Defensive depth is still good with Ruhwedel and Maatta beyond the starting defensive lines. Forward depth options are now Granlund, Motte, Lazar, and Grant. Goalie depth is the same.

Why would Vancouver do this deal?

Insane PIT fans think Johnson is better than Maatta. After Letang, Maatta is your best defensemen, easily, with Dumo a close 3rd.

But johnson and petterson form a really good pair and johnson can play the right side while maattas a lefty. Johnson is not the one Maatta is competing with for a spot

They trade two expiring contracts for a young defenseman who will play a solid game behind hughes and juolevi with edler expiring. Most importantly they trade up in the draft that theyre hosting. Theyre basically just trading expiring deals which they can easily replace with all their good prospects and they get a better draft pick.

Can maatta play the right side though? Does he already have established chemistry with petterson? No.

They are both RFAs so yes the contracts are expiring, but not their rights to Vancouver. I think your premise for the deal is mistaken, so pass from Vancouver.

Vancouver doesnt need them though. With all the cap and prospects they have. Just an average GM would be able to bring in some good players for the Canucks through free agency or through the system.it squeezes those two out of the line up who are already scratched sometimes as it is.

JJ is actually started to play fairly well. I think it took combining him with the right defensive partner.

I dont know depth is good and i doubt hes going anywhere when he was just given a large contract and pettersson making him look good.

Not sure your rationale makes sense. They both play every game and aren't scratched. If we could/should replace them, why would we do this deal? We can get a better deal.

What are you talking about? This makes no sense. I'm sure Letang has been scratched before. Does that mean Pittsburgh should give him away?

Yea but Granlund is just a depth forward while Letang is elite so theyre scratches are different. Granlund would be scratched for another depth forward which Green has done before because his offensive game isnt always there. If Letang is ever scratched it's because he's not quite 100% healthy from an injury or illness.
