repeating.

Otherwise, I think they take a long view, especially ahead of a potential lockout. Niskanen and some depth wings should give the Leafs enough to hoist this year. If that's not worth a wing they've already replaced, I guess they don't want to hoist. What is it the Stones say, again?

Bowey is the best player in this trade, as soon as he gets the power play ice time he was drafted for. You draft a kid with back to back sixty point seasons in juniors, promote him early from the AHL, and give him 2:09 power play ice time, career, for an average of 0:02 per game?

I think I was on here about twenty times last summer saying to leave Bowey in the AHL and develop him, and everybody said Trotz knew best. But no one has time to read back and count.

Bowey has a higher ceiling than Nylander, and if you put him on a team like the Leafs, whose best right handed offensive defenseman can't crack the NHL's top fifty right shot defensemen in even strenght points, he's going to start to get the power play opportunities that he needs, and he's going to be very, very successful.

Switch the picks and prospects, and imagine that the Caps care more about an extra 1% chance at a repeat championship than they care about staying steadily in the playoffs for the next ten years, and then maybe you can add Bowey into this conversation.

Carlson would be a bad move on the big long contract especially at the price. I believe nylander liljegren and a pick would be the price.

Fact it is Carrick was a bare NHLer. He certainly isn't better than Zaitsev, Hainsey or even the NHL inexperienced Ozhignokov as a right sized dman.. OK skater, and puck mover, but his lack of size, strength and leverage as a Dman made him your 7th or 8th Dman in the NHLer. More star qualities as a AHL player than an NHLer.

There is only one person on the planet that wouldn't do that trade from the Caps perspective, and only one person on the planet that would from the Leafs perspective. (same person)
